The saxophone can be one of the funnest instruments to play, no questions asked! In order to reach that point it's important to have certain things in order such as: sound production, breath support, musicality, and technique. In lessons use a variety of exercises and method/etude books, playing duets together, as well as listening and ear training to give my students a well rounded approach to the saxophone and music helping them to become the best musician they can be.

Bill is a fantastic teacher. I am currently a professional actor/saxophonist, and I was looking to broaden my horizons by picking up the clarinet. Right from the beginning of our instruction, Bill struck a perfect balance: on the one hand, he pushed me to gain proficiency quickly, knowing that I was eager to begin playing at a professional level; and on the other hand, he focused on methodically and meticulously building a solid foundation of strong technique.

In addition, Bill was enormously helpful when it came to selecting the right equipment. He was accessible, knowledgeable, and even perused some available clarinets to help me find the ideal instrument for my goals and skill level.

I could not recommend Bill highly enough. He will tailor your instruction to your skill level, will be supportive and encouraging, and will give you both the tools and the motivation to reach your highest potential.

Bill is a very talented, professional, reliable and kind teacher. He has been working with my son for almost a year now and we can definitely see the difference. My son is always eager to practice and learn when Bill comes over for the lesson. Since starting working with Bill, my son has surpassed all the kids in his junior high school's band group. This is particularly important and extremely helpful for when he auditions for a scholarship at the catholic high school that we are considering.

Awesome Sax Teacher

Bill is a great teacher. Teaching an adult to learn an instrument for the first time is not an easy task. Bill has tons of patience even when I don't find the time in my busy schedule to practice. He mixes class time with both practice and theory, and it is always interesting and challenging. He isa super cool guy who invites me to go watch him play. I haven't had a chance yet but am looking forward to seeing him rock out. I have already recommended him to a few friends of mine.

I've been playing sax for 16 years now with a focus on blues and rock. My strength is TONE! Getting a strong sound so the world can hear your music! I play tenor mainly but also play alto and soprano.

About Jefrey

I am a working musician here in Brooklyn, New York. I started playing guitar the day before high school, my mother taught me my first chords. That was along time ago. Since then I've been blessed to live a musical life. I've had the good fortune to work with bands such as TV on The Radio as a live and studio musician. Music has allowed me to see the world now and I want to share my gifts with others as much as I can.

My brother and I taught each other how to play. We started playing in bands almost immediately. We really helped each other develop our ears. In a brief period of time we could play with just about any band. To me the best place to learn is on the bandstand, I can help you find your way there. I had a wonderful classical guitar teacher in high school named Bruce ...

I took guitar lessons with Jef a few years ago at his shop. He was always a very patient and attentive teacher. He also asked me a lot of questions about what kind of music I was interested in playing, what aspects of a particular style were interesting to me. There was one very memorable lesson when he had picked out some records he thought would relate to what I was learning and played them for me. We listened and talked about them and then played some more. Jef's teaching was well rounded and very enriching. More than just improving technically, I was encouraged to figure out what aspects of the instrument I related to most, and thereby was able to develop my own sense of style.

Jef is a fantastic music instructor--period! Jef is one of those rare individuals who is an amazing creative artist AND teacher. Learning from Jef is a beautiful experience--he couldn't be more a more genuine and down to earth person and he has a wonderful gift to be able to impart musical skills and concepts to his students in a way that is unique and individual to each of his pupils. I've had the privilege of studying with Jef for a number of years and can't recommend him highly enough to anyone interested in pursuing Guitar, Bass Guitar or Saxophone instruction. It doesn't matter what your skill level is, you will learn and grow with this guy. He's a seasoned veteran performing and recording musician in many different styles and he knows how to connect with his students. Like a doctor, he diagnoses each student and situation and prescribes just the right medicine to make things move in the right direction. Look no further people, study music with Jef and you'll be happy you did!!!

My goal as a teacher is to provide an in depth understanding of the instrument to my students. Whether we are learning technique specific to the instrument or general musical concepts, it is important to me that I take the time to insure that my students not only learn how to do something, but also the reasons why we are learning a specific concept or technique. At the end of the day, my ultimate goal is to teach you how to teach yourself, so that you may enjoy playing the instrument outside of our lessons together.

