About Perry

Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma to a music-loving family, I began playing piano and guitar at a very young age. At age twelve, I began playing double bass, which has become my primary instrument. Throughout middle and high school, I received numerous awards for excellence in both jazz and classical music. After high school, I moved to the Oklahoma City area and had the opportunity to play with many of the great musicians who passed through, including Jon Faddis, Wynton Marsalis, Byron Stripling, and Anne Hampton Calloway. Since moving to New York City, I have been fortunate enough to travel throughout the US, Canada, Caribbean, and Europe with such groups as Pete Robbins and Centric, Ryan Blotnick's Secret Mainstream, and The Paislies. Aside from my freelance work with various groups, I also ...

Perry is a great teacher. I had fun and learned a lot. I was only with him a short time because of my schedule. However, when my schedule changes and I can go back to my mandolin I would want to continue with Perry.

About John

Hello, Thanks so much for taking the time to inquire about studying music with me. Music and studying music has always been a passionate experience for me. I have been so blessed with the teachers and fellow musicians in my life. You should realize that your study of music may start with me, but it will last your entire lifetime. I hope that all of your life you will have a rewarding relationship to music and the spirit of great sounds! I have performed in great jazz clubs in New York, on Broadway, and performing arts centers across the country. I'm currently playing in many great performing ensembles. I have put out two CD's as a leader and played on multiple CD's for other artists. It has been my pleasure to teach privately, as well as in the classroom for 15 years. I ...

Love my lessons

John is an amazing teacher all around. Very professional and good at getting me to understand things which may be a bit confusing. I am currently reading and playing between four books and I never thought it would be possible especially just after taking lessons for a year. Sometimes I feel a bit frustraited when I am not able to play certain pieces or when I dont understand a concept but John is great at breaking everything down and making it easier. I am now realizing how my piano skills can be utilizied in my other music projects. When I attend my lessons I am reminded why I love having them so much. With him as my instructor I can see my skills improving and I know I will only get better. I recommend piano lessons to everyone and if you are looking to have a great teacher John is your go to person !

Felt like an afterthought...

I could tell John was very into music, but not a strong ukulele instructor. He might be a wonderful guitar teacher or for other instruments, judging from the other reviews. My experience was that he did not send the lesson plans in a timely fashion, and was not fully present while we were in our lesson. Often he would spend time "trying to figure it out" on the uke rather than be teaching me something. He insisted on playing elaborate harmonies, while I strummed basic ones and would get lost in playing rather than paying attention to how well or not well I was playing. It felt more like an opportunity to jam out rather than teach at times. When a lesson is 30 minutes long structure is very helpful. I also felt like he had no idea what he had already taught me week after week, so a lot of lessons were repeated. To be completely honest, I started to feel like I would rather be somewhere else than learning an instrument, which is sad b/c I am very excited about learning. Again from the reviews he sounds like an incredible guitar teacher, so I would say that it's possible he was not as interested in uke teaching, but may be an amazing teacher for other instruments.
Isaac J. New York, NY

In 10 years of teaching the bass guitar, I've guided students from their first encounter with the instrument through professional performance and college study. I love teaching the bass because playing the bass ties together so many fundamental elements of music in every genre.

While I have a degree in Jazz Performance on the double bass from NYU, I have performed on the electric bass professionally in many styles from jazz to rock, soul, funk, merengue, and everything in between. Studying the bass with me can be as focused or as broad as needed for each student. I enjoy all of my lessons, learning each and every baseline on Sgt Pepper's, focusing on reading skills and music theory, or improvising walking bass lines over jazz standards. I always focus on the goals of my students and how best to build a true understanding of the instrument, it's role in an ensemble, and the tradition of the music.

About Isaac

Cited by All About Jazz as a musician with "all the groovy elasticity necessary to encompass the melodic complexity of compositions," Isaac is a strong voice among a new generation of musicians. Discovering a love for the piano, guitar, and bass in his youth, Isaac began performing in coffee shops and jazz clubs at the age of 15, quickly becoming one of the most sought-after young musicians in Westchester County. While still in high school, Isaac had the opportunity to study with jazz legend John Patitucci. Isaac's selection for New York's prestigious All-State Festival came as no surprise. Isaac graduated from New York University's undergraduate jazz program in 2009, where he studied with many seminal jazz musicians including Ari Hoenig, George Garzone, Kenny Werner, Jean-Michel ...

Gio A. New York, NY

I've played guitar and bass guitar for many years and am happy to share my experience and skills with novice players. I play and enjoy all genres of music - rock, pop, jazz, hip-hop, country. You name it!

About Gio

I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums. I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is what I'm passionate about and it's what I enjoy. I want to inspire that same passion into the hearts and minds of others. *** Lesson Details *** I am a laid-back teacher, fun, and I focus on the needs, abilities, and ambitions of the student. In turn, students must realize that learning an instrument takes a lot of work and dedication. One can't expect to learn very much if s/he only practices or thinks about the instrument during the lesson. If the student is willing to put some time into ...

