Super Happy

I am currently a drum student of Jan's and I couldn't be happier. He is a really great teacher. He obviously cares a lot about what he does and he is very good at understanding what each student needs individually to keep moving forward at a pace that is right for the student. He strikes an excellent balance between keeping the fun part of music alive (playing music!) and making sure that you receive solid technique instruction as well. He is super excellent at helping you understand how the things you are learning will build together over time (this helps a lot when some things are frustrating to make your body and mind do at first). You do have to do some exercises, but his focus is all related to working towards having fun and playing music. If you're a drum student, even as you're getting your first beats down he plays guitar with you right away (the first lesson in my case). It's really terrific to get a feeling for what it's like to play with other people from the very beginning. I can be self conscious about doing things around other people before I feel like I know what I'm doing. Playing with him right from the beginning helped me toss that aside without it taking hold of me this time, because, well, it's pretty darn fun to be completely honest. If you take lessons from Jan I am pretty sure you will feel very fortunate, as I do, to have found such talented and supportive instructor.

Speaking for Malcolm: Malcolm is enjoying the lesson sessions with Jan. Speaking for myself: I appreciate him always being timely and teaching my son by using the type of music that he is interested in. This helps him to stay interested and motivates him to practice.

Ben got me launched in rock and jazz drumming. I'd never played drum set before, and he had only six weeks to help me prepare for my 8th grade jazz band audition. He cut right to what I needed to know and gave me confidence to perform well in the audition. Twelve years later I'm drumming lots and still relying on fundamentals I learned from Ben. His talent is undeniable and he has benefited from outstanding music instruction himself. I remember him as a teacher who has high standards and will urge you to get better, yet he's patient and makes lessons a lot of fun.

Basics of drumming? Rhythms? Play with songs? Rock? Hip-hop?

I began playing drums in 1999, teaching myself in the garage. I took 2 years of drum classes in college and performed in a nationally touring band as a drummer. I have taught drums to a wide variety of students with a wide variety of musical interests.

About Jason

I've been playing music for over 20 years. I've been teaching for over 10 years. My main instrument is guitar but I also play and teach piano, drums, uke and bass. I play with two acts in the area: Nataly Lola (acoustic covers) and We Were Superheroes (original rock). I am constantly listening to new alternative music (98.7 and AltNation) as well as learning the classics for the cover band. I never have a bias for a song and am always surprised when the pop song on the radio is actually quite clever when broken down to its roots. As a teacher I cater to the student. I've taught Old Country, Jazz Theory, New Metal, Russian Ska (yup!) and anything else that you want to learn.

Jon B. Los Angeles, CA

I have polished my ability to teach the drum set through using method books, technology, and my own work sheets. Most importantly, I make it FUN!

About Jon

Jon B., a native of Cape Elizabeth, ME, started playing the drums at the young age of three. His musical taste was heavily influenced by listening to Tower of Power, Huey Lewis, Chicago, and other bands from that genre. By age six, he was taking drum lessons and playing in a band with his brothers. He then went off to study at Boston University, where he earned a degree in music education. Jon then decided to continue his education at the Berklee college of music. As a drummer, Jon is versatile and can play Funk, Rock, Jazz, Latin, Country, and practically any genre in between. Jon’s teaching goals include building a whole musician, not just a drummer. His students learn to read music and think melodically, not just rhythmically. His students are also taught to be very versatile ...

My son began taking piano lessons just before age 8. For two years we struggled through those lessons. My son would retreat under the piano or give up and in general was not making much progress. He wasn't enjoying learning music and the two teachers that he had did not know how to engage my son (who has Asperger's) in a way that was meaningful or effective. I was ready to give up on music lessons for my son when we met Jon. Jon brought his energy and enthusiasm for music and life into our home each week and my son caught on. My son started to WANT to practice and took on learning new and much more complicated songs. Jon's teaching style is very flexible, so when my son was into playing on the piano, that is what they would do, if he needed a break they would do some music theory work on the iPad, in between playing music, they would talk baseball. Jon connected with my son and was therefore a highly effective teacher for him. For the first time, my son wanted to perform in the Jam Session (recital) to show off what he had learned and he played an amazing rendition of Sweet Caroline with style and accuracy. After the Jam session, my son asked if he could continue taking lessons over the summer and could Jon start teaching him trumpet, in addition to piano. Jon encouraged him to try new things and got him excited about music. We were very sad to hear that Jon was moving away. We wish him all the best in his new endeavor.

Jon taught both my daughters, ages 9 and 11, piano for the past two years. His love for music is apparent and his enthusiasm infectious. My girls loved their weekly lessons and progressed steadily from total beginners to where they were comfortable enough to perform short solos at their end of the year performances. His lessons were always fun and engaging. We highly recommend Jon and wish him all the best in CA!

Jon was Ben's drum instructor for about two years. With Jon's help and encouragement, Ben got so good that we now enjoy hearing our 15-year-old son play the drums in our house as loud as possible. We like and trust Jon, and consider him a family friend. We were sorry when Jon told us he was moving to California, but excited for his new opportunity. Jon is one of the most sincere and enthusiastic people we know, and he makes learning music fun, Ben says. Jon gets our highest rating!