I prefer not to conform to a specific teaching style, because every student is different, and I have been fortunate to have a great variety of types of students throughout my years as a teacher. Some of my students are children and adolescents who are looking to pursue music when they go to college or auditioning for state and regional band programs. Many of my students are very busy adults who are either looking to pick up an instrument for the first time as an ...

I am a student focused teacher who believes that each student learns differently. I focus on the foundations of music theory, as well as healthy practice habits in order to help my students succeed in any musical setting. I can help you get started on an instrument, improve your current abilities, work on school band and orchestra music, prepare for festival and solo auditions, prepare for college auditions, or just find great enjoyment in playing.

I pack a lot into each lesson making sure we address things such as: posture, theory, accuracy of rhythm, note reading, warm-ups, scales, etudes, solos, musicality, composition, interpretation and technique. For saxophone I also address reeds, mouthpieces, embouchure, tonal conception and listening to great players.

Julie is wonderful. She is very intelligent and accomplished but somehow manages to put me at ease. I enjoy the lessons, it isn't work. For someone so young she has acquired amazing people skills, she is a natural born teacher, a great musician, and she loves what she does. Her knowledge of music and teaching will never cease to impress me. She is dedicated and gives you 200%. But she remains very human and easy to feel comfortable with. A consummate professional, with a healthy sense of humor, who is never impatient or insensitive, she is perfect. I highly recommend her to students of all ages and at all levels.

Amazing teacher - Professional - Really knows how to teach

I started flute lessons with Julie when I was in 7th grade. She helped boost my confidence in playing the flute and over time set me in the right direction for the elite high school music program which I am in now. Our lessons were always on time. She would help me work on sight reading and music pieces I was struggling with while correcting some of my bad habits. I was very comfortable asking any question and her teaching style was easy for me to understand and follow. Every week I looked forward to my lesson with her. Over time I was amazed at how much better I was playing. She was very knowledgeable of the audition requirements for music students preparing for more advanced opportunities. She even helped me with the audition piece for the BCMEA festival, (Bucks County Music Educators' Association), which I was selected and performed in.

In summary – Julie is a great teacher. She is very knowledgeable in other instruments, too. She also helped me start to play the piccolo along with my flute lessons. In addition to playing the flute, I now play piccolo in the high school marching band. I will always be grateful for the support and outstanding lessons she provided for me.

Violin
Julie? Yes.

I wanted to start taking the violin seriously, and Julie was certainly the best teacher for that (and still is!). She helped me prepare for my audition for my school's chamber group and although I did not make it that year (being that I had started lessons a couple months before my audition day), I did the next year. Not only that, I made it by a long shot. I was fifth chair, first violin. Even before then I noticed how much I had improved studying with Julie. She not only worked with me on how to efficiently practice and approach the music itself, but taught me proper technique to yield the best sound--for instance, using the ENTIRE bow, an important thing to do... She is patient, her instruction is invaluable, and improvement is guaranteed (given that you also work hard). It is also superfun playing duets with her <3.
Erika F. Jersey City, NJ

I have taught a variety of different levels throughout the years, from beginners to advanced players, in private and group settings.

About Erika

My name is Erika and music has always been an essential part of my life! As soon as the cliche dream of becoming an astronaut was out of my mind, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in music- my dream was to become a professional pit orchestra musician on Broadway. I attended Ithaca College and received my bachelors degree in music education and saxophone performance, where I quickly learned that I enjoyed teaching as much as performing! I loved conducting high school band and teaching private and group instrumental lessons. I was a member of the pit orchestra in several collegiate and professional musical productions, as well as the alto saxophone player of Zephyr Saxophone Quartet. In my free time I enjoy spending time outdoors, playing ping pong, taking pictures and exploring new ...

I learned saxophone for a year back in 2007 and haven't played since. I was looking for someone who can get me started again after such a long gap. Over the past month Erika has been helping me get back and move forward. I find Erika to be knowledgeable, patient and keeps things at a lively pace without stagnation. She also made corrections to my embouchure, breath support and reeds, which seem to be improving my playing. So thanks to Erika. I look forward to continue learning and hope this first hand information helps anyone in search of a good saxophone teacher in and around Jersey City.