Great, creative teacher

Gio has a great way of thinking outside the box and teaching my daughter each week. He uses creative methods to engage her and help her relate to the material and provides easy instructions for practicing during the week. He is patient and easy going which allows for her not to feel overwhelmed as she's just learning the guitar. I'm very happy with how he's teaching her!

Attentive and great at teaching technique

Gio truly focuses on the student's needs. I've met too many self-absorbed musicians in the past, but Gio really pays attention to details in the student's playing. He is excellent at teaching technique and was the first guitar teacher to help me fix physical problems regarding posture and arm tension. His kind, easy-going manner makes a student comfortable. He has a wealth of musical knowledge to share.

Bass guitar is one of my main instruments. I gig the most on this instrument as well.

About Jeffrey

I am a Hofstra University graduate with over fifteen years of experience in music. I have played at many of the venues in the NYC area and have toured with the R&B singer Macy Gray. I am currently working with four different bands in the tri-state area in addition to the session work. *** Lesson Details *** In my lessons I take a step by step approach on learn how to move and how to understand the instrument at hand. I require all of my students to learn how to read sheet music and how to translate onto their instrument. I'm a laid back teacher and will teach what is most appealing to the student but in an academic style. I teach the student not just to play but to understand what it is he or she is playing. I will cater to any level of playing and help give a path to further ...

Carissa Austria, age 8, learned piano with Jeff. Her lessons were instrumental in giving her the incentive to practice on her own. Jeff created lessons that made my daughter curious on how to play on her own and experimented with certain keys and sounds. Thank you Jeff for giving my daughter the deep insight to playing the piano not only from her weekly lessons but encouraging her to practice on her own with minimum supervision.

Sincerely
Gerry Austria

About Tony

Passionate about sharing my love of the guitar with students of all ages, I've been teaching for more than 30 years. A trained Flamenco guitarist, I found, at the tender age of 7, my passion when I heard the world-renowned Flamenco guitarist Sabicas. Studying Flamenco since then, I began, during my teens, performing professionally and have had the honor of performing with such nationally known musicians as Billy Bang (legendary fiddle player), Willy Calhoun (Living Colour), Vassar Clements Band, Tom Chapin, Stanley Jordan, Buddy Miles, and Michael Powers. In high school, I enrolled in an Honors Musicianship class at the RiverDell, NJ, Senior High where I learned to read scores, conduct and identify multiple instruments, sight read, orchestrate scores and compose music. Following my ...

Tony has worked as guitar accompanist for the past year and a half with our 700+ religious formation students from K-8 as well as our whole church assembly. He has played classical to contemporary Christian music with us and is fantastic. As a teacher myself, I see him as an ideal person to learn from. Tony is patient, kind, knowledgeable and tuned into kids as well as adults. You couldn't want for more in a teacher.

I strongly endorse Tony as a master pop and classical guitar teacher (as well as a dynamic, highly creative guitarist and pop/rock/folk tenor singer). I received a Master’s Degree from the Juilliard School in 1986 in voice, and he and I have worked on a weekly basis at churches and concerts since 2007. His mastery of incredibly rapid finger techniques in all major and minor scales, widely varied strum technique in so many different styles, understanding of audio production and vocal-instrumental microphone usage, as well as soulful improvised counter melodies is unmatched in my experiences. He also taught my son guitar, as well as many of my parishioners at my church, and they went on to playing frequently during church services and many other venues. His manner with children and teens is very gentle, humorous and witty, and is instantly beloved by all who meet him. Throughout my career I have rarely heard an artist who has more artistic and musical impact in concert or religious events than Mr. Tony. And the line of people wishing to meet him after concerts is so long that he does not leave events for more than 90 minutes or more. You cannot do better anywhere than having Mr. Tony as a teacher, colleague or friend.

I highly recommend Tony. He has taught both of my sons, Emmet and Connor, how to play the guitar with an emphasis on jazz and rock and learning the fundamentals needed for improvisational play. My eldest son, Emmet, began his guitar lessons in 7th or 8th grade and continued all the way through High School. Emmet commented to me that Tony was a really good teacher for his learning style and made it easy and fun. Emmet continued playing in college and used the fundamentals he learned from Tony to teach himself how to play the banjo. As a River Raft guide he was selected to be the guide on the "folk music" trip so that he could play along with the professional folk guitarist and vocalist. My second son, Connor, had played the saxophone and was in the jazz band in Middle School, and then decided he wanted to learn guitar in High School. He took lessons with Tony all through High School (9th through 12th) and learned all the chords and how to improvise. He enjoyed his lessons with Tony and progressed rather quickly. Tony knows how to teach according to each individual's needs which is very important. He customizes his lessons for students based on their interests and ability levels. He makes the lessons fun and interesting. I highly recommend Tony.
