About Me

I am a mezzo soprano with a bachelor and masters of music degree in vocal performance from the University of Houston. I am pursuing a career in opera while teaching private voice and piano lessons,
During my voice lessons I like to focus on developing the student's voice through a classical approach. By forming a strong foundation in healthy singing the student will be able to sing in various genres without strain to his/her voice.
In my piano lessons I use the series of method books, Piano Adventures, developed by Nancy and Randall Faber. Through these instructions the student will learn to read music as well as establish a proficiency for playing the piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
If you take lessons from me we will have fun while working hard. I develop my lessons around what I feel the student needs on that particular day.
In a voice lesson we might spend the entire time on technique exercises to strengthen the voice. We might also work on several songs with an emphasis on interpretation.
In regards my piano lessons, I generally stick to the curriculum, but will take the time to focus on the individual needs of the student.
I expect my students to practice at least 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week. Everyone learns at a different rate, but if the student practices regularly, he/she will see progress within a few months.

I have an upright piano in my studio as well as several music books. I expect my students to bring their music as well as their assignment book to every lesson.

I specialize in a classical technique when it comes to teaching voice. I focus on proper breath support and a relaxed open larynx to produce a free, beautiful sound. I believe a classical foundation can be applied to any musical genre, with the result that you are singing in a healthy manner that will not damage your vocal chords, thus allowing for a longer singing career.

I have been teaching voice for 5 years and my beginner students are already singing their own gigs. I have had only one advanced student in singing and in 2010 he got the zarzuela prize in the most prestigious opera competition in the world "Placido Domingo´s Operalia). I can teach in Spanish, English and Italian. and for voice I specialize in opera and mariachi music. In guitar I only do beginners.

For voice I only take students from 17 years old and on. This is only because the childrens voice is very delicate and I think it requires a teacher who specializes in children for it is a big responsibility. Once the puberty voice change is gone: this is my field of expertise. with great discipline and a huge desire of success, a student could be singing in less than 6 months in a proper, healthy and beautiful way.

For guitar, since it is for beginners, is very simple and fast, and as well as singing, if you do your homework, then the achievements will come faster than you think!!!

I need from students to provide a piano or a keyboard for voice, I would provide the music to be copied, or they can buy their own music. For guitar they have to have a classical guitar and I would bring mine so that we both can use a guitar.

About Me

I have sung for as long as I could speak! I hail from a family of recording artists and have graced the stage since the age of 4. During high school, I learned to read music and took piano lessons. This peaked my interest in wanting to learn the fundamentals of music so I decided to major in it in college.

I then went on to Xavier University, where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Music. While at Xavier I participated in many productions. I also received a Xavier University Music Scholarship for four years. Baritone, Bryan holds a bachelor of music in classical voice from the Manhattan School of Music and a Master of Arts degree from New York University with a concentration in vocal jazz and studio music.

At 15 he was given his first Frank Sinatra record, which he would listen to for hours, studying the nuances and phrasing. In the fall of 1995, Bryan entered the Manhattan School of Music in NYC, where he majored in classical voice. During his freshman year, Bryan performed several times on New York’s restaurant row, including Don’t Tell Mamas and Danny’s Skylight Room, where he thrilled audiences with his own style and voice accompanied by his newly formed jazz trio.

In the summer of 1997, Bryan accepted an offer from the Glenn Miller Orchestra to begin touring. The tour took him all over the US, Canada, the Hawaiian Islands and Japan. He returned to the Manhattan School of Music to finish his undergraduate degree in 2000, but he remained in New York City to complete his Master’s degree from New York University in jazz and contemporary music. Then, in 2002, Bryan joined the off-Broadway cast of “Our Sinatra,” a production about the musical legacy of the late Frank Sinatra—the show ran an unprecedented two and a half years.

In addition to touring the world with his jazz trio, Bryan has had the pleasure of working with The Glenn Miller Orchestra, The New Gene Krupa Orchestra, The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and The Nelson Riddle Orchestra.

Bryan's second record "Songs For Dreamer's", which includes many songs of the “Great American Songbook,” is available for download on itunes and rhapsody. His new record, “A Night Like This,” recorded with the Gary Norian trio, includes several original songs as well as re-imagined standards and was released in July of 2011 by Mercator Media. This record is also available for download on itunes.

In the studio, the focus is on arming his students with the tools and skills necessary to enjoy their musical journeys more fully. This task is undertaken by strengthening and building a healthy technique while concurrently cultivating a strong sense of artistry, creativity and respect for the process of preparing and performing vocal music.

*** Lesson Details ***
Bryan will tailor his lessons to the goals of his individual students. He will focus on the technical aspects of building a healthy and sustainable way of singing that will be able to be used for any genre of music. Bryan specializes in jazz and the songs of "The Great American Songbook" which encompass the likes of the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Sammy Cahn, Jule Styne, Steven Sondheim, etc. "I will help the students find repertoire that will fit their own personality so they will be able to really get inside of the songs they sing. I will teach the art of performance practice for each song that we choose to work on. " My approach to building a students repertoire is quality not quantity.

Bryan feels it is important to get out of the lessons what each individual student wants. So, he doesn’t have a set curriculum. Instead, he tailors each lesson to the individual student. Bryan is a very patient teacher and presents material in an easily digestible manner, so that you will progress at your own pace. Bryan loves working with beginners and getting them off to a good start, as much as he enjoys taking advanced students to the next level.

Among the aspects that set Bryan apart from other teachers is his extensive knowledge about the history of music, especially the songs of the "Great American Songbook, technical aspects of singing and music theory. He is able to relate whatever you are doing to the core fundamentals of healthy singing and music in general. He feels it is essential to understand what you are singing and why you are singing it.

About Me

Composer Troy W. graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters (cum laude) and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. After spending a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. W. moved to Houston in 2001 where he continued graduate studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.

During his time as a teacher with the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Troy taught classes in music fundamentals and music theory for pre-college students. He has also served on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Piano teaching courses in Form & Analysis for pre-college students.

Troy also has maintained a private studio, tutoring and teaching private lessons in composition, ear training, voice, piano, literature, and history for over ten years. Students who have studied with him come from a wide range of backgrounds with different goals. Those who have continued with musical studies in college have consistently placed out of at least the first two semesters of music theory and achieved advanced placement in their chosen fields of study. Those who chose a different path continue to benefit from the education and training they received from taking music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
There is no "standard formula" to lessons. Each student has their own unique background, needs, and goals. Lessons tend to be somewhat casual but are structured in such a way as to meet the unique requirements of the student.

To accomplish your goals, there are a few requirements and basic expectations that the student and parent must meet.
The first is practice. Students are expected to practice daily for at least the length of their lesson time. This, above all else, is essential to progress. It is also expected that a parent will attend lessons for students who are too young to drive themselves here. It's important for a parent to guide the student's practice time (particularly for younger students) to ensure that the most is gained from it. This is why I ask that a parent observe lessons.
Each student or parent should bring to each lesson a notebook, pencils (with erasers). The notebook will be used to record notes about each lesson, homework, practice advice, etc. Pencils (not pens...nobody's perfect!) are used by composers to record their creations and performers to mark their music. Both of these essential practices are subject to changing thought and must be open to change. So no ink, please!

Performers: It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Lessons are not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected based on the student's learning needs but also with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
Note: Voice students must be at least 16 years of age.

Composers: Just as with performers, it is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either written, notated, or recorded in a digital format. They should be prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

IMPORTANT NOTE: the studio space is also inhabited by two lovely cats. Do consider this when signing up for lessons.
