Emily F. Laurel, MD

I have my bachelors in Music Education and I would love to help anyone preparing for college or just interested in music theory learn the intricacies involved in writing and reading music.

About Emily

Hello all! I am Emily F., a recent graduate of Grove City College with a degree in Music Education. While in school I majored in Percussion and Voice and spent the majority of my time performing and gaining experience. I am currently an elementary music teacher with Prince George's County Schools. I have had years of lessons myself and have taught many students as well. As a vocalist, I can teach you how to sing anything from Top 40 hits to Broadway numbers to Operatic Arias. I will help you gain confidence as a performer and vocal strength. I am also prepared to teach beginning piano lessons to help you learn to accompany yourself and others. For percussion lessons, I have years of experience as a principal percussionist in my College's band and orchestra and would love to help ...

I started taking marimba lessons from Emily several months, but due to various work related and health issues, I've had to frequently change my schedule with her. I have appreciated her flexibility in working with me and has always responded in a timely manner. She has shown great patience and is a good teacher. She loves what she's doing and that is a great asset in teaching. Most of all, she is a very nice person.

I have been taking piano lessons with Emily for almost a year, and have had a very good experience. Her teaching style is "laid back" and patient, but she does emphasize accuracy in technique. (This was a factor I was looking for in a piano teacher.) I took lessons as a child, but had not touched the piano since then. In the past year, I feel I have made significant progress.

Personally, Emily seems to be a dedicated profession (she is also a nice person to work with.) She has consistently responded to e-mails, texts, etc. in a timely manner.

Emily was super helpful. She worked really well with me, even when I was a little nervous. She's such a bubbly and positive person, and I looked forward to every lesson i had with her. She worked with me and all my scheduling issues, and was very understanding. I really enjoyed her teaching style, she was very relaxed and made me feel a lot more comfortable singing. Overall I really thing I've improved over these past few months and I'm looking forward to keeping in touch with Emily!

Excellent

I am an adult learner new to music lessons, and so was very anxious during my first violin session with Raycurt. I can't say enough about his professionalism and easy teaching style. We spoke prior to the meeting, and he told me what I needed to get started. More impressive, he showed up during a snowstorm! I highly recommend him.

Ms.Wilma is awesome! She is patient and knowledgeable in Violin. Her expertise helped to identify that the music store provided our daughter with the wrong size violin. Once that was corrected, her playing got better. Our daughter, 4 years old, loves Ms. Wilma and is very excited for each lesson with her.

Wilma is a wonderful instructor. She is extremely patient and will go over the materials until the student understand and can play the lesson as required. I was able to sit and observe her in the lesson and was able to assist my son when he was practicing. She is always prompt and ready to go when we arrived. We never had to wait she was always prepared. My child is 6 and Wilma was able to get him focused on what he needed to do in class and he was able to replicate the lesson at home.

Music Theory and Music Performance

Ms. Wilma's enthusiasm for life and music shines through in her instrumental playing and teaching style. She shows a strong proficiency in many music genres and can teach different kinds of musical instruments.

She's reliable, experienced, professional, and easy to be around. One of her main strengths is her ability to convey musical thoughts in a way that is meaningful, constructive and easily understood.
I really enjoyed how she have enriched my ability to think about musical concepts, discuss theories in music, and listen to different types of music.

At Oberlin I taught improvisation through musical theory and tutored fellow students in theory. I believe understanding theory can benifit the performance of any style of music

About Ethan

Hello, my name is Ethan. I'm a 2014 graduate of Oberlin College and Conservatory where I studied Jazz Bass.

My main performance experience is in jazz settings--I've performed with jazz artists like Rufus Reid, Gary Bartz, Steve Turre, and Marshall Keys. Additionally, I've received Outstanding Soloist and Outstanding Small Jazz Combo Awards from Downbeat Magazine.
While the majority of my experience is in jazz settings, I've also taught rock, pop, funk, and gospel styles to electric bassists and classical styles to upright bassists. While at Oberlin I taught bluegrass, funk, jazz, arranging, improv, and classical lessons to 18-40 year olds. My teaching approach focuses on performance--it doesn't matter what style the student is interested in.
