Bethany A. Bedford, MA

About Bethany

I started studying classical piano at the age of 6 and continued through high school before going on to study with Robert Shannon at Oberlin Conservatory, where I majored in music history and theory (as well as English and creative writing - I've always had a lot of interests!). I also sang in choirs from a early age, including my high school's Madrigal Singers, the MMEA Northeast District Chorus, and the Oberlin College Choir, a select group which performs regularly with the Cleveland Orchestra. After graduation, I tried out a variety of musical activities, including singing with a semi-professional a Capella group, None of the Above, and appearing in local community theatre productions. But I finally realized that I'm most comfortable behind a piano, whether playing and conducting for ...

Voice lessons with Bethany were very good for me. She tailored our warm up exercises for my particular needs. She has good advice for breathing and vowel sounds for each piece and general advice for technique to make a piece sound better and be easier to sing. She also plays piano well for accompaniment. I hope to take lessons again with her soon.

Vocal and Piano

Bethany Aiken is doing a wonderful job teaching my 9 year old daughter Amelia Miller piano and vocal lessons. Amelia really enjoys her sessions and is learning so much. Bethany is a very calm and patient instructor which puts my daughter at ease and she feels so comfortable.

Hi! I am excited to work with students of all ages and levels, and I am here to help you unlock the treasury of our music together. I'm devoted to passing on the joy of music-making to performers of any age, whether you are passionate about musical theater, classical music, popular music, or just for the fun of making music. As a soloist, I am a frequent performer throughout the Northeast. This season's performances include engagements with Lowell House Opera, Opera Brittenica, Cantata Singers, Opera Providence, and concerts and TV appearances with the award-winning folk music group Voice of the Turtle, as well as numerous recitals. Encouraging and Patient!

Ian is the most encouraging teacher I've hardly met. He is always ready to point out the improvements and in a sincere way. Even though I tend to repeat the mistake, he takes it as a natural learning process and gives time for myself to overcome it.

Besides, it usually takes me more effort to understand the terms/background of the pieces we work on since English is not my native language but Ian is able to translate into something I could understand.

Singing is one of the most challenging and rewarding areas of musical performance. It's so personal and expressive that a lot of us feel uncomfortable approaching the voice at all. I've been singing and performing for over a decade. Using proper breathing technique and customized warm-ups I can help you become the best possible singer you can be! The first step is always the hardest but I am confident that we can do it!

About Joshua

I eat/breathe/sleep music. From writing and conducting my first A Capella piece in high school to playing in bands that have toured around the world (The Fates, Ben Levin Group), I am a music machine! I value nothing more than finding that passion in others and working together to turn musical fantasies into realities. From grade school to high school I took rigorous classical piano lessons. In 2006-07 I attended two summer programs at Berklee College of Music where I studied jazz/rock performance, and continued to study jazz piano at Washington University. At Boston University, I studied classical music composition/theory, and was accepted to for a dual degree in Music Composition, Psychology, but decided to pursue music as a minor in order to allow more time for gigging. Since ...

Three Reasons to take lessons from Josh:
1. He's a musical genius. Seriously, the man knows his stuff.
2. Hes a fabulous teacher. Whatever your learning style, learning preference, difficulties, etc. he has an approach that will help make you into a better musician and performer. He wants to teach you WHATEVER it is you want to learn about music and performance, not just the basics-he wants to find out how music engages you personally, which is a rare and really cool thing.
3. He works at your pace. you can work on improving your skills as slow (or as fast) as you want.

Basically, Josh is a wonderful teacher with a wealth of technical skill and talent in addition to a great deal of compassion and patience making him everything a person could really ask for in a teacher. I recommend him whole heartedly!

Josh is one of the most patient vocal coaches I've worked with. He really takes the time to get to know your voice and the style of music you're aiming to sing. Highly recommend giving him a try. It's worth it.

Daniel R. Somerville, MA

About Daniel

I love to sing, and I love to teach. Private lessons are a great place for both. Whether you're already passionate about music, or just dipping your feet in the water, I can personalize lessons to meet your needs. For me, seeing a student grow as a musician is a reward in itself. But the biggest rewards should be yours: a stronger voice, a deeper understanding of music, a whole body involved in making music, an enjoyable effort, and a growing independence to handle musical and technical difficulties over time. My background: I am an experienced tenor vocalist, with over 11 years of private vocal study, a BA in music from Williams College, and further study in vocal pedagogy (how to teach voice) with a Longy professor. I sing currently with the Cantata Singers, Labyrinth Choir, ...

Voice Lessons

Daniel R is absolutely a terrific instructor. He provides clear, concise instructions. His use of voice exercises are extremely helpful and if not correctly done, he changes them for comfort. He does reuse the exercises the next visit so you, the student, are eventually able to grasp them comfortably. His skillful playing is terrific also, when improvising music. He is highly knowledgeable and very helpful.
Amelia J. Brighton, MA

About Amelia

I have been interested in music for as long as I can remember. I began taking piano lessons when I was six and started auditioning for musicals at eight. I fell in love with performing, and my passion has grown into a career path. I began studying voice privately when I was in thirteen. Music and performing have brought so much joy to my life, and I love to help others develop and cultivate their own passion for music. I recently received my Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory. I also hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Performance from DePaul University. During undergrad, I was able to study abroad for a semester in Vienna, Austria where I performed in an opera workshop. I have spent two summers on Cape Cod singing with the College Light Opera ...

Albino M. Cambridge, MA

I have been singing for years and teaching voice!!

About Albino

Albino was born in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, a country in southern Africa known for its rich musical and cultural heritage. Fueled by the resourcefulness and determination that have always characterized Mozambicans, he built his first guitar at 16 from a 5-liter can of oil, scrap wood, and strings made out of electrical cords. Drawn to the sounds of neighborhood street musicians in Maputo, Albino began to play in a number of local bands. As with his home-made guitar, Albino wanted to combine styles and incorporate diverse elements in his music. For his talents to grow, he knew he needed experience new places, cultures, and sounds.
