I began playing percussion at the age of 11 because for some reason at the middle school I was attending it was the "cool thing" to do. At 12 years old my father gave me his old Tama swingstar drum set and since then I haven't got off a drum throne. At 13 years I had the opportunity to perform with my middle school concert band at the world famous Carnegie Hall. I continued pursuing my music career in high school by taking private lessons while participating in the high school drumline and jazz band. I am a brass, voice and percussion artist and teacher, local to the Whittier area, specializing in many styles such as Classical, Jazz, and Pop. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Tuba Performance from CSU Sacramento and I am currently pursuing my master's degree in tuba performance at Azusa Pacific University. At APU I am involved in many ensembles including the top jazz band, wind ensemble, graduate quintet, vocal jazz, and am the Assistant director of the Blackout Marching Band (APU). During my time in Sacramento I held the position of Principal Tuba for the Folsom Symphony for the 2009 - 2011 seasons. I was also the lead trombone for the Harley White Jr. Jazz Orchestra as well as Element Brass Band. Hi! My name is Al! I've been playing drums for about 11 years now, I started playing at the age of 12 when my parents bought me my first drum set. Since then drumming has been my life, everything from playing in numerous bands, drum competitions, private teaching, and National US Tours. Leaving my home town of Brownsville, TX behind, I moved out to L.A Summer of 2008 to attend the Los Angeles Music Academy, where I received my Associates Degree in Music Performance. I currently teach private lessons and I gig around town with various artists. I have lots of musical knowledge that Iv'e obtained by studying with LA's Top Drummers. I'd love to pass down my knowledge only to benefit you in your drum learning experience. If you're just a beginner, only want to take lessons for fun, or more advanced. I fell in love with the drums when I was 2 years old but I had to wait until I turned 7 to get my first drum set. And ever since then I have never put my sticks down. I love playing the drums and I love music! I've been in Orchestras and Symphonies. I've been in Rock bands, Jazz bands and Marching bands. I've played in groups as small as 2 and as large as 200! Music has allowed me to travel to lots of places and to meet lots of people. I even got to write music for films and cartoons & record with other great musicians! Music has been an amazing gift to me...

And now I want to share that gift with as many new people as I possibly can. I love teaching just as much as I love playing. I still get to travel and I always get to meet new and interesting people. But the best part is that I get to share music with anyone who wants to learn it & we get to play and listen to great music every day.

I have been a student of the drums myself for 17 years. I started like many musicians have, learning to play a musical instrument in the school orchestra. I picked up some drum sticks and haven't put them down since. My favorite styles of music are funk and rock. I have studied orchestral drumming, drumset, and music theory for 2 years at the university level. I love to teach and finding ways of making drumming easy to understand. I currently play with 2 bands and record whenever an opportunity arises.

Since graduating from the Percussion Institute of Technology (PIT) in 1989 I have given over 12,000 private lessons to students of all ages!! I have recorded several albums, toured around the globe and taught at drumming events across the country.

I teach all styles of contemporary drum set and marching snare drum.

In 2010, I was named "Educator of the Year" by the drumming web site "United Groove Workers".

I am experienced with special needs students (autism, down syndrome) and children as young as 4 years old.

I have been a drummer for 25 years. I have been playing, writing and teaching percussion professionally for 15 years now. I attended Valencia high school in Placentia, California and was immediately hired to teach drums there after graduating. I have also attended the Los Angeles Music Academy, studying under drum legends Ralph Humphrey and Joe Porcaro.
