This was the case for Cindy W. who began playing the piano at the age of ten and within a couple of years studied composers such as Debussy, Liszt, Bach, and Chopin. While only in junior high, she started teaching piano, rapidly gaining teaching and business experience. She held annual recitals giving the students an opportunity to perform for their parents and peers in a public setting.

My name is Chris. I am currently a Jazz Studies major at San Jose State University. I began my musical journey at Dartmouth Middle School. I played saxophone, and was only mildly interested in music. I stayed in music in high school, but remained only mildly interested until my Sophomore year. I discovered the trumpet and began to listen to Louis Armstrong, and became obsessed with jazz and mastering the trumpet. In just 2 short years, I had studied enough trumpet to travel South America with the San Jose Youth Symphony Philharmonic Orchestra. This was an amazing experience that showed me how important music is (especially to people who don't have iPods and computers). After my South American tour, I decided to teach privately and share my talents with the world. I won a scholarship to San Jose State for music excellence in 2009, and joined the Spartan Marching Band. While in this prestigious organization I performed in Olympic Stadiums, Disneyland, and all over San Jose....

I started music in third grade when I started studying violin. I played in many school orchestras as well as with groups. After high school, I started studying electric bass and singing. I studied bass with Myron Dove who later played with Carlos Santana. I studied singing with Robert Bernard who was an opera coach in Palo Alto, California and was coaching Joan Baez at that time.
During the 80's I played bass and sang with my original band "The Tearmagnets". With The Tearmagnets, I warmed up stages for the likes of Robin Ford, Ric Emmett of Triumph, Clarence Clemmons (Sax plyer for Bruce Springsteen), Bourgeois-Tagg, Ronnie Montrose, Rory Gallagher, Tony McAlpine (Currenty with Steve Vai) and many other famous international acts. In the 80's my original song "Insanity" won 8th place in the Haight Ashbury Free Press song of the week beating our Jerry Garcia that same week.

My mother tells me I was reading music before I was reading words. One of my earliest memories is singing with my church children's choir; I must have been about four. I began piano lessons when I was six and in fourth grade took up the clarinet. In sixth grade I really wanted to sit next to my best friend in band class, who happened to play the oboe. So I made the switch and it stuck!

Most parents want their kids to grow up to be doctors. Mine saw my passion for music and so encouraged me to go to music school. I rebelled, naturally, thinking I would get my degree in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology (with a double-major in Music to appease my folks). After it became painfully clear to me that music was really my strong point, I decided to pursue it as a career. I received my Bachelor's degree in oboe performance at the University of California, Santa Cruz and continued on to receive a Master's in choral and orchestral conducting.

When I was in 3rd grade I learned music at school with a clarinet and fell in love with music. Once I reached Jr. High I learned Tenor Saxophone until I reached college. Once I reached college I learned to play trumpet and mellophone for marching band. Through out those years I was also playing piano. I am currently the main musician at my church and I play both the piano and trumpet/mellophone weekly. While I didn't get a Bachelors degree in music I was able to get a minor in music with plenty of exposure to theory. I work well with children and I have have a lot of patience.
