About Me

I've appeared on records with dozens of NYC area rock and pop bands, and perform as a classical and jazz trombonist in all five boroughs and New Jersey.

I listen to and play all kinds of music from Beethoven to Stravinsky, Arcade Fire to Beyonce, James Brown to Snoop Dogg/Lion. I have had the pleasure to share the stage with rockers Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots), and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), and jazz greats Maynard Ferguson, Jimmie Lunceford, Conrad Herwig, "Blue" Lou Marini, and Jeff Coffin (Flecktones).

I've played acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, violin, cello, and string bass in virtually all different styles. Some of my favorite recent projects have been:
-Quilty (Pavement-style hard rock band)
-The Nevermind Orchestra (brass band that covers Nirvana tunes; I play trombone)
-Chill Sons (my own band for which I write songs, play guitar, and sing)
-Manhattan Symphonie (an entertaining symphony orchestra featuring soloists on piano, violin, saw, urdu, and tap shoes)

It is a treat to share music with others, and my lessons are fun, challenging, and engaging.

About Me

As a younger brother at the age of five, I began studying the piano because my older sister did. After my foundation in music strengthened I fell in love with the trumpet. At first, each note took time to develop and I enjoyed the challenge. The trumpet allowed me to travel all over the Southeast later in life and even to China with a 1940's Radio Show. I enjoyed many top-level bands the kindled my love and passion for good music. I want to share that kindling with my students in a nurturing and guiding situation, just like my teachers gave me.
I used to go to lessons and become so motivated and inspired that I thought I could change the world. I always knew that I would want to give back exactly that. As my performance opportunities grew into venues like Churchill Grounds, The Eyedrum, The Rialto, and The Variety Playhouse in Atlanta and Radio City Music Hall and Flushing Town Hall in New York, my fire for wanting to develop my teaching did also. I was always thinking back to what my old teachers gave me, inspiration. I then understood that inspiration is the key to success in life.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons will be something the student looks forward to every week. We will work through common method books and learn material that the student has an interest in. For example, some students want to learn to play high notes, a popular song, improvise, or write their own songs. I am a laid back guy, but I do expect effort in the lessons and at home. I believe whatever you put into music is what you get out of it, and I will inspire and motivate the student to get as much out of the lessons as they can. Students will create, with my advisement, and update short term and long term goals every few months.

About Me

Thank you for visiting my page! Here is some background about me: I began playing piano at age five and soon after began learning the trombone. I have always had a passion for music and graduated from Ithaca College with two degrees; one in Music Education and one in Tenor Trombone Performance. I have been teaching privately for nine years and have experience in group and classroom teaching as well. My students are extremely important to me and the best part of my day is sharing music with them!

*** Lesson Details ***
The structure of my lessons varies and are catered to the needs of the student, but most contain elements of the following: Warm-up, ear training, singing, rhythm development, review of etude and solo repertoire, duets, and assignments for the following week. My students are required to carry a notebook for weekly assignment reminders and notes on lesson material. My students are expected to practice daily and work hard in lessons, but the main goal is to have fun and create musical moments.

I provide my own instrument, one music stand, metronome/tuner, and extra method books. I expect my students to provide their own instrument, method books after we have decided which we will continue using, a notebook and pencil.

*** Specialties ***
As a music teacher I believe it is particularly important to vary the methods used in lessons to achieve the best result. My students are often expected to sing, buzz their mouthpieces, clap/say rhythms, improvise, as well as play their instruments throughout the lesson. I believe that ear training is extremely important. One of the methods I use to address this is call and response, where I will play a passage and my student will play it back to me using only their ear. Difficulty varies based on the level of the student. I also often play a passage on the piano, have the student sing it back to me, and then try to buzz it on their mouthpiece.
I have performing and teaching experience in classical, jazz, rock, and many other genres, so I enjoy teaching these to my students when they show interest.

About Me

Elizabeth! is a dedicated educator working in New York City and Los Angeles, committed to helping students of all ages gain greater confidence through music. Since 2005, she has worked with over 10,000 students at the elementary, middle, high school, and college levels, as well as with community groups of all ages. She is a regular clinician with the Queens College'€™s Kupferberg Center, NYC's Musicworks, and the LA Jazz Society'€™s Jazz in Schools program. She has presented clinics and assemblies for groups ranging in size from 10 to 800 people, and a sampling of previous clients includes: New York University (NYC), Universidad San Francisco de Quito (Ecuador), Jazz on the Volga Festival (Russia), Regis High School (NYC), Tamworth Elementary School (NH), Alameda High School (CA), Hanover High School (NH), and the Blue Oak School (CA). Each summer, she returns to her native Vermont to direct the Governor's Institute on the Arts, a 2-week program for 130 high school students.

Elizabeth also has a rich career as a trombonist and vocalist, performing with acts such as Michael Bolton, St. Vincent, and Matt Wilson. National TV appearances include American Idol, Late Night with Conan O'€™Brien, and Good Morning America. AOL compared her latest album of original music, Brainchildren, to Norah Jones.

Elizabeth holds a BA in Psychology from Harvard University, and an MA in Jazz Vocal Performance from Queens College. She is an endorsing artist for Getzen 3508R Custom trombones, and wears sequins as often as possible!

Lessons are meant to be fun and interactive, and directed by the topics students most want to learn.

Katie holds a Bachelor€™s degree in Music from Central Washington University and a Masters in Trumpet Performance from Rutgers University at Mason Gross School of the Arts. Her principal teachers include David Krauss; Principal Trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Matthew Muckey of the New York Philharmonic, and Steve Emery of the Boston Pops.

As a trumpeter, Katie has appeared with the Rodney Mack Philadelphia Big Brass, Artemis Orchestra, The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Sinfonietta Nova, the Yakima Symphony Orchestra, the Lake Chelan Bach Festival Orchestra and many others in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Washington state. Katie was also a semifinalist in the Ensemble Division of the National Trumpet Competition for three consecutive years and appeared as a featured performer at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Boulder, Colorado.

As a private teacher, Katie has worked as a resident artist and teacher at the Luzerne Music Center Festival in upstate New York, and as a regular member of Play On, Philly! She maintains an active private studio in Montclair, NJ.

Hi! My name is Tao.

I am a freelance trombonist and performer in NYC. I'm also a teacher, clinician, and artist.

I earned my trombone performance degree from the Dana School of Music at the Youngstown State University of Ohio. After college I toured extensively as a professional trombonist for Broadway musicals. I am a versatile musician with experience in classical, jazz, pop, funk, R&B, rock, show tunes, and more.

Trombone Players:
Lessons will focus on strengthening fundamentals and theory. Instrumentalists must understand how to speak the 'language' of their instrument through fundamentals before they can develop the highest level of mastery.
Advanced students will move on to flexibility and range mastery, along with the inclusion of popular audition repertoire.

Guitarists:
Fingering, hand placement, scales, chords, and rhythm changes. My lessons focus on learning by ear, understanding harmonic changes, and playing with other musicians.

Recording:
My lessons feature basic understanding of Mac Software including:

Plus, we will study the intricacies of microphones; how they work, where to place them, and how to get the most from your audio software.

Theory:
From triads to complex harmonic progressions, my lessons carry you through a College Course of Music Theory.
