I play music full time - anything from touring with bands to studio session work - and love to fill my home life with teaching lessons. I began studying percussion at age 6, and mostly learned jazz and classical until late high school, when I also became interested in American roots music. I dug deep into guitar, mandolin, fiddle and banjo, and loved checking out old recordings to see where the new stuff comes from. In college I was a percussion performance major until switching to English education and teaching high school for 3 years. Since then I've stayed busy with music, but I also teach and perform improv comedy on the side. It's a little more than a hobby and a little less than a career.
I have performed and recorded with groups as diverse as MIT's Balinese Gamelan and Ensemble Robot, old time stringband Stoop Singers, cellist Ben Sollee, jazz trio Gryn Gryn, and artists like Evan Ziporyn (Steve Reich), Sara and Sean Watkins (Nickel Creek), Sean Carey (Bon Iver), and Dean Granros (Happy Apple, Lee Konitz). I've learned traditional fiddle and banjo in the homes of masters Lee Sexton and Clyde Davenport, taught courses in West African drumming and American roots music through the Exploration School at Yale University, and I'm a former member of the Eau Claire Music School faculty. Currently I tour with Field Report, Kalispell, and The Ericksons, playing drums, guitar, fiddle, banjo, and singing.

Howdy! I've been playing a stringed-instrument of one sort-or-another since the wee age of 6 and in a variety of contexts, from full orchestras to rock bands to world-class recording studios. I've composed original music for theatrical productions and mastered classical pieces for solo violin performance. I learned my instruments through a combination of private instruction, self-education, and years of real-world experience.
My first instrument was violin, which I started playing in fourth grade; I started private violin lessons in sixth, and continued with the same teacher until I was 20. At age 16 I started playing guitar and electric bass, and shortly thereafter picked up mandolin, ukulele. . . basically whatever stringed instrument was needed in whatever band or ensemble I happened to be playing with at the time. I've found I have an affinity for quickly learning any stringed instrument, a skill for which I owe credit to my years of private instruction on violin.
In addition to musical instruction, I offer audition monologue coaching for aspiring actors. As a former directing student I'm familiar with the Meisner, Strasberg and Atlantic schools, and am well-versed in script analysis and vocal production techniques. In addition to directing my own productions, I've performed in dozens, both at school and around NYC. I received my BFA in Theatre from NYU, and while I my focus was directing, I of course ended up composing original music and designing sound effects and musical cues for many student and professional productions.
I love teaching! I've taught students as young as 4 1/2 and beginners well into their 30s.

My passion is teaching! I could search my whole life, and never find anything I enjoy doing more. You could call it my "calling," for lack of a better term. That's probably why I've been so successful in my career. I've taught students as young as 4 years old, and students who are in retirement.
The success I've had, comes with years of taking private lessons, performing, studying, and always keeping an open mind to new ideas, and relating my experience with all my students.

Nick comes from a family of four generations of music in the GREEK/Balkan repertoire. He graduated from Columbia College of Chicago with a concentration in Music Composition in December of 2009. Currently teaching and performing professionally, Nick enjoys all styles of music, but has been declared as an "old soul" by many of his friends. He enjoys playing lots of Motown, funk, and jazz, but is proficient in Classical, Rock, and Blues as well. When not playing music (rarely), he is a Board member for the GivingBackPack Foundation which provides school supplies to underprivileged children. Nick's dedication to education is shown through his music and his personal volunteer hours, he feels his diverse background gives his students an advantage to a broader perspective of music and theory.

I have a Master of Music (M.M.) from the University of Oregon in Jazz Performance (Guitar), as well as two years of experience in the Berklee College of Music Acoustic String Department (Mandolin performance). I have performed internationally, but have spent my energy for the last few years mainly in developing a highly effective curriculum for folk stringed instruments. Unlike piano and violin, which have hundreds and hundreds of years of history and have been taught effectively all over the world, guitar, mandolin and banjo are relatively new instruments! I have developed a curriculum which uses what I consider to be the best aspects of formal/university music education, without sacrificing the joy of the informal/social method of learning which has been a characteristic of folk education throughout American history! My goal is to help students develop the technical skills they need to play music a very high level, while still maintaining the joy of creativity. After all, music is nothing if not first and foremost a social activity!
