About Me

Music is the means to create a portal into our souls, so that we may see each other for who and what we are, not merely as what we do. I want to help foster those young, middle-aged, and not-as-young how to tap into their own soul portals through music so that they may find others' as well. I believe that in order to entertain others with your voice or your instrument playing, one must first be able to entertain oneself - all the while having fun doing it! As a recent graduate of the University of California, Davis with a double major in Music History & Ethnomusicology and African-American & African Studies; a former co-host of the popular hip-hop radio show ATF Radio: All Things Fresh on KDVS 90.3 FM; a former Music Director of The Afterglow of UC Davis; and a current Vocal Music Performance graduate student at the University of Redlands, I have come in contact and learned from a vast amount of different musicians and professionals. A classically-trained bass-baritone with roots in R&B, Soul, Rock, Pop, and Jazz, I have aspirations to help each and every student realize their full musical potential.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching style is very friendly, inviting, and audience-driven. In the beginning, I strive to refer to my presence in the lessons as a fly-on-the-wall, so to speak, in order for my students to get out of their own way and sing as if no one's watching. From there, I apply the audience aspect - singing not only for enjoyment, but for entertainment for yourself and for others as well. If one is able to build that frame of mind in their lessons, their actual performances will not be too far from what they've already dealt with before.

I provide teaching and repertoire books, as well as instrumentation for myself (i.e. guitar, misc. tools for specific lessons). I expect my students to provide a piano (or keyboard equivalent), pitch pipe, and instrument if applicable (i.e. guitar), and, of course, themselves!

I can provide teaching and repertoire books, as well as instrumentation for myself (i.e. guitar, misc. tools for specific lessons). I expect students to provide a piano (or keyboard equivalent), pitch pipe, and instrument if applicable (i.e. guitar).

*** Specialties ***
I utilize the Kodaly method for vocal performance, starting at the basic level of tonal scales (major, minor, harmonic, melodic, etc.) and Solfege application to serve as a foundational base; rhythm syllables such as "ta" and "doo". Additionally, foundational breath control is applied, as it is very important for the singer to learn how to control their breath and support their sound. From there, repertoire mimicry is applied, or what I call "phrase building," as it is important for any singer to be able to effectively create vocal phrases.

I utilize guitar repertory books such as Mel Bay's Children's Guitar Chord Book and Modern Classical Guitar Method books for guitar pedagogy. These allow the student to learn chords, picking and fingering techniques in a academic lesson while also learning performance techniques with an one-on-one instructor.

For piano, I use the publication A New Approach to Keyboard Harmony to learn chord progressions, sequences, modulations, realization of both figured and un-figured basses, improvisation, and score reading. Learning these techniques will help transition students seamlessly to various styles and genres that incorporate the piano, helping you learn and love the piano without frustrating stoppages that often lead us away from lesson continuity.

About Me

I was born and raised in Yucaipa, CA and I have a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from the University of Redlands. I have been performing for 12 years. Some of my favorite roles include The Baker's Wife (Into the Woods), Joy (Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella), Jenny (Company), Joanne (RENT), Jan (Grease), Milly (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers), Abigail Adams (1776), and Despina (Cosi Fan Tutte). I was artistic director for the University of Redlands Musical Theatre Company for two years and sang for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Arts Festival. Last summer I had the amazing opportunity to attend the American Theatre Wing's SpringboardNYC program.

As a teacher, I am very positive, patient, and I work hard to understand and cater to a student's taste in music, theatre, art, and information. I focus 50% of my performance lessons on physical and vocal warm-ups and 50% on the student's chosen repertoire. I believe in working towards a goal, so I always push my students to perform. I keep a calendar of auditions that I encourage my students to attend as well as holding recitals with other local studios. I also keep up to date on local performances, galleries, touring Broadway shows, and operas that I organize trips to see when I can.

I fully enjoy teaching music and theater to others and spreading the art of performance, reaching out to all generations. Every since I was a little girl, I have been devoted to the arts. When I began college, I knew that music was my path. As a music major I developed a deeper understanding of music theory, piano, voice, and theater. I received my A.A. in Music at College of the Desert and my Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Redlands- which I attended on a music scholarship. I have played leading roles in several operas and musicals in Southern California, including Gianni Schicchi, Die Fledermaus, La Boheme (DTL nominee), The Impresario, The Grand Duke, Patience (DTL award), Cosi fan tutte, Little Women the Musical, Seussical the Musical, and many more. I have also appeared in several concerts, opera scenes, competitions (winning music scholarships and theater awards), and worked as a singer at churches, restaurants, and in pop bands. I continue to perform and study music because performing is a part of who I am and I could never live without it.

