Students can start from the very beginning or come in to improve technique, sound, skills, ear training, intonation, and reading music. Students work on scales, exercises for tone and coordination, vibrato, solos, audition music, and orchestral music. I can recommend many youth orchestras in the area. Some of my students work on auditions and music for All Southern Youth Orchestra and All State Youth Orchestras. I go at the student's pace and also start out many beginners. Students learn to sight read and practice rhythm exercises to prepare for orchestra auditions and playing with other musicians.

Music helps students develop more areas of their brains and increases the capacity for better memory and problem solving. EDUCATION My musical education began while sitting on my mother's lap as she taught piano lessons. I began studying cello with a member of the Kansas City Philharmonic at age 9, and at age ten, I followed in my mother's footsteps to play the flute. I played all three instruments, (piano, cello and flute) until high school when it was became clear to me that I wanted to be an orchestra teacher. With this dream in mind, I began playing the violin as well. I graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor's in Music Education in 1989 and again in 1999 with a Master's degree. Marta Sofia H. is an active performer and teacher of viola and violin in Los Angeles. Born and raised in Madison, WI, Marta left her hometown early to finish high school at the acclaimed Interlochen Arts Academy where she studied both violin and viola. Graduating with a focus on viola, she moved to Chicago to receive a B.M. from DePaul University, studying under Rami Solomonow (Lyric Opera) and various Chicago Symphony Orchestra musicians. An avid teacher as well as a performer, Marta has enhanced her pedagogy training by taking Suzuki Method coursework at the American Suzuki Institute, DePaul Community Music Division and with teachers at the Colburn School.
