About Me

I am a 28 year old Massachusetts native and have been playing music since I was 8 years old, starting on the piano with a wonderful teacher in Beverly who also went to Berklee. I picked up the guitar and the bass in high school and got into rock, jazz and blues and haven't looked back. I graduated from Berklee in 2012 with a major in Professional Music and minored in Music Education.

I currently perform in and around Boston with several bands and also do custom guitar finishes, set-ups and modifications.

Music study is great exercise for your brain. It works both the left and right hemispheres of the brain simultaneously because you are thinking both creatively and logically/mathematically at the same time.

I am happy teaching students at any level, even if you have never picked up an instrument before. I can work with you and get you on the path to being the kind of musician you want to be.

*** Lesson Details ***
I custom tailor my lessons to meet a students individual needs. I am a serious teacher, but I am a laid back person. I am easy going, but I will make sure you learn what you need to learn. I can guarantee after 4 or 5 lessons with me, you will have tripled your knowledge of chords, scales, technique, and song repertoire. I am very patient and am happy to work with students of all ages and skill levels.

I encourage mid to upper level students to bring in CD's or email an mp3 of songs they want to learn (if they are at the right level) and I will transcribe them on the spot and go through them with you step by step.

If you want to learn how to play all your favorite songs, I am the teacher for you. I won't make you play music you aren't really interested in, but I will make recommendations for songs to improve your playing and include music theory so that you understand what you are playing and why you are playing it. The point of playing music is to HAVE FUN, after all.

I enjoy working with students ages 5-adult. I use a mix of method books, video, and audio examples in my teaching. I have a curriculum that I stick to, but I like to see what the student is interested in learning about as well and working that into our lessons. For drum students, I start every student on a practice pad first before moving on to drum set and each student must learn orchestral and rudimentary snare drum techniques even if they are just interested in drum set. Learning to read music and music theory are also covered during lessons and are required learning.

A first lesson for a beginning drummer will cover how to hold the sticks properly and an introduction to reading music. We will also watch video clips of famous drummers and we will discuss who your favorite musicians/bands are so that we can cover those interests during future lessons.

I've been playing the guitar for twenty-six years now, and I've been working as a guitar teacher for the last twenty years. I've been making a living as a guitar teacher in the Boston area for fourteen years now, and I teach in two locations - Brighton and Dedham. Prior to that I also taught at Guitar Attention Center in Springfield, Ohio while I was in college, where I graduated with honors at Wright State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Mass Communications.
I've also played in a variety of original and cover bands, and have written a number of songs of my own. I'm working on recording these as instrumentals in my home studio.
I also play in a rock cover band called Element 78. We play out every weekend, and even on some Sundays. The singer and I have also started doing some acoustic shows on Sundays and Thursdays as well.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach in two locations - I have a private studio in Brighton and I also teach out of my home in Dedham.

I'm happy to teach students songs they want to learn, but if you're looking for a teacher with a specific plan to teach you how to play the guitar, I do have that. There are specific exercises I'll teach you and songs by popular artists that I teach students to develop their skills. I have a method for teaching guitar that I've been using since 1997, and it definitely works as I've taught a lot of people to play over the years. All you have to do is practice what I give you for 30 minutes a day, 4-5 days a week, and be patient with yourself.

Albino M. Cambridge, MA

Subjects Taught

Bass Guitar, Classical Guitar, Flamenco Guitar, Guitar, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Singing, Songwriting, Ukulele

About Me

Albino was born in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, a country in southern Africa known for its rich musical and cultural heritage. Fueled by the resourcefulness and determination that have always characterized Mozambicans, he built his first guitar at 16 from a 5-liter can of oil, scrap wood, and strings made out of electrical cords.

Drawn to the sounds of neighborhood street musicians in Maputo, Albino began to play in a number of local bands. As with his home-made guitar, Albino wanted to combine styles and incorporate diverse elements in his music. For his talents to grow, he knew he needed experience new places, cultures, and sounds.

While studying music education and Performance at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique, he heard about the Berklee School of Music in Boston, USA, where he could expand his musical horizons. Soon after, he was one of the first students to receive a full scholarship to Berklee through the African Scholars program. In 2009, he settled in Boston, Massachusetts.

At Berklee, he was exposed to a variety of influences, but wanted to go deeper into the roots of jazz and expand his knowledge of music. He auditioned and was selected to participate in the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, which is directed by Danilo Perez and the residency teachers, including Joe Lovano John Patitucci, and Terri Lyne Carrington. The Institute emphasizes an artist's original vision in jazz, and has helped Albino find his own unique voice in the art form.

Albino still felt the absence of his own Mozambican traditions in his music. With the help of his mentors, Richard Bona and Lionel Loueke, two of the most prominent African musicians in the United States of America today, he began to bridge that gap.

Today, Albino's music succeeds in combining many disparate parts into an organic whole. It incorporates his musical experiences from Mozambique, the U.S., and many other places around the world, combining rhythmic patterns and musical concepts to create a unique Moz-Jazz sound. He will always continue to combine and capture the energies of different musical traditions to create a unified and original musical style.

Albino's original composition “Mozambique Dance” was recorded by Jazz Revelation Records, a student-run record label at the Berklee College of Music, for the 8th annual album released in 2011. He also recorded “Awusiwana,” his own composition, for the Berklee 2012 summer album. His debut album, also called Mozambique Dance, is to be released in Spring 2013.

Albino is an active musician, and has performed in several countries including Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Italy, the U.S., and Mexico. He has also produced and recorded various projects in Mozambique and in the United States. In 2012, he will graduate from Berklee College with a degree in Music Production & Engineering and Performance, and a minor in Acoustics and Electronics.