With this experience under my belt, I feel a desire to pass on my knowledge to students. I carry a strong passion to help people develop their abilities and make them their own. I truly believe that if someone wants something out of life then they WILL achieve it with dedication, perseverance, confidence, and by having FUN doing it!

*** Lesson Details ***
I begin each voice and acting lesson with a warm-up to prepare the student for their lesson. Next, we do a series of exercises specially designed to help each individual develop their skill in a way that best fits them. We then work on a piece of their choice for the remainder of the lesson, perfecting their technique and helping them become performance ready. I teach with patience and fun because I feel that this is the key to achieving goals and inspiring a good habit of practice.

If you do not already have a song, sheet music, or monologue (acting students) to bring in I can help you choose one during your first lesson. I also require that my students keep a practice journal to record their daily practice sessions. If possible, please bring a recording device of some sort so you can record your lessons. It is a HUGE help to be able to listen back on your lessons and to use them in your daily practice! No experience is necessary, that is what I'm here for!

About Me

I am primarily a composer, guitarist, tenor, pianist and percussionist and I love sharing what I have learned with others and watching my students develop and grow. My goal is to teach my students until they are better than me, so I hold no secrets, tricks or techniques back and I devote my time and energy to help others become the best musicians, artists and people they can be.I have a BA in music composition and a BA in music history, both from California State University, San Bernardino. I play the guitar, bass, piano, drums, orchestral percussion, mandolin, ukulele, banjo, recorder, harmonica and didgeridoo with varying levels of proficiency and have experience in music theory, songwriting, recording, MIDI, arranging, singing (contemporary, broadway and opera), and acting/performing. I have performed in The United States, Austria, Spain, Australia and New Zealand and have 13 years of experience, development, mistakes and successes to offer my students. I love learning new things and have been teaching as a profession since 2007. I am also First Aid & CPR certified, Live Scan fingerprinted, FBI background checked, Safe Environment trained and a Child Abuse Mandated Reporter.

I do not use a set curriculum. I prefer to discuss goals and music with my students and their parents to determine what genres, styles and techniques they are most interested in. I then use techniques I have gained through experience along with songs and classical exercises to develop strong technique, a developed ear and the ability to read music. I do expect students to be disciplined, practice regularly, and be prepared for lessons, enabling them to expect the same from me. Whether a student wants to be a classical virtuosi or learn how to play a song they heard on the radio, I will keep the lessons fun and interesting for anyone willing to practice and learn, and I will always to my best to cater to the student's individual needs and goals.

I provide all copies of music, handouts, exercises, etc. Students are expected (when applicable) to have an instrument in good, working condition.

I form all of my lessons around being able to learn, memorize and play songs, read written musical notation (along with sight-reading & technical exercises), and improvisation (based on scales and exercises).

For guitar and it's relatives (bass, mandolin, ukulele, banjo) I can teach any style or genre of music, including modern tapping techniques, and I also teach TAB notation.

I teach both classical and popular piano, usually combining classical sight reading exercises while learning both classical and popular repertoire.

I have experience acting and singing on stage in both non-musical and musical productions, as well as five years of classical vocal experience singing in high school and collegiate ensembles. Being in these environments has equipped me with the tools and exercises to be able to teach everything from basic singing to fundamentals in broadway and opera.

I also have a small studio in my home where I write and record, providing me with the opportunity to also teach recording, songwriting and music theory.

I will work not only to transform my students into singers/musicians/actors, but simply into better human beings. Some say it's not over til the fat lady sings...I say it's not over until you look that fat lady in the face and take your rightful place beside her!

When it comes to academics, learning can sometimes be frustrating. That's why I contour my lessons to each individual student, so that they may learn the material, on their terms. There is nothing more satisfying than an "A HA!" moment, and that is my aim in each and every lesson.

*** Lesson Details ***
Each lesson will be different depending on what the student needs. Therefore, if a student has a song/piece selected and needs assistance in making it their own, work on riffs/runs, or performance technique, then we would warm-up, they'd show me what they have already, and from there I would work with them to manufacture the best presentation of the piece. Now, if a student is learning technique, then the lesson would revolve around acquiring those techniques through demonstration, application, and repetition.

For students learning academics, the student would need to have material prepared and ready to work on.

It would be best if piano/keyboard were readily available, however I have access to one.

I specialize in Voice, specifically Opera. I focus on technique and style. So riffing/runs would be a part of this.
