Edwin is extremely patient and good natured. His knowledge of music and his ear for chords is amazing. I am a beginner and within a few lessons I am playing full songs from major bands. I couldn't be happier with Edwin and will be working with him for a long time.

Edwin has been teaching my 10 year old daughter for a year. He is sooo patient. It is nice that he asks her what songs she would like to learn and it allows her to have a say in what she plays! He is a great teacher!!

I've always wanted to learn guitar and have had one lying around for awhile. I've been on youtube to try to learn some basics, but it was great to finally get some real feedback and pointers. Edwin was very patient and helped me get some basic rhythms down. Now I've got some specific stuff to work on til my next lesson.

The live 1-on-1 lessons with awesome TakeLessons teachers are a must if you are serious about learning properly!
Richard C. Irvine, CA

Lean how to play bluegrass banjo including melody and finger picking. Also "Clawhammer" techniques.

About Richard

I have studied, performed and taught music for over 30 years. Accordion was my first instrument at age 7 which was a great introduction to the keyboard, melody and harmony. That was followed by guitar and other stringed instruments (Banjo, Ukelele) as well as drums. I studied with great teachers in the past as well as at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. I have also performed at the Cape Cod Jazz Festival, The Bakersfield Jazz Festival and numerous club dates and private functions throughout New York, New England and California.

Professional and patient with kids!

Mr. Richard, as we call him, has been fantastic with my 7 year old son. His early recommendations maximized my son's guitar interaction and the visible (audible?) progress being made actively encourages practice at home.

Mr. Richard is able to give simplified homework that my son can understand. As opposed to "practice for 20 minutes per day", Mr. Richard was able to identify what works with my son's personality and established practice criteria that was much more effective.

Glenn S. Long Beach, CA

I teach 5 string banjo, and have students learning contemporary songs as well as traditional styles. Soloing and right hand techniques, scales and a variety of styles covered.

About Glenn

Hi, I'm Glenn. Thank you for viewing my profile. I've been teaching students for over 20 years, playing all styles and levels of music, from day-one beginners to seasoned pros seeking to sharpen their playing skills. I teach both traditional notation and tablature, writing my own teaching methods in both formats. I can transcribe any song or solo for you, and can arrange the music to fit your particular level of skill.

I earned a B.A. in Music Composition and an A.A. in music theory, and have worked as a professional musician since graduation. I play in a variety of bands that cover rock, jazz, surf, oldies, and country, and also write and arrange music for those bands as well as writing my own music that can be heard on my own YouTube channel.

The first song I ...

My son is 7 years of age and has never received any music lessons. I bought him a guitar for his birthday and he was just happy to play with it without any guitar lessons. I convinced him otherwise. I did not know what to expect from Glenn. I knew about him because he was highly recommended in our Long Beach neighborhood. I signed my son up and after a few minutes of being with Glenn, my son was hooked. He came away from his first 30 minute session saying, “wow…I did not know I could play the guitar!”. My son was so excited. As a parent…that is very exciting! I was sold! I was amazed how he was able to pick up what Glenn taught him within that first lesson. Glenn made it fun. The atmosphere was very relaxed and his style of teaching clicked with my son right away. After basically 12 sessions, my son was able to perform at a musical recital Glenn hosted for his students. Not only was I proud of my son, I also got to see kids of all ages and adults performing that day and it was pretty impressive. Overall, I highly recommend Glenn. He is able to keep my 7 year old boy focused and teaches him effectively while making it fun!

Calvin is great to work with. I look forward to my lesson each week. He goes the extra mile by sending me practice tracks and focuses on the music I want to learn. I am in my mid 50's and never had any formal music training. Calvin is fantastic and a great person too.
