About Me

Hello everyone! I've been singing since the age of 3 and performing since the age of 6. I am not only an experienced music teacher with a passion for music and teaching, but an experienced performer, and songwriter. I started performing at a young age with the Columbia School of Theatrical Arts, and as I grew older I studied different techniques such as speech level singing, classical, and even techniques from Brett Manning, one of the most amazing vocal coaches today who teaches artists such as Haley Williams from Paramore. I have experience performing many styles of music, and also was a voice major in college. The students I teach will benefit from my contemporary techniques, and can learn to sing in almost any style of music they choose.

*** Lesson Details ***
Do you want to learn how to sing your favorite song just like the artist? I can teach you the techniques! Or how about how to make a cover song your own based off of your own unique voice? We can work together to find, develop, and build the amazing qualities that you have in your voice. I will not only work on aspects of what you would like to improve on with your voice personally, but I will make an individual plan for you that will dramatically improve your voice! I will work with you individually to strengthen any weakness you may have in a fun environment. I am fun, encouraging and motivating! When asking students to do any vocal exercises, I will explain what the certain exercise does to improve your voice so that you can have the knowledge you need to be a good vocalist, and not just know how to sing properly. You will learn many things in lessons and what I teach you will vary on where you are vocally.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide a keyboard, CD, Boom box, music sheets, etc. Students do not need to provide anything.

*** Specialties ***
Speech level singing method, classical techniques, singing success, various genres including: pop, blues, contemporary, and musical theatre. I utilize the different techniques I have learned through proper classical training, but mix it with contemporary methods I have learned from speech level singing methods.

Opera Voice, Singing

About Me

If you have ever wanted to really learn how to sing correctly, I can help you. I have personally taken voice lessons twice a week for well over 15 plus years from a master voice/opera singer who was trained by some of the best voice instructors in the Greater New York City area and also in Europe. In addition she was associated with the New York Metropolitan Opera. I enjoy working with each of my many students to exceed their initial vocal goals. Many of my students are professional singers, church choir members, actors, musicians, and I even train a Hollywood producer's Arizona clients!

I have taken graduate level courses at Arizona State University in Speech and Hearing Sciences. I've worked in the Radiology Department of a major hospital for over 10 years, seven years as supervisor. I have gained a very in-depth knowledge of the anatomical/physiological aspects of the human voice and body. My in-depth knowledge can help free your tired, sore, and/or hoarse "instrument".

I love to work with anyone truly interested in expanding their vocal horizons. I enjoy making people laugh and help them develop their vocal aspirations into reality. My credo is singing must come from within the heart and soul of every artist. If we are too serious about so much of the technical stuff, our art will suffer and singing becomes more of a job then a passion. It must remain a passion within us to truly touch us and others.

My vocal training background is Bel Canto, the Italian School of Singing. In addition to Bel Canto, I was also cross trained in the German School of singing by the SAME instructor. This is very unusual since most singers which train Bel Canto do not generally cross over to German, due to language/vocal placement issues. The Great Pavarotti never sung German due to this very issue. The two schools of singing blend perfectly together when those schools are properly introduced and integrated during the voice lessons. The results are solid, progressive vocal growth and unbelievable beauty of tone which can be astonishing. This is what truly separates a singer with an unbelievable instrument from that of a "vocal orator".

Please be assured that I DO NOT ever force any of my students to sing opera. So if you are interested in just learning how to sing to the best of your ability, I can certainly help you.

A good majority of my voice students are professional performers and some are people just interested in developing their voice for their own personal fulfillment. I currently have a student who is a family physician and another is a musical composer of a well known pop song. One of my students recently sang on stage with the great Andrea' Bocelli and now he is scheduled to sing at Carnagie Hall in New York. I work hard in shedding the light of vocal knowledge to all my students. My in-depth knowledge base is there for anyone who wishes to train with me. I NEVER frown upon training individuals who have not had any prior vocal training. I am delighted to work with everyone who sincerely wishes to learn the great art of singing.

