The private lesson experience is unique in that it allows for more “customized” instruction that group lessons or rehearsals alone are not able to give. The instructor and student work one on one as a “team” toward the ultimate goal: a better understanding of their instrument, and a higher level of musical development.
In every lesson, we will work to improve technique, tone production, and listening/music reading skills, among other things. I will assign exercises and/or pieces each week that are meant to challenge, not overwhelm! Sometimes I will assign an exercise that is expressly meant for a particular area in which the student may not be the strongest, in an effort to develop that area. Learning an instrument is a skill that takes time to develop, and it is within the journey where most valuable learning takes place!

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I started playing flute when I was 8 and bass when I was 13. In 2002, I moved to New York City to attend The Juilliard School, where I earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Double Bass performance. I came to Pittsburgh to attend Carnegie Mellon University, where I got a Master's of Music degree and a post-graduate Performance Residency Certificate. Since finishing at Carnegie Mellon in 2011, I have been freelancing in Western PA, Ohio, and West Virginia.

I have many years experience in playing and teaching flute lessons. Depending on your level, I will adapt a similar style of teaching that my teacher, Damian Bursill-Hall of the Pittsburgh Symphony, uses with me. Prior to Mr. Bursill-Hall, I spent 3 years studying with Rhian Kenny of the PSO. I also had 5 years of lessons before that, and started piano lessons when I was 7. I have attended numerous masterclasses and festivals with great teachers, and have notes from all of them. I have had many different lessons with other flute teachers as well. I can teach you classical music, baroque, romantic, etc. I can also teach contemporary, including beat box flute techniques and other extended techniques on flute or piccolo.
I am currently a junior flute performance student at Duquesne University, and I study with Damian Bursill-Hall of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. I am a former student of Rhian Kenny's, also of the PSO. I currently do a lot of freelance playing with my chamber group, the Duquesne Woodwind Trio, and by myself. I am an alumni of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the Duquesne Symphony Orchestra, Duquesne Wind Symphony, and multiple chamber ensembles. I have attended the Le Domaine Forget International Music Academy in Montreal, Orford Arts Center in Orford, QC, Advanced Chamber Music Seminar, West Virginia University Flute Festival, the Youngstown University Flute Festival, and will be attending the Consummate Flutist at Carnegie Mellon University in a few ...
Flute is my principal instrument, and I am excited to share my experience in classical, jazz, and celtic flute with my students. My teaching approach is to match repertoire work to the student's current needs. For example, a student who needs to work on building dexterity will be working on technical exercises while another student may be focusing on tone or dynamic expression in their weekly exercises. In addition to technique building studies, I encourage students to bring in works of any genre that they would like to excel in.
I have been teaching flute, piano, and violin in the greater Pittsburgh area for four years though I began teaching while earning my degree in music performance at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In addition to my teaching experience, I have 10 years of performance experience under my belt to share with students. I have experience in a wide variety of ensembles including: classical/orchestral, chamber music, contemporary ensembles, flute quartet, musicals, jazz combos, folk bands, traditional Irish music, and free improvisation accompanying poetry or narrative.
