John G. Brooklyn, NY

I am a professional Upright Bassist as well, and I have been playing throughout the country for 16 years. I play jazz, rock, pop, singer songwriter, funk, r&b and latin music. I have experience playing many different situations, including clubs, churches, private events, weddings and recordings.

About John

John G. was born in 1987 in Phoenix, Arizona. He started playing music when he was seven years old, learning classical guitar, and taking up bass not soon after. John used all the knowledge he gained at a young age to become one of Phoenix's best young musicians. He was in demand for all kinds of gigs: from playing jazz in restaurants and coffee shops, to playing in pits for musicals, to gigs with rock bands and playing in churches. John also began to compose, being influenced by Duke Ellington and Igor Stravinsky, including songs for jazz band and electronic music.

John moved to New York City to attend Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Jeremy Manasia, Garry Dial, and Jay Anderson. John learned much about composition from Richard Sussman, and refined his ...

Christopher G. Brooklyn, NY

As a professional upright bass player for the past five or so years, I can help you with any thing from the basics to what to know on a professional gig. I can teach classical technique, Jazz soloing/walking, how to get good sound/intonation, and give professional help for those trying to bridge the gap into the gigging realm.

About Christopher

In my years of teaching and being taught I have realized that the best teachers are those who really focus on the needs of the student and help them realize their passion for playing music. This usually involves a lesson plan which combines both technical aspects and working on songs, so that the student is both working and having fun at the same time!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide music, music stand, amp, etc. I expect a student to have their own instrument, although I can supply one of my instruments for lessons.

*** Specialties ***
I can teach from beginner to very advanced on guitar, bass guitar and upright bass in the styles of Rock, Jazz, Blues, Pop, R&B, Hip-Hop etc. I also have experience in other subjects such as Logic Pro, Composition, Music Theory, ...

Chris is a phenomenal teacher! I already have a strong background in music theory, but after only a few lessons I feel like I have some facility on the guitar. His hands on approach was refreshing and effective. Highly recommended!

Christopher is the best teacher ever! I was playing my favorite songs from the first class! Christopher explains everything clearly, he is patient and teaches whatever you wanna learn. I highly recommend him if you wanna learn fast and wanna be playing music from the first day. :)
Phil R. Brooklyn, NY

I address the fundamentals of upright bass playing through method books and etudes (Simandl, Billé, Kreutzer, Storch-Hrabe..). I tailor each lesson depending on an individual student's level and needs, always making sure they feel encouraged and supported. Even for students that just want to learn jazz, I still make sure to place some emphasis on classical studies with the bow so as to further deepen their understanding of the upright bass. For jazz students, there are lots of listening assignments in addition to the technique and theory of constructing walking bass lines that's covered in lessons.

About Phil

Hi! My name is Phil. Thank you for stopping by!

I spent a large chunk of my childhood in São Paulo, Brazil but am originally from Richmond, VA. I've lived in the city since finishing up my undergrad studies in 2004 and have since performed in all kinds of settings (jazz duets through big bands, bluegrass bands, folk-rock, chamber orchestras and full symphony orchestras). I love the rich and vibrant music scene that NYC has to offer and I see every day a chance to learn something new.

I have experience teaching beginner guitar and beginner piano lessons in one-on-one music school settings at the Rye Arts Center in Rye, NY, which I left so that I could pursue my masters degree in classical double bass performance (SUNY Stony Brook, ’12… I also have a B.A. ...

Phil taught Music Together classes at my center for a few years and was terrific with kids and their parents. He really understands how to make music learning fun and playful for children. Families absolutely loved him! He has the playful qualities and understanding of developmentally appropriate practice needed to teach children well and the seriousness of a professional musician to be a great teacher for adults. I highly recommend him!

Phil is an excellent teacher of upright bass. I had other teachers who were OK but Phil is better by far. He emphasizes fundamentals but keeps the lessons interesting and enjoyable. He is open to hear about what you are doing musically and using some of the lesson time to work on those interests. I have improved a lot since starting with him. He is also pleasant, reliable and easy to deal with.

I received a bachelor's degree in Jazz on the double bass, studying with the incredible Robert Hurst. I can teach you how to develop a great sound and help you become the upright bass player you want to be, whether that's jazz or any other style! I include the bow extensively in my training, but that's by no means 100% essential.

About Chris

Originally from the Detroit, MI area, Chris has been performing bass professionally since 2004. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz Studies from the University of Michigan, he went on to perform in orchestras on cruise ships. Here he became Musical Director and was responsible for 36 musicians on board, as well as the product delivered to guests.

Chris loves teaching all ages and levels. Whatever your needs may be, he caters to them, and, most importantly, listens to what YOU the student wants from lessons. There is no "cookie-cutter" method to teaching or learning, and you will find Chris's methods both refreshing and effective.

Chris specializes in electric bass (fretted or fretless) and upright bass, with some experience on acoustic guitar and arranging. ...

Tom B. Brooklyn, NY

I have been studying Jazz Double at Universities and Conservatories for 8 years, in Munich, Berlin and New York City. There my bass teachers were Greg Cohen and Jay Anderson, but I also studied intensely with Kurt Rosenwinkel, John Hollenbeck and Phil Markowitz. On the upright bass I also have a strong classical background, having studied with Wies de Boeve, who just joined the Bavarian Radio Orchestra in Munich.

About Tom

My name is Tom. I am a professional jazz musician based in Brooklyn, and I hold two degrees in jazz performance: a Bachelor of Arts from the Jazz Institute Berlin and a Master of Music from Manhattan School of Music New York.

I have been playing both double bass and electric bass for 12 years and have been teaching privately since 2012.

My hours are flexible, and I am always willing to negotiate on rates. Also, I offer the first lesson at no charge to the students, so you can see if you'd want to continue to work with me.
