Accompaniment, Acoustic Guitar, Arrangement and Composition, Audio Engineering, Audition Prep, Bass Guitar, Blues Guitar, Classical Guitar, Composition, Country Guitar, Country Singing, Ear Training, Guitar, Harmonica, Jazz Voice, Musical Theater, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Singing, Songwriting

About Me

I hold a Music and English degree from Hamline University, but that doesn't make me a good teacher. I've played professionally for over 25 years, have taught English as a Second Language, Hockey and Audio Engineering, taught people age 5 to 75, and have taught private music lessons full time in Minneapolis for the past 9 years, but this doesn't make me a good teacher. What makes me a good teacher is that I have an infectious love of music and a passionate commitment to helping people. I do have specialties, like helping singer/songwriters develop their lyrics, arrangements, voice, and performance as well as helping artists get through creativity blocks, stage fright and preparing for studio recording. My experience as a producer, studio musician and audio engineer has allowed me to understand what an artist needs from writing a song to releasing a CD that represents who you are at your best. I love what I do whether you have aspirations to be a professional musician or simply want you or your child to enjoy playing an instrument for yourself or friends and family.

*** Lesson Details ***
From the first lesson, my students learn, they grow, they feel good about themselves - and they get results. Whether adult, teenager or child, I find out what music inspires and I use this music to give access to learning regardless of level. Whether a Disney song, the Doors, or Debussy, I fuel your lesson with what lights you up. I am positive, attentive and also discerning. Quickly, I find out what learning style works best for my student; by ear, visually, or intellectually, and I spend the time to customize their materials and lesson plans to an extraordinary degree. If a student thrives with me being highly energized, or with me being more mellow, or if they have special needs, I'‚™m able to adapt to what works best for my student. It is a joy and privilege to be a teacher, but especially a music teacher!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have instruments, amps, laptop, mics...anything we need.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I often allow new students to use a loaner guitar of mine until they feel comfortable committing to purchasing their own. I help them find the right guitar for themselves by searching for used gear and accompanying them to the store. I provide all audio files and written materials.

*** Specialties ***
I teach ALL styles. I most often teach students wanting to play and sing songs from pop, show tunes, alternative, country, rock, singer/songwriter and jazz standards. I specialize in songwriting and often my students create their own compositions regardless of level. Improvisation (just playing!) is also a key part of my teaching.

Subjects Taught

Broadway Singing, Classical Guitar, Guitar, Music Performance, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Piano, Singing, Songwriting

About Me

I studied voice at McPhail Center for the Arts in high school. I
studied piano, voice, guitar at Augsburg college. I performed in
musicals, small ensembles. I write my own music and have performed it around town for years. I have sung in bands and solo. I recorded two CD's with my original music. My original songs are eclectic and contain jazz, blues, folk, country, and soft rock songs. I love music theory and writing. I taught at Mars music until it closed, then taught at Minnesota School of Music for a couple of years. Then moved my students to my home, where I have been teaching for the last ten years. I teach all ages. My piano students perform in music auditions like "The Guild", my guitar students have performed in school concerts and talent shows, my vocal students have performed in
musicals, and solos in their choirs. One of my adult vocal students went on to perform main stage at WE FEST and recorded a CD in Nashville, another adult student is touring around the U.S. she recorded three excellent CD's. Other adult students perform around town. And of course some of my adults just learn to play for themselves. I teach all styles of music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I use method books in guitar and piano, and encourage note reading. In guitar I also teach tab and chords. I use supplemental books and solo sheets once I learn the interest of my student, if they lean toward jazz and blues, I put them in books with that style, or if it is Classical I have books with the classical greats. My vocal students study songs that fit their age and interests. My goal is to find music that makes my students feel passionate about their music, so practicing isn't just drudgery but something they want to do. I also teach technique and theory. I provide a studio class where students perform
for each other, eat pizza and play music games that promote note reading and rhythm in a fun way. In 3-6 months students will be able to read music and hopefully will be filled with the excitement of music
to keep learning more.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lessons are taught in the front room with a waiting area for kids/students, The teaching space contains piano and guitars, amps, microphones. No pets. Seating is available.

*** Specialties ***
For piano I use Faber method books, piano literature books etc. For guitar I use Hal Leonard method books, and Charles Duncan method books. I teach vocal in classical, music theatre and guitar playing band singers, in country, and rock. I teach classical as well as blues styles and ragtime and pop, and encourage creating own songs where there is interest. In guitar I teach note reading as well as tab and teach classical, acoustic and electric guitar. I teach students from beginning to advanced levels.

About Me

Hey, my name is Alex. I'm a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, keyboards, voice, drums, flute, etc.), composer, performer, recording artist, arranger/transcriber, recording engineer/producer & music educator.

