About VOICE: I firmly believe that with the right training, anyone can sing! We all have the instrument built-in after all! Are you tone deaf? I can fix that. Crack on high notes? I can fix that. Nasal? Hoarse? Can't hold long notes? All of these are common vocal problems that can be easily be solved through guidance and practice. Trust me, no one ever regretted taking voice lessons!

About PIANO: How often do you sit down at a piano and wish you could just place your hands on the piano and magically create beautiful music? Piano is a challenging skill, but certainly not impossible. Learning to play the piano, even if it's never mastered, is such an incredible joy. Learning piano helps you to improve so many other skills as well, such as singing, any other instrument, and even math!

About ME: After completing my Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance at North Park University in Chicago, I moved here to NYC in 2010 to pursue my loves of music, acting, and education. Currently, I work as a Teaching Artist through Wingspan Arts, act in short films, and sing in concerts, operas, and musical theater productions around the city. I have been teaching acting, modeling, voice, and piano to children and adults of all ages for the last seven years. My goal is to professionally fuse my passion for music, theater, and education while continuing to learn, grow, and share the beauty and magic of the arts with others.

In my free time I enjoy movies, Broadway shows, cooking, exploring New York City, rock climbing, and swimming with sharks!

*** Lesson Details ***
For kids and adults alike, learning either voice or piano, I believe that you learn a lot more, and a lot faster when you feel comfortable and are having fun. With me, you will find an instructor who is patient, professional, motivating, challenging, and above all, encouraging. And fun. Did I mention fun?!

For voice students I like to use a mix of Broadway, Classical, and Popular music, depending on your needs and desires as a singer. I always assign a "teaching song" (a song that is good for training your voice) and a "fun song" (a song of your choice that you would like to sing just for fun!).

For piano students I like to use the Piano Adventures series by Faber & Faber. These are fun musical pieces, most of which are adapted from familiar classical works that have been arranged to teach you a certain technique.

For both, I always incorporate a balance of technique, music theory, and creative interpretation.

For acting students, it completely depends on your goals! We will work on different types of scripts, audition technique, and business skills for getting started in the real world!

Each lesson will likely involve warm-ups, games, reviews, new concepts, rehearsal, coaching, assignments, and rewards.

During our lessons, we will set short-term and long-term goals based on what you want to accomplish as a musician, what you expect from me, and what I feel you should be working on. I believe rewards are definitely appropriate!

Each one of the you has your own unique voice, hands, and ideas of what music means to you. My job is to get to know you and your musical self, and then design exercises and songs that will specifically fulfill your needs as a musician. Skill and technique are extremely important when learning to sing or play a musical instrument, but we must never forget what drew us to music in the first place! While we work on technique, we will also be discussing creativity, and the art of self expression, and have tons of fun in the process!

About Me

I have been a voice teacher for over twenty- five years. My background includes ten years of classical training with Maestro Julio Berrocal as well as vocal training through the Feldekrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. In acting I have studied with renowned Stanislavsky scholar Sonia Moore and Master acting teacher of the Strasberg Method, Marcia Haufrecht. I believe we all have something distinctive that can be developed and expressed through the voice. I work to help the student discover their individual and unique sound. I give them tools to gain the ability and confidence to achieve their goals. I empathize deeply with the challenges that students face both in studying voice and performance since I have been a professional singer for many years. Through my personal experience in the field I coach the student through the obstacles they may come up against. My students have gone on to become recording artists,Broadway performers, Blues and Cabaret artists, performing in concerts, radio, film and TV.

I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the students individual process of learning. My lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal exercise come next, then when the student is fully warmed up we will begin to work on songs. It is important that the student be part of the process of picking material since the more they personally respond to the material the more apt they are to be engaged in their lessons and the more quickly they will learn. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. They will have begun the process of extending their range and will understand the principles of performance in song.

Student focused learning is at the center of my teaching philosophy. At the beginning of the first lesson I want to find out the students musical goals, interests and motivation. I aim to meet the student where they are at, and find fun and engaging ways to teach them more about singing and music. After a few months of lessons students can expect to have further understanding of how the voice works (voice students), music theory, performance methods, technique and stylistic tools in their given genre. Students can also expect to have fun, my hope for students leave their lessons each week feeling uplifted, happy and confident.

In my experience, students benefit by learning from many different experiences that address their multiple intelligence e.g. logical, visual, musical, kinesthetic, verbal etc. When teaching I aim to connect skills being learnt with the context of performance while teaching to the students preference learning style.

Trust between my students and I provide the container for the learning process. As a teacher I believe it is my role to facilitate and engage in a reciprocal relationship that inspires the student to learn. My teaching approach is characterized by qualities of love and commitment to singing and music. I love sharing my passion, experiences and knowledge so that students may benefit and share the joy of music. I am flexible and laid back in my approach, while ensuring that each lesson is productive.

It is integral to the learning process to work incrementally, introducing new material skillfully and in achievable portions. This provides maximum opportunity for the student to have as many successes as possible during the lesson. I have found this way of working leaves the student feeling as if each task is achievable. As the teacher I maintain both long and short term goals with my students. In order to reach these desired goals it is important to see the bigger picture while working incrementally week to week.

