I have been teaching French Horn and piano privately for about five years, mainly in Lynnwood, WA. I have also coached horn players in local school bands during this time. There are many difficulties that students encounter when studying music, and I want to help you turn weaknesses into strengths, and help you find out where your greatest strengths (and interests) lie in music. I'll work with you to help you understand your own musical desires and goals, so that you can get the most out of your lessons. Julia began playing the trumpet at age 11 in her middle school band. She found her real passion was singing, so she began training with a voice coach, playing piano, and performing in musical theatre productions.

In 2004 Julia entered the School of Music and Theatre Arts at Washington State University. She studied voice and piano and was an avid performer in the WSU Library Atrium Recital Series. She was cast in 6 productions of the school's Opera Workshop Series including "Jane Eyre," "Naughty Marietta" and "Der Freitschutz." She also played her trumpet in the Cougar Marching Band for 2 seasons. Julia taught private voice and piano lessons from her studio during college until she graduated in May, 2010.

I am currently completing my Master of Music degree in Brass Performance (Trumpet) at the University of Washington. My primary teachers are David Gordon (principal trumpet of the Seattle Symphony), Allen Vizzutti (internationally acclaimed trumpet star), and Dr. Kathryn Aducci (Baroque trumpet specialist). I am pursuing trumpet performance at this level so I can be a role model for my students (whether they play piano, trumpet, or want to study music theory/performance). I was classically trained from ages 6-16, while teaching myself guitar, drums, songwriting, and vocals on the side. Learning about the "why" and "how" behind the piano (i.e. Music Theory) while I was in college brought about the musical freedom I am so passionate about showing students. In addition, learning drums by imitation and by ear really rounded out my piano training, which is why I use more than just a single "method" or only teaching the student how to read music well.

For me, having parents of different ethnicities and siblings that were much older than me, I was heavily impacted by the wide variety of music to which my family members listened. During my time at Berklee I received two scholarships, The Korg Endowed for Early Childhood Education and the Scott Benson Scholarship, the highest award given for Songwriting.
