About Me

As the son of a professional pianist from New Orleans, I was born and raised in a musical household. I began playing drums at age 6 and gradually began writing my own music on piano and guitar. I studied Jazz Performance at VCU, where I earned a B.A. in Jazz Drum Set & Piano Performance. After college, I spent 7 years performing, recording and touring in Austin, TX. In 2007 I started taking private music students and began teaching other subjects in public & private schools. My wife and I moved to Durham in 2011.

I like to let the student guide the lesson. Tell me where you are and where you'd like to be, and I'll offer my unique experience to help set long-term goals. Over the course of our lessons we will break those long-term goals down into achievable short-term goals and create your musical path forward. Every student is different, and I never teach the same lesson twice. I strive to inspire and support my students to develop a lifelong relationship with the music they love.

Dedicated Music Room: amps, guitars, drum set, keyboards, music stands, music library. Parents can sit in on lesson.

TEACHING
As a performer, soloist and active chamber musician, and as a pedagogue, I provide private lessons to any individual interested in the art of music, education, and the good times. My teaching welcomes individuals from the youngest to college students. My primary instrument is the Viola, and simultaneously I focus on the instruction of the Violin, and the early and beginning studies of the piano. I have great experience as master class teacher, sectional leader, group teaching, and individual or one-in-one pioneer.

THE OUTCOMES
Apart from the academic outcomes the student will obtain at lessons, my intentions as a teacher and artist is to incorporate and welcome the student in the fantastic music world and literature. One of the many purposes of music is the idea of the student developing a sense of responsibility along with following tasks in a didactic and dynamic manner. I love bringing and promoting the idea and the philosophy of enthusing and inculcating a leadership position of the student in the family, and building most importantly a harmonic and artistic environment among their relatives and into their homes. I love to program and propose little student recitals in where the student will have the opportunity in performing the pieces worked throughout the teaching sessions in a little concert for their friends and family. Every student loves the fun in which they get from these opportunities and from their performance experiences. I do believe that the learning and instruction of music is an important influential factor in participating and in the development of many other abilities and skills; in the expansion and promotion of creativity, the adoption of a more discipline attitude for other arts, it helps to easier approach other academic courses, and to focus on developing the tools and creativity to participate at their schools and anywhere else.

METHODOLOGIES
About the teaching methods used, I basically like to approach the beginner student through the methods of Suzuki, which is a very efficient and didactic method most pedagogues uses today. This one is a clear method that demands from the student and it simultaneous engages the interaction and participation of their parents, family, friends, and their community as well. In other occasions, it is most common that I would also incorporate a new student to my studio-transfer students-, who would have used other materials and methods with his/her previous instructor. In this case I would continue using his/her methods to examine the level and content learned and practiced. Then, it is in later lessons where we might establish and suggest other good methods and books to which the student might be ready to switch or scale up to.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Books, Stands, Metronomes, Chairs, Tuning & repair equipment, and more.

*** Specialties ***
Viola, Violin. Chamber, private, solo, & orchestra.

Thomas D. Chapel Hill, NC

Subjects Taught

Music Performance, Music Theory, Piano, Songwriting

About Me

I'm an extremely passionate and fun-loving musician wishing to utilize my unique set of skills in music composition, jazz piano, classical piano, non-jazz improvisation, ear training, and music theory to instruct my students in becoming well-rounded and expressive musicians.

I've performed extensively with UNC Jazz Combos as a pianist, along with other groups/bands around NC for gigs and fun. I've also performed at various venues as a singer/songwriter. In the Spring of 2012. I received the UNC-CH Department's "Thelma Thompson Composition Award" for my setting of Walt Whitman's poem, "Whispers of Heavenly Death" for Soprano and Piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
Each lesson would vary depending on the individual level of skill/wants/needs of each student. Accordingly, each lesson plan is very fluid, and will change as students progress.

Focuses could include: piano technique, ear training, scales, learning to swing (jazz), music theory, composing, song-writing, etc. In every lesson I will adhere to tried and true methods that have proven to develop great musicianship.

I consider myself different from other teachers as I focus more on creating a well-rounded musician. In my opinion, well-rounded musicians progress to professional levels much quicker than those stuck on one subject.

I'm very relaxed and laid back, and try my best to make lessons fun and inspiring. That being said, I do expect students to put in the time/hard work it takes to become great musicians.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Stand up Hobart M. Cable piano, excellent condition. Casio PX-320, 88 key, fully weighted.

*** Travel Equipment ***
It is expected that students will provide their own piano or keyboard, however, for an extra fee of $10 the Fender Rhodes piano is portable.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in both jazz and classical, and believe on training the ears and mind as extensively as the fingers. As such, I will offer to teach ear training and music theory to all of my students.

I'm an extremely proficient composer/songwriter who's written for chamber ensembles, jazz ensembles, vocal ensembles, vocal soloists, film, and the pop/rock medium. I can provide lessons in writing music for all ages and stages, from young to old/beginner to advanced.