I graduated from the University of St. Thomas summa cum laude in 2011 with a Bachelor's Degree in Guitar Performance, with minors in Music Production & Composition. While attending St. Thomas I served as the Music Theory tutor, as well as the live sound/stage/light/recording technician for student & faculty recitals.

I have been playing professionally & teaching for over a decade. My passion for music is something that I love to share with anyone else who feels inclined to make music. My goal is to share the skills & knowledge I've acquired throughout my experiences with those willing to learn & dedicate themselves to the craft of making music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am experienced in most major genres of music: classical, jazz, blues, rock, funk, folk, metal, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, instrumental rock, "shred," pop, world music, electronica, etc. & feel comfortable conveying the techniques, approaches & idioms to a student by breaking them down into digestable components, while making these new ideas relatable to material they are already familiar with.

In the end, I want the student to learn what they're most interested in learning. I'm here to answer any questions they may have & with my vast experience, I feel confident that I will be able to either answer these questions or point them in the right direction. Some topics covered:

Scales/modes
Ear training
Guitar-specific techniques (ie bending, tapping, sweep picking, etc.)
Songwriting & Composition
Sightreading
Improvisation
Chordal theory & how to read charts
Practice routines & approaches
Guitar maintenance
Guitar-based gear (guitars, amplifiers, effects, picks, slides, capos, etc.)

The student will learn at the pace they set for themselves & can only get out of it the amount of time they put into it. I expect my students to practice on a regular basis (however brief each session may be). Consistency is key for progress to be made, & if they hold up their end of the bargain the payoffs will be quite substantial!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Practice amplifier, tuner, music stand(s), guitar picks & cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide guitar neck paper. I expect the students to have their own instrument & any materials they may need to achieve the goals they've set for themselves (such as a weekly notebook).

*** Specialties ***
Progressive rock, classic rock, blues, jazz, funk, disco, classical, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, flamenco guitar; music theory, sight-reading, composition, songwriting, film scoring, music production.

Classical Guitar, Guitar

About Me

Dear Students and Parents,
I have been playing guitar for over 30 years. I played in various rock bands for fun growing up and then developed a passion for acoustic finger-style guitar playing by songwriters like James Taylor. While still in high school, I opened a concert for Livingston Taylor (James Taylor's™ brother). After high school I decided to pursue my passion for guitar in college and received my Bachelors degree in Classical Guitar Performance studying with Robert Guthrie at Southern Methodist University. I also love to write music so after graduating from SMU I went out to Los Angeles and worked in the film music industry at Warner Bros. Studios for many years. I am currently working at MakeMusic, Inc., a world leader in music technology whose mission is to develop innovative solutions that transform how music is composed, taught, learned, and performed. I currently play electric and acoustic guitar in the worship band at Westwood Community Church. We cover many different styles of music that make it challenging and fun to play.
Making music makes me happy and I want to share that experience with you or your child on the guitar. The guitar i™s a great instrument for sharing the joy of making music.

Thanks for taking the time to check out my page and I hope to see you soon!

Mark F.

*** Lesson Details ***
I've had some great guitar teachers in my life and I've learned a lot from them about music and playing the guitar. I will use what my teachers taught me to help you or your child learn how to play the guitar. I teach beginning to advanced players (except for classical guitar which I teach beginning to intermediate levels), kids and adults, and will work with you in a fun and challenging environment to make sure you are getting the most out of your investment. I am a very calm and friendly teacher who will make our lessons fun while also encouraging you to make progress. I will strive to keep you motivated to improve and will document your progress with the use of technology like audio recordings and video so you can see and hear your progress. I like to work from guitar method books so we can establish specific and measurable goals, but I do respect and accommodate different learning styles. And, of course, we will™ work progressively on any songs that you have your heart set on learning so that you can soon be playing the music that you love!
I believe that there i™s always room for improvement. I continue to look for new ways to improve my own playing. I a™m sure that I will be learning some things from you, too, so let'™s get started!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I currently teach in the living room of my home while my basement music room is being remodeled. I provide a music stand, a metronome, a tuner and recording capability so students can see and hear themselves play. I expect the student to bring his or her own instrument and to purchase the book(s) that we'll be working from.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide a small amp for electric guitar if the student doesn't have one. I expect the
student to provide his or her own instrument, a music stand, and to
purchase the book(s) that we'll be working from.

*** Specialties ***
I can teach you to play guitar in any style of music that you want to play, from folk to rock , country to classical and bluegrass to contemporary Christian. I specialize in finger-style acoustic guitar that I have adapted from my many years of classical guitar training, but I also love to play the electric guitar, too.
