Liza M. New York, NY

Acting, Broadway Singing, Film Acting, Film and TV Acting, Improv Acting, Jazz Voice, Musical Theater, Music Performance, Shakespearean Acting, Singing, Speaking Voice, Stage Performance, Theater Acting, Vocal Training

About Me

I have been professionally singing and taking voice lessons since the age of 9! I went through various styles in my love and performance of music, starting with the Beatles, Aretha Franklin and all of Motown, Jazz (Ella Fitzgerald), R&B, and Classical/Opera (starting when I was in high school and attending Interlochen Arts Camp)...

Having received a Bachelor's of Music in Voice (Music Theatre Performance) from NYU, I stayed in NYC after graduation performing in musical theatre and theatre, mostly in the city.

In 2009, I decided to apply to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, with the intent to broaden my range of skill and opportunity as a performer, but also with the intention to teach, with the higher degree strengthening this possibility. I began to teach voice lessons to fellow students while at LAMDA. When I returned to NYC, I began to build my own voice studio in of post-graduate students and adults looking to further develop their vocal practice or begin a vocal practice. I found that in my vocal lessons, I was using physical exercises as for the actor, to incorporate in my private teaching method. I believe in doing, not only watching and observing. This, in conjunction with movement and full-body execution, opens the student vocally and emotionally. I chose to go to LAMDA because the classical training and approach to theatre training in England is extremely physical. They work from the outside in, and I find that the language of the body is universal to students of any intellectual capacity, and I strive to bring this into my approach in any type of teaching format!

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach voice lessons to adults and young students who are beginning their vocal training practice, as well as those who are accomplished singers and performers and want to take their singing and performance to the next level! I use my skills as an accomplished vocalist and teacher to empower my students to find their own voice and learn to express a story through song. I enable my students to hone their craft and find their own style of expression through the exploration of music in a multitude of genres and cultures.

Michael G. Brooklyn, NY

Subjects Taught

Broadway Singing, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Piano, Singing

About Me

Michael is a rising star in contemporary and jazz vocal music. His rich tones and subtle phrasing of jazz standards, pop ballads and multiple voice arrangements have already earned him top honors (including three Downbeat Awards) and a loyal following of listeners. As both a performer and a teacher, Michael enjoys collaborating with all levels of musicians (especially first-timers) and strives to help every student grow in musicianship and love of their craft!
At an early age, Michael felt a powerful attraction to jazz music and was soon studying at Seattle's Roosevelt High School, one of the top jazz schools in the country. His musicianship and fresh interpretations of standards like "I'm Beginning to See The Light" and "Body and Soul" won him the "Best Male Vocalist" award at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival two years in a row; in 2008, he was just one of four male vocalists in the country to be selected to perform in the exclusive Gibson/Baldwin Grammy Vocal Jazz Ensemble, where he was a featured Vocalist and Vocal Percussionist, performing at the 2007 Grammy Award Show and in some of L.A.'s top venues.
In 2009, Michael turned his attention to Big Band music, touring the USA and Canada as the Lead Male Vocalist with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, delighting audiences with his elegant interpretations of classics like "White Cliffs of Dover" and "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square."
As a scholarship student at the University of Miami's prestigious Frost School of Music, Michael had the opportunity in 2010 to work with legendary procure, Phil Ramone (Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, John Legend) when cast as a young Sinatra in his new musical "Lanza." He graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Studio Music and Jazz Voice. Michael is currently based out of New York City where he performs both as a soloist and in various groups including Choral Chameleon and Trouble & Bass.

*** Lesson Details ***
It is my goal as a teacher to provide an extremely comfortable and positive environment. As a performer, I know the joy and release that comes with using your voice, a part of your body, as your instrument. Singing is fun! I know from first hand experience that lessons with a new instructor can be daunting so I make sure to keep a very fun and light vibe going.
Every student is different, and after an introductory conversation I will craft a personalized lesson plan to suit your needs and goals. Are you a beginner who is just finding their voice? Have you performed here and there but really want to hone in on your instrument? Maybe you're an adult and have an audition coming up, or maybe you're only 5 years old and just want to explore the world of music! The diversity of people all united by a love of music is really amazing for me and something I look forward to every day!

Bridget H. New York, NY

Subjects Taught

Broadway Singing, Music Performance, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Singing, Speaking Voice

About Me

I have been a professional voice, music theory and piano teacher for the last ten years, and have loved every minute of it. I am originally from Canada, and went to the University of Windsor to study vocal performance. I was given an opportunity to the study principals of classical singing and musical theater. From there, I began to work as a featured classical soloist and choral singer throughout Canada. I came to New York to continue my studies, and earned a Master of Music degree in Classical Voice from the Manhattan School of Music.

I believe that singing lessons should be a lot of fun. With good technique, my students and I can team up to accomplish anything from singing classical songs and even some opera arias to popular songs and musical theater. It is my goal to help you discover your own personal voice, and build confidence in your individual gifts. My students have gone on to study voice in college and university, perform in musical theater, sing in rock bands, children and adult choirs and even win a competition or two. I love hearing my students perform, and feel that an opportunity to sing in front of others builds confidence and ability. I take pride in arranging recitals for my students who would like this opportunity.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons with always begin with warm ups and technique. We'll also focus on an important principal topic, such as breath and support, vowel placement or expression. We'll use some exercises that I have already, or perhaps a new one just for your needs (once I get to know your voice) to help you achieve our goals. We'll then work on 1-2 songs. You'll probably have picked one, and I may have picked one. The concept that we worked on in our technique session will be applied directly to the songs you are working on. You can learn so many different things in each song, we may practice your songs, using a different goal in several different lessons.
All of my students get a chance to perform in occasional "vocal class" settings, where you can sing your favorite songs for one another, in a fun, laid back environment. All students are welcome to participate in an annual recital for their family and friends too! Piano lessons are designed to suit your needs. We can work on the basics for classical playing, read chords, jazz improv and more.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have my own music studio set up in my apartment. On teaching days, my living room can be a comfortable waiting room for parents/guardians. You are all most welcome to relax, have a cup of tea or coffee and listen to our lessons. I do ask that you do not sit inside the studio (at least not after the first lesson) as this can be distracting for your child. My studio is equipped with a music stand, upright piano, work sheets for theory, pencils and crayons. I also have a full Broadway and classical music library that students can borrow from, CD/DVD's that can be borrowed, and a New Grove Reference set.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring some music, until we assess the student's needs, then they may buy some books, while I provide the rest. I bring theory worksheets, stickers, pencils etc. If a student would like to sing/play a particular song (Broadway/pop etc) I may have it in my music library. If I do not, the student will need to purchase the music they would like to sing. The student would need a keyboard/piano in their home should I travel. I have a piano in my home.

*** Specialties ***
Classical singing, Musical Theater, Jazz, music for young children, , pop singing, audition preparation, beginning music for adults

As for advanced teaching, my teaching style helps students to open their minds so they can enjoy themselves through music. I enjoy teaching my students helpful ways to think about music, as opposed to just teaching them to execute the right notes. For example I might say "play the piano like you sing, and sing as if you are telling a story!" This is an important part of my teaching philosophy.

I have students auditioned for America's Got Talent, the Disney Channel and the Met Opera Children Chorus
