Piano, History, Music Performance, Music Theory, Reading, Saxophone
I began my love for music at the age of 12 when I joined middle school band to play the saxophone. From then it was “love at first sight,” and I became completely immersed in the fascination of music. By age 18, I had participated in many Honor Bands across the country and furthered my studies in music earning both a Bachelor’s and Masters Degree from Morgan State University. I have performed in Classical, Jazz, and Modern Contemporary atmospheres in both Saxophone and Piano, as well as; teach elementary music in the Baltimore City Public School System and the Boston Public School System. I have a very diverse background, and furthermore; I truly enjoy teaching music to students of all ages and abilities.
Guitar, Piano, Music Theory
I grew up in a musical home and have been playing piano since the age of four. I have had all sorts of different music teachers in my life and I have always looked to them for inspiration for my own teaching--what would I do differently? What would I do the same?
In my opinion, a teacher is an extremely energetic, charged individual who is entirely focused on the progress of the student. A teacher is inspiring, motivating, and makes learning a fun and enjoyable experience. I strive for this level of excellence in each of my lessons. It is extremely important to me that my students learn at their own pace, while mastering techniques and building a strong foundation.
I teach both piano and guitar, and I am excited to start you off on your musical journey!
I was classically trained on the piano from the age of four. When I was twelve, I decided to expand my musical horizons and pick up the guitar. During high school, I became very serious about my musical studies. I attended 6-week summer workshops at the National Guitar Workshop for guitar and music theory lessons. I also began attending a magnet school program called the Regional Center for the Arts, which I did every day after my normal school day. In 2007, I began my studies at Berklee College of Music and graduated in 2011 as a Bachelor of Music with a degree in Film Scoring.
I have about five years of teaching experience. While I was still in high school, I was giving private piano and guitar lessons on the weekends. I also helped tutor my fellow students at the Regional Center for the Arts. This is when I discovered I loved teaching. During my time at Berklee, I participated in a work/study program at the Boys and Girls Club of Dorchester. I taught private piano and guitar lessons here, as well as group piano lessons. I also participated in a program called KidsJam, which gave me experience working with very little children (ages 3-5).
It is extremely important that we focus on what YOU want to learn! I can teach many different styles, from classical to classic rock!
Acting, Piano, Singing, Music Performance, Songwriting
I have taught piano and voice most of my adult life. Early on I learned the need to adapt my teaching style to the uniqueness of each student, especially those whose perceptions differ widely from the general populace. I love what I do, helping each student discover and nurture their abilities, no matter what age the student may be.
The Holistic Piano method is especially effective with my Autism-spectrum students, a segment of the population I find particularly rewarding to teach.
The following is a quote from ex-student Karena Krull, author of "Drama Made Easy", and "Rummy Roots."
“Her greatest strength is her ability to find the right direction for each individual. This ability to adapt to the student's needs lends to individual success for student and avoids their frustration. If her current method or communication isn't creating success for a student she will quickly change to another till she finds the right words or method to enable the student to succeed with the least amount of frustration.”
Acting, Piano, Singing, Broadway Singing, Music Theory, Opera Voice
I have been interested in music for as long as I can remember. I began taking piano lessons when I was six and started auditioning for musicals at eight. I fell in love with performing, and my passion has grown into a career path. I began studying voice privately when I was in thirteen. Music and performing have brought so much joy to my life, and I love to help others develop and cultivate their own passion for music.
I recently received my Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory. I also hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Performance from DePaul University. During undergrad, I was able to study abroad for a semester in Vienna, Austria where I performed in an opera workshop. I have spent two summers on Cape Cod singing with the College Light Opera Company. I have experience singing both opera and musical theater roles as well as an extensive choral background. I have sung with NEC Opera, Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, North End Music and Performing Arts Center, MIT G&S Players, and Madison Opera. Favorite roles include Papagena (The Magic Flute), Casilda (The Gondoliers), Johanna Barker (Sweeney Todd), Anne Egerman (A Little Night Music), and Rapunzel (Into the Woods). In addition to my private studio, I am a teaching artist/ vocal mentor with Missing Links in Roxbury, MA. While I specialize in classical and musical theater singing, I also have a love of jazz and folk music. I believe that learning the basics of classical vocal technique are essential to healthy singing of any kind.
"Steven is very professional and extremely helpful. He always has a smile on and is serious about helping you phrase the music. I would highly recommend him to anyone."
"It's been really exciting so far! Jordan has been so helpful, so knowledgeable. I could not have found a better instructor and I'm getting better and better every day."
"My daughter's wedding was weeks away and I had never been able to dance a step. With Jenny's help, I came further than ever before in such short time in any subject."