*** Lesson Details ***
I spend a good 35 minutes on vocal exercises to help strengthen and expanded the vocal range. I then move on to vocal musicianship and songs. Some of the songs I select for specific technical instruction. The student is always welcome to select his/her own music as well. I use specific songs as benchmarks to track vocal growth. I make sure my students are always cognizant of proper diaphragmatic/abdominal breath support coupled with a freed throat. I am a product of the WELL GUARDED secrets of the "Bel Canto" school of singing. It is through the Bel Canto school of singing that some of the world's greatest voices developed over the centuries. Often times my students find themselves surpassing their initial expectations! High notes are never an issue because the voice is freed to produce them. Vocal projection is almost never an issue because breath and voice are fused into one. The ability to sing softly is the result of a well freed up throat. When the throat is freed everything begins to develop beautifully. Each lesson brings forth incremental vocal growth.

I carefully work one on one with each of my students making sure that their throat and oral positioning are correct. The throat should never feel tired or tight during or after a voice lesson. My students repeatedly tell me that that notice steady vocal growth during and after each voice lesson. This makes it very exciting for both the student and me. This feeds the fire of passion to learn and grow!

About Me

Open up to your own unique voice. Play piano with energy and freedom.

"With singing, your body is your instrument. Helping you become all you can be as a performer is my number one goal. Protecting your voice is a close second as we work to strengthen your vocal range and the quality of your sound. As well, piano students will learn techniques that will speed up their comprehension of sight reading and/or improvisation. Teaching gives me an opportunity to energize my students and share with them historically proven techniques - as well as new ways of practicing and performing." - Marty

Originally from Boulder, Colorado, Marty moved to the Phoenix, AZ area eight years ago. Marty has over 20 years of performing and teaching experience. She studied for three years at the School of Music, University of Colorado, Boulder. She has studied in the Masters program in vocal pedagogy and has performed in a variety of venues from blues to opera.

You will find her pedagogy technique to be respectful of the masters that have come before her. She is also open to new techniques from belting (in popular music), to microphone usage skills. As a student, you will be invited to perform in student recitals. You will be joining a team of dedicated, passionate performers who know the pleasure of performing.

As a beginning and intermediate piano instructor, Marty will guide you in the basics of sight reading. If you prefer, your piano classes will consist primarily of improvisation and chord progressions (you will also learn a little bit of sight reading which will help you 'flesh out' the melody). You will gain a solid foundation in music theory as well as an introduction into the vast world of music history. All age ranges are welcome, from the beginning elementary student, to the retiree just now finding the time to pursue their passion to perform.

I have authored a variety of music theory articles to assist you with your progress. We use these in the lessons to speed up your assimilation of the material. You will receive support via this literature and will quickly recognize how music theory supports your efforts with either singing or playing the piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
Your voice is unique to you. How you currently sing and what you want to sing will be the foundation from which we work. We will explore your voice and strengthen it via breath and physical exercises and practice with a repertoire that suits your individual tastes. We will also prepare your mind for quick and fluid articulation of your musical sensitivities.

Music theory and various musical explorations will assist you in moving forward in the most rapid manner possible. Whether you are twelve years old or sixty-five, you will find fun as well as perceptive methods for strengthening your passion for musical performance.

Since your body is your instrument, I am very conscious of the need to assist you in waking your body up in order to perform most successfully. The warm-up exercises include not only traditional vocalises, but also methods for stretching your body and strengthening your diaphragmatic breathing. My students become very aware of any residual tension in their bodies. Singing is a wonderful way to get in touch with - and expel - any way in which you might 'close down' or 'tense down' your physical body. By working with a caring professional, you will learn how to freely share your unique talent with the world.

As we progress through the series of classes, you will use breathing exercises to activate the thoracic (throat & chest) and visceral (stomach) cavities. Your lessons will continue into specific vocalization exercises; such as singing scales, triads and specific exercises to assist you with fluid musical expression. Traditional ear training will also be a part of the lessons for intermediate students.

Many of the lessons I teach include a theme of working on confidence, vocal projection, breath support, finding and releasing tension, vocal range expansion, audition preparation and stage performance. All singing includes a core of story-telling. You will be encouraged to 'deconstruct' a song and discover the story, along with the emotions that are found in the lyrics of the songs you will sing.

______________________

In a similar fashion, my piano students will work on exercises to establish kinesthetic learning or muscle-memory. I have a unique method for sharing chord-progressions and piano improvisation. You will learn to quickly share music in a satisfying and pleasing manner that will surprise you and the people who hear your music. From your unique 'ear,' and via your new-found understanding of music theory, music will pour out of your piano.

