About Me

I am a violinist, composer, and general music nerd who would love to share my nerdiness with others! I compose and produce music for film and video games and have been playing violin since I was 9 years old.

Brandon R. Hoffman Estates, IL

Subjects Taught

Banjo, Classical Guitar, Fiddle, Guitar, Music Performance, Music Theory, Piano, Violin

About Me

I am a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist with a dual-degree in Music Theory & Composition and Philosophy from Butler University in Indianapolis. I have 10 years of teaching experience and over 13 years of performance experience. I am classically trained, but have since branched out to genres such as Jazz, Bluegrass, Rock, Electronic Music, and anything in between.

*** Lesson Details ***
I will design lessons around your interests, goals, and needs. These can include full pieces, exercises, scales and arpeggios, worksheets, compositions, or improvisations (depending on your area of study.) If students are interested, I would even like to hold studio wide recitals once or twice a year to give your family and friends a chance to see your progress.

*** Specialties ***
I studied Suzuki violin, but later switched to a traditional style. I have over 10 years of experience in classical music (violin, guitar, piano) and have since branched out to explore other genres: jazz, bluegrass, folk, rock, pop, etc.

I place a strong emphasis on Music Theory, Scales, and Rhythmic accuracy, since these are the building blocks of all music and can be applied across genres.

Most importantly, I make sure that my students have FUN in their lessons. I want to make sure my students look forward to their lessons each week--hopefully you will even be excited to practice.

Tracy B. Berwyn, IL

Subjects Taught

Cello, Fiddle, Flute, Guitar, Music Theory, Piano, Spanish, Viola, Violin

About Me

I have been teaching individual and group lessons for 12+ years. Many of my students have won trophies at the Granquist music competition and also play in local youth orchestras. My own youth string ensemble plays publicly at many popular local venues several times a year. I enjoy exposing my students to the finer points of being a professional musician such as the camaraderie, team work, creativity (creating harmonies, tailoring arrangements to fit student’s level) and of course, stage presence. I am very proud of my students. It is so gratifying to see their confidence build with each new skill they master.

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to teaching is to combine fundamentals with “adventure.” I encourage students to experiment with their instrument and have quite a few budding composers. No two students learn in the same way, so I don’t use the same strategy for each individual. I believe music should be fun and rewarding. I like to expose students to many different types of music, i.e.; jazz, pop, blues, folk and of course, classical. Students are more likely to practice music that speaks to their personality.

My teaching environment is very laid back. I expect my students to practice, but I don’t read them the riot act if they show up to a lesson not having practiced much the week before. I encourage them to practice more the next week and I give them strategies for how to fit practice time into their schedule along with the most efficient way to practice their pieces.

I encourage parents to sit in on their child’s lesson, but I don’t require it. The more a parent is informed about their child’s goals, the better they are able to assist, support and facilitate the student’s practice. Involved parents contribute greatly to a child’s success.

I love teaching adults too! It is never too late to learn an instrument and the rewards carry over into all aspects of life. As with children, music makes us all smarter. Research proves this. We learn complicated spacial and math skills without even realizing it; we’re having too much fun!

I have annual recitals for private students. I speak Spanish.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Basement studio finished and separate from house

*** Travel Equipment ***
Sometimes music. I can refer students to instrument rental or purchase places, but do not have instruments to provide. I can obtain music for the students if they prefer, otherwise I will tell them what and where to buy.

*** Specialties ***
I use Suzuki and other books for material, but my teaching is more traditional. I use actual bowhold from start. My own invention - pinky AND thumb houses. Music reading is introduced fairly early. A little at a time and it's painless.

About Me

I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis.
I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University of Nottingham.
I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I strongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc....
The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

About Me

Hello,
My name is David S. and I am 22 years old. Thank you for visiting my profile! I am originally from Aurora, IL but currently live in Chicago in the Buena Park area. I am a recent graduate of DePaul University where I received my Bachelor's degree in Cello Performance. There I studied with Stephen Balderston, former assistant principal of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

I began my piano studies* in a Yamaha Piano studio at age five and continued private lessons for eight years. Then I shifted my attention to the cello, which I started in a public school when I was in fourth grade. I began my violin and viola studies in high school during a period I broke my wrist and couldn't hold my cello with a cast!

*I attribute my versatility as a string player to my many years of piano training.

I was recently awarded a full time position with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the rest of my time is devoted to my students and freelance work around the city.

My experience as a teacher is extensive. I have been teaching since I was in eighth grade, which was almost ten years ago! Please see my teaching experience below.

I am NOT certified in the Suzuki method and I have no future plans to do so. I respect the ideals of the Suzuki method, but I cannot relate as I was trained at a much later age and with different books and methods. However, I concentrated on Pedagogy at DePaul, where I took numerous classes to prepare me for working with students of all ages and levels. Please see “certification.”

On the side, I am also a fiddle player with the Century Air Minstrels, a folk music group specializing in Civic War Music.

About Me

Hello! I am 20 years old and have been playing the violin since age 4. I'm currently majoring in Violin Performance at DePaul University. In addition to studying classical in my formative years, I also took lessons in old time fiddle. I have most of my experience teaching students who already understand the very basics of music reading, however, I have also successfully taught this skill. I prefer to teach at DePaul or in other public spaces such as schools, churches, or community centers (for safety reasons), but I'm open to other location suggestions and can move students to my home studio after our first meeting.
