Thomas D. Greenbelt, MD

About Thomas

My musical life began during the "folk boom" of the 1960's. I began songwriting and performing during my high school years. Later I was a member of a folk-rock band called The Bean Angels. We preformed and recorded in the Iowa City, Iowa area. Later I attended Montana State University where I studied music education. My training included: piano skills, music theory, music history, aural perception, conducting, and vocal pedagogy. I have several decades experience in teaching. I have taught guitar, piano, voice, and ukulele, and have directed a children's choir.

I've been taking ukulele lessons from Tom for about 2 months and have just added voice lessons. Tom is a very thoughtful, kind man. He has a great deal of knowledge about the theoretical and practical/performance aspects of instruction. He is also excellent at adapting his lessons to my own particular goals. What more could you want!

What a great experience for our family!

In August, our 7 yr. old daughter, Nathalie, started piano lessons with Thomas. She played her first Christmas carol here in early November! Thomas is a wonderful instructor! Undertstanding, warm, and very patient! I highly recommend his services!!

Justin P. Fairfax, VA

Help teach method to learns different common techniques and chords so the student can learn their favorites songs to sing along with.

About Justin

I understand that there are many desires a pupil can have about learning music, especially towards the practicality of the modern world and I hope to gear the student towards that. I have worked with children for almost a decade so I am comfortable with youth education. My experience with working with children is mostly with the Boy Scouts of America since I was 14. From teaching scouts about nature, to directing shooting ranges as an NRA Rifle Safety Officer, to eventually managing a camp. As a young adult who has just finished their music degree from collage and working to further my education, I can understand the process of learning a musical instrument and guide the student on a smoother path to their goals.

Justin is a natural teacher!!

I had a great experience learning under Justin's guidance. He really took the time to learn how much understanding I had of my instrument before he started teaching, so he knew exactly what I needed more work on. I can see he definitely tailors lessons for each individual student's needs. He was patient and introduced new ways of learning that really helped me grasp the material. Although he sticks to a general lesson-plan for each session, he gave me plenty of freedom to play around and jam. I would recommend him to anybody, and have already referred him to some friends. If you're looking for a professional, yet fun and relaxed teacher, you've found him!

The uke is so easy to learn and fun to play that it is my favorite instrument to teach.
I teach standard chord progressions and rhythmic concepts for learning correctly by studying songs that are familiar to the student. My goal as always is to get the student and I to play duets. If they can keep up they know what they are doing.

About Scott

A native of Washington DC, Scott has performed for over 45 years in various shows, bands & theaters. He has worked with The Glenn Miller Orchestra and The Modernaires; The Peter Duchin Orchestra; The Ink Spots; The Tokens; Rory (Disney Channel); Charlie Byrd; Susannah McCorkle; Keely Smith & John Colianni (accompanist for Mel Torme) to name a few.
He has also toured for the USO with Miss USA in Europe 85’ (With an 18 year old Halle Berry) and Miss USA in Central America 86’.
Besides playing a in few theater pits, Scott has also performed on the stage as a musical character in the Kennedy Center’s ‘92 production of “Pump Boys & Dinettes”, taking the role of inbred “Eddie” to new lows.

I never imagined a beginner guitar class to be so comprehensive, challenging and yet so much fun. There's a lot to learn about playing the guitar from holding it to learning how to read music to playing a tune. Scott's easy going style encourages even the most slothful students like myself. We do it all in 1 and a half hours twice a week. His students have a wide range of experience with music and the guitar but at each session Scott is able to ensure that each one of us gets something out of the class. For example, he'll instruct the advanced students to play a more complicated version of a piece. Or he'll touch base with every student in the class at least twice by physically walking over and showing them something, asking a question, checking on their guitar, etc. Finally, he has those qualities that make for outstanding teachers - he not only knows and loves his work but he's really good at it. So each session is a fun mini concert lesson.

I've been taking lessons for about a month now and I have learned so much. Not only basics on the instrument but also music theory which I've always had problems with before. Each lesson is a thoroughly enjoyable experience and I look forward to my lessons each week.

Scott is easy-going, patient and seems to know what is needed for the stage of instruction that I am at. I highly recommend Scott as an instructor. He has helped me with the ukulele tremendously in just four lessons. Couldn't ask for a better instructor.

Being a professional singer, I am looking quite a bit from Scott of what I call all around vocal performance and training. He is supportive and encouraging and has years of knowledge under his belt.

If you want someone who knows his stuff, work with him.
Geoff S. Fairfax, VA

Experienced in teaching ukulele for over 5 years. Experienced in teaching other stringed instruments (guitar, bass, mandolin) for over 30 years.

About Geoff

I played on a toy piano when I was very young, learning a bit of sight reading from my Mother, while listening to classical, jazz, and rock music. When I was 12, I learned guitar and later took private piano lessons from a prominent Philadelphia instructor. After playing in a rock band in high school, I went to college and received my degree in Physics. During this time, I joined a choir, and sang and played guitar in a contemporary vocal group where I became the lead guitarist and vocal arranger, and later became the director. I also played guitar in my church, as well as in a small folk group, performing music of the Beatles, Bacharach, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, and many others. I also played or sung in a number of weddings during my college days.

Upon graduation, I moved to ...

If you're interested in studying classical guitar you know that it is both difficult and important to find a quality guitar instruction. Look no further. Geoff is fantastic. His daily exercises for guitar have helped improve my technique dramatically. I'm so glad I found him and had an opportunity to work with him.

I am enjoying my lessons. You are being extra patient with me I suspect. My practices since our last have gone better I think. I think I am picking up things better. I practiced quite a lot today. Every commercial break in the football game as well as half time. See you in two weeks. Thanks

Sign up for classes with John. Just do it, and you won't regret it.

Whatever the opposite of musically-gifted is, that is what I am. I'm an adult beginner in the truest sense of the word - never read sheet music, couldn't hold a beat to save my life, and hadn't played an instrument. EVER. That's why I'm still amazed that I've learned to play a couple of simple songs after a few lessons with John - it's a great achievement on his part!

John has the patience of a saint and a great ability to teach. If I don't understand a concept or have difficulty contorting my fingers to hold a certain chord, he shows me a different way and can break it down to simpler terms. He's really a great teacher. On top of that, he's laid back, approachable, amiable, and very understanding of my busy work schedule. He makes sure I leave each lesson with enough homework to practice and gives me constructive criticism to work on my technique. Like another reviewer said, John is really worth his weight in gold!!