As a piano student, you will also be exposed to lessons of the masters who have taught for hundreds of years. Sight-reading at the piano is a very enjoyable skill. It is also a foundation from which we will work (while taking in mind your particular interests). Again, whether a pre-teen or a senior citizen (or anyone in between!) who has finally found the time to explore their musical talent - you will find classes uniquely suited to your musical trajectory.

Your lessons will proceed as you acquire the ability to successfully perform your exercises and musical literature. Playing the piano fluidly and sharing your abilities with others is an amazing experience! It is my intent to ensure that your progress is swift, enjoyable and based on the work of the masters who have come before us! See you soon... Cordially, Marty W.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, metronome, microphone and amp. I can provide supplemental piano music; in some cases, students will need to purchase their own music. I also have an area where parents can wait for lessons to end. We also have a market or restaurant close-by as well.

*** Travel Equipment ***
When traveling to student's homes - they need to have a piano. In some cases, students also need to buy their own voice or piano books. In the event that a vocal student prefers in-home lessons and does not have a piano, I can bring an electric piano to the lessons (let's talk!).

About Me

I have 30 years of teaching experience and have enjoyed a successful singing, teaching and conducting career in the US and Australia. I have excellent piano skills and can sight-read and play most piano accompaniments for my voice students. No two students are alike so I teach everyone according to their needs and their learning style. I have an exceptional understanding of the voice and communicate using tangible imagery to produce excellent results. I work with all levels of singers from beginners to career level in Broadway, Pop and Classical styles. Beyond university training, I have had training from teachers and coaches from the Metropolitan Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Arizona Opera and many others.
With piano, again, technique is important but lessons must be FUN! I like using innovative ideas and materials so that learning is exciting.

Practice is important for progress so the more you practice the faster you progress.

Because there is always more to learn, I continue to study and attend master-classes and workshops so I can be the best teacher I can be.

*** Lesson Details ***
I always want my students to leave their lessons knowing that they are better at the end of the lesson than they were at the beginning. Lessons are all about skill-building, so fundamentals of technique, theory and repertoire are included elements. I'm pretty laid back but know that practice is essential to progress. To that end, I always want my students to understand how to practice, not just what to practice. Practice doesn't make perfect, it makes permanent! My goal as a teacher is not just to help you achieve your goals, but to give you the ability to build on your own skills by knowing the how and the why, not just the what.

Opera Voice, Piano, Singing

About Me

I started studying piano and singing from a very young age. I used to make my friends come over and watch me perform (karaoke style--before karaoke was big) when i was in the 4th grade. My greatest love is music, performing music, and sharing it with others. As a singer i have studied all types of music, but my favorite- and what i excel at- is opera.

I have taken private voice and piano lessons constantly since the age of 5, and have studied opera performance and music theory in college. I perform locally around the community as a singer, direct the church choir, and occasionally accompany soloists on the piano. I have taught private lessons in voice and piano for 5 years and i greatly enjoy the one on one experience of teaching private lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
I want my students to enjoy the time they spend with me. I believe in a very relaxed, comfortable environment, where students feel they can express themselves, but it is still an environment where time is maximized. In piano, 10-15 min is devoted to theory, scales, and chords, then we work on songs, some of my choosing and some of the students choosing. In voice we spend about 10-15 minutes on warm-ups and the rest of the time is devoted to songs. Again, there are songs that i choose for the students according to the needs of their voice and development, but i also allow the student to bring things he/she wants to learn for fun.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a sound system and microphone. i have my iPod hooked up to the sound system to play karaoke music.

*** Specialties ***
*Teachers marked as a Student Favorite have taught a minimum of 25 lessons and have received the highest feedback rating from students.voice, opera voice, piano
In piano I am partial to the John Thompson method. I also spend a portion of each lesson on scales and music theory.
In voice, I specialize in bel canto. The most beautiful sounds come when you are not straining the voice. I work on getting it out of the throat and into the mask.

**i do not recommend every other week lessons. take lessons does offer them, but i have not seen many students thrive or progress with that much time in between lessons. i do have a couple students on an every other week schedule that have been with me for awhile. if you are determined to try, i can offer saturday at 1:30 or 2:00.