About Me

Sarah C. is a Music Educator, Vocalist, and Choral Conductor dedicated to sharing the gift of music through creative education and innovative performance. As the Founder and Artistic Director of Sirens of Gotham, Sarah leads a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit music organization and performance ensemble for women in Manhattan. As a private voice teacher, Sarah works with students of all ages, promotes a sound method of vocal technique, prepares students for performances and auditions, and helps students to explore a wide variety of musical genres. Biography of Amanda H.
The Singer & The Story

AMANDA H. (aka Amanda Tedesco H.) has one true love and that is music, relying from a very young age on its strength to develop her passion and aspire to overcome personal challenges to become a consummate musician (violin & piano from age 2) and vocalist. Music is in Amanda's blood, passed onto her from her Concert Cellist mom, Cheryl (Manhattan School Of Music). It has been said that she sang even before she could speak. Her voice could sometimes be heard from the rooftops of Newark, NJ where she would dwell for some months of her infancy with her musical mother & her guitar strumming €œestranged€ songwriting Dad, Gregory H., (who composed for Sarah Vaughn and others) . From the age of two, the multi-ethnic (African American, Cherokee Indian, Italian, & Egyptian) Amanda H. practically lived in the orchestra pit while her mother (graduate of Manhattan School of Music) would play some of the greatest musicals and symphonies ever written on her cello, along with her Aunt, Pat Holley, (writer for Stephanie Mills and herself a Juilliard trained composer, vocalist, and arranger). AMANDA has been surrounded by the gift of music, is a published poet (Columbia Press at age 16), and is currently working with esteemed major label executives on her upcoming release (TBA).

Inspired by other female artists, such as, Whitney, Mariah, Aretha, Ella, and Billie she was determined to join these healing and inspiring vocalists. She always survived tough times by listening to and creating great music. When she was 8 years old performing at local events in her native NJ, she astonished audiences with her soul, maturity and her connection to the sophisticated lyrics much too advanced for her tender age. AMANDA has even performed with the world renowned, Les Paul, at the jazz hot spot, Iridium as a teenager. Her former manager, the late great Phil Ramone encouraged her to carry her Pop/R&B/SOUL voice and writing style into today's pop generation.

MISS H. has recently been featured on the 2013 INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS website and was also accepted onto the 2014 Grammy ballot in the traditional R&B category.

AMANDA€™S recent collaborations have been with Grammy and Oscar Award Winning songwriters and producers including Rob Fusari, Nikki Gregoroff, Andy Marvel, Red One, Dee Stupart, Michael Narado Walden, Andre Fennell, Pam Sheyne, Gabriel Blu, Joseph Joubert, Dimitri Erlich, JayDaniels, Alex Garingas, Will Villalona, Dennis Doc Williams, Legz Dymond, Charles Wallert, Shaggy, C'Ray (Stargate), Phil Ramone, etc, and is under the development of her esteemed partner Andrew Rahmdanny (Former VP of UNIVERSAL MOTOWN, Dir. of Artist development at Uptowne Records developing Boys 2 Men, Mary J. Her lyrical talents stem from her outstanding poetic voice which earned her multiple awards, scholarships, and publications with Columbia Press at the ages of 16-18. She is also an accomplished actor (member of the Actors' Equity Association). Throughout High School, Amanda appeared in over seven leading and supporting roles in Off B'Way musicals along with an internationally distributed (Blockbuster & Suncoast) drama in which she took the supporting role and before she even graduated, had studied extensively and one on one with Juilliard, Tony, and Emmy award winning singers, teachers, actors, and musicians including Michael Imperioli, Sharon Angela, Nick Sandow, and Vince Curatola at Studio Dante along with Chris Scott, Petronia Paley, Tina Lane, Bob McHugh, LaVerne Reede, and Monica Johnson among many others. She began violin from the age of 2 and, throughout her teenaged years, played in numerous orchestras and ensembles.

As a teacher, the young Miss H. started at age 13 teaching neighborhood kids the violin, vocals, and piano, and would charge a humble fee in order to pay for studio time to record her "hit songs". She has been working with students from all walks of life from children on B'Way, special needs children, adult beginners, choral directors, major labels such as Sony and Universal Records and Multi-Grammy winning recording artists on Sony as well as artists in development under Universal Records and its subsidiaries, Sony RCA & EPIC, & Capitol Records. She combines traditional vocal technique from her studies as a child with renowned Juilliard vocalists and professors with contemporary techniques such as Alexander technique and phonetics as well as vocal anatomy learned in her time at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts Conservatory in NYC, SLS (Speech Level Singing), and the physics and science of sound and energy, in addition to recording technique and she works with each individual building up the vocal mechanism and each singer's repertoire and artistry based on each of her pupils' unique physiology and desires as an artist. Amanda strives to give her vocalists the ultimate artistic fulfillment which can be achieved with a strong foundation. She trains your voice to support and allow what it has been made to be - limitless with full density, freedom, unique and distinct in tone just as a fingerprint is, and range and agility. She knows that, with a strong foundation, serious muscle training, music theory, and self awareness, there is nothing we can't achieve as a team. She provides performance opportunities at NYC Off B'Way venues for hard working students at Symphony Space and The Cutting Room and recording workshops and intensives at renowned studios such as the legendary Chung King, Platinum, and Premier Studios in Manhattan and many students have made it into prestigious conservatories and colleges such as the Berklee College Of Music, William Paterson University pop and jazz programs, and the Clive Davis Institute at NYU.

She is also the founder of the Amanda H. Children's Foundation - an umbrella organization involved in community outreach programs in NYC (The Future Society), (THE FLAWLESS FOUNDATION), and NJ (SPECIAL NEEDS PERFORMING ARTS ALLIANCE) with the intention to utilize her platform as a recording artist in order to work for children in need here and abroad.
