Janet B. Indianapolis, IN

I've been teaching both piano and voice for almost 40 years. I taught elementary vocal/general/choral music in our local public school system for 32 years. I added teaching privately about 10 years later. I work with students ages 3 and up for piano, and ages 8 and up for voice. I welcome students of all levels of experience from the earliest beginner to the most advanced. The lessons are largely focused on technique, theory, and developing skills, and can be adapted to incorporate each students goals. I encourage my students to perform in various talent shows, and other avenues as they become available. We have a Recital every May, and all students are guided through the development of their selected music to take it from the beginning stages to having it ready to perform.

I have taught students of all ability levels, from the most basic beginner to very advanced performers. I welcome you to come to my home studio. I have both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Arts degree in Music from the University of Indianapolis. I retired in 2009 from teaching in the Indianapolis area public schools after 32 years of teaching elementary vocal/general/choral music.

Knowledgeable, Encouraging, Experienced

I came to her studio with no singing experience whatsoever. I was a little nervous to start singing in front of people, especially since I thought my voice had dried up for lack of use. But I felt totally comfortable from the very first lesson and I soon looked forward to singing every week!

After only a few short weeks with her guidance I have increased my range by a perfect fourth up and a major second down! My vocal control has greatly improved and now I KNOW I can sing confidently. Definitely recommend this instructor.

Don grew up in Indianapolis, and began his musical interest in church as a 9 year old. "Most everyone sang the melody during the song service, and I wanted to be different. From there he became involved in band and choir in high school and went on to major in music at Tennessee Temple College in Chattanooga. Later he earned a master's degree in music from Butler University, and studied voice and choral conducting at Pensacola Christian College for 2 summers.

Teaching Philosophy

From the amateur and recreational singer to the professional vocalist, my teaching is designed to help singers develop a sustainable vocal technique that is grounded in solid scientific knowledge as it pertains to the anatomy and physiology of the breathing and phonatory mechanisms, as well as the acoustical laws of the singing voice. With all students, I strive to offer an environment of excellence in which the healthiest development of the vocal artist can be achieved. I see that each student be nurtured as an individual and patiently given the opportunity to attain a firm understanding of vocal pedagogy, lyric diction, song literature, performance practices, stage deportment, and all other aspects that help develop an expressive and sensitive artist. More importantly, I aim to provide all of my students with information that will help them teach themselves.

The nature of the human voice is affected by every aspect of who we are—our physical, emotional, ...

I assign music based on level, ability, technical challenges, and the students likes. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!
