Matthew has had the great privilege of performing around the world and working with some of today’s brightest and most acclaimed singers, ensembles, and conductors such as Leon Botstein, Dale Duesing, Karen Brunssen, James Hall, Warren Jones, Phyllis Hoffman, Pro Arte and VOCES8.
As an educator, Matthew's 10+ years of teaching experience in voice and drums has brought him to work with young musicians of all ages and skill types. Matthew's approach is technique driven, while at the same time, expressive, musically sensitive, and fun! Matthew's voice students will learn English and foreign language diction, ear training and sight-singing, proper posture, stage presence, confidence, and healthy vocal production suitable for all styles of singing. Drum students will learn the importance of snare drum rudiments, how to read drum charts, the nuances of various styles, as well as, develop dexterity and increase muscular function and independence.
Matthew holds a BM in vocal performance from the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin, an Honors Certificate from the IES European Society & Culture Program in Vienna, Austria, and is a two-time 1st Place winner of the Wisconsin National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition.

I'm an American citizen now, but I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa where my lifelong connection with the piano began. I later earned a B.A. in Piano and Music History, and a B.M. Ed. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. My first instrument is the piano and my teaching style centers around the development of traditional piano skills along with a foundation for life long learning. If desired by a student, however, other methods of learning to play the piano may be pursued, e.g. a chordal approach. I also teach voice with the same goals mentioned above
I have chosen the path of an educator because what I love to do most is bring the joy of music to any person anywhere who has the interest. My past teaching experience as a general music teacher in the elementary schools of Bridgeport, CT not only allowed me to discover the joy of teaching music literacy and singing in a classroom environment, but I was also able to grow immensely as a music educator and person, This passion for teaching is what I want to bring to my music students at TakeLessons.

Hi! My name is Barry and I have been teaching for over 10 years in the Fairfield County, CT area. I have had success teaching all ages, styles and abilities, from the most gifted to the physically impaired. I grew up listening to a tremendously wide range of music, and have studied classical flute, rock, jazz and classical guitar, and even the japanese shakuhachi, with some of the great minds of the instruments. I graduated high honors from Queens College with a Masters' in composition, and have had works performed by major acts in the contemporary classical scene. In jazz, I have shared the stage and recording studio with the likes of Marc Ribot and William Parker; I have quite a bit of experience as a performer that I bring to my teaching. My passion for music is addictive; I have turned the least motivated students into consummate music lovers. My goal is to find a student's personal musical voice so they have the opportunity to discover where THEIR musical passion lies. Whether it be country, rock and roll, or classical, the long term goal is to both teach the student what they love, as well as expand their musical horizons to discover things they may never have thought they would love.
