Jordan M. San Diego, CA

Subjects Taught

Broadway Singing, Music Performance, Opera Voice, Singing, Speaking Voice

About Me

I am a professional singer and actor with over 10 years of performance experience and private vocal/acting coaching. I studied acting at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and have performed nationally in regional theater, for cruise lines, and several theaters in my current residence of San Diego such as the Lyric Opera San Diego, Old Globe, Lamb's Players Theater and Cygnet Theater. I have taught students from ages 7-adults, and my focus is always the dramatic and emotional aspects of the piece and how to use technique to release that emotion in a healthy and exciting way.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching style is passionate and encouraging. I have taken lessons from many teachers and have found what is useful and what only confuses a student. As such, my approach to singing is very simplistic, and often what I will talk about in the first lesson will be discussed during every lesson. Lessons will usually be divided into 1/2 vocal mechanics and 1/2 dramatic interpretation.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Music and acting texts, portable keyboard. Student need not provide anything.

*** Specialties ***
Broadway, classical theater

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice Lessons:
I tailor each lesson to the individual. I believe in a solid, vocal foundation in order to sing in any style. Daily vocal exercises, breathing exercises, and healthy tone production are the basis for my teaching.
Learning to sing requires knowledge about the vocal instrument and the musculature involved.
Acting exercises are also incorporated into the text analysis of each song in order to fully understand the meaning behind each song.
Each student should record their weekly lessons in order to review instruction and also to help with acquiring accurate listening and pitch skills.
Music should be purchased and brought to every lesson.

Piano Lessons:
I tailor each lesson to the individual. I use a variety of methods: Faber and Faber, Alfred Premier, Succeeding at the Piano. The lessons involve ear training, written theory, rhythm recognition, and songs (repertoire). My goal is to teach a well rounded musician equipping with the tools necessary to enjoy music for a lifetime.
Daily practice, attention to details, and enjoying the music are my goals for each lesson.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Upright piano
Ipad and laptop for special assignments or supplementary activities
PA and microphone for Advanced students preparing for auditions and competitions.

Acoustic Guitar, Arrangement and Composition, Bass Guitar, Blues Guitar, Classical Guitar, Composition, Ear Training, Gaming, Guitar, Music Performance, Music Theory, Singing, Songwriting, Speaking Voice

About Me

Hi everyone! I'm a hard-working musician with a background in live performance, songwriting, composition, and home recording. I want to help you perform the music you love, whether you're playing to your family, your webcam, or a 15,000 seat arena. I have been teaching private music lessons since 2007.

I am a graduate of UCSD, where I completed my bachelor's degree in music theory and composition. I have taken years of private lessons, played bass, guitar, and mandolin in local and touring bands, and released three albums of original music. I want to make your goals accessible.

*** Lesson Details ***
I focus on making lessons fun for my students. I emphasize the importance of practicing on your own and building confidence by performing live and/or writing your own songs. I love to help people get better at sounding like themselves.

During lessons from me, you can expect to play, sing, clap your hands, and become completely immersed in the music you love. Whether your goal is to perform in front of an audience, record albums, or just play for fun in your living room, I'll help you make that happen.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room, seating available, street parking.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I only teach students who provide their own instrument. I am willing to provide a loaner guitar for the week if a student's instrument needs to be repaired or is not accessible for any reason. I also provide homework when necessary :)

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching confidence in performance practices, technique, singing and playing, and good microphone habits for singing, speaking, and recording, and songwriting. I teach based on student needs, and I find each student benefits from a different curriculum.

Jessica A. San Diego, CA

Subjects Taught

Broadway Singing, Music Performance, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Singing, Speaking Voice

About Me

Jessica is a professional vocal soloist who performs with ensembles around the world. Her performances have garnered praise for their “…virtuosic whimsy” (New York Times), “expressive flexibility combined with imagination…” (The Sydney Morning Herald) and “…upmost security and power...” (Chicago Tribune).

Her students have ranged from opera singers to singer-song writers, to enthusiastic children and teenagers. She loves to teach a variety of genres, but always from the foundation of a body-oriented vocal technique. She encourages students to become knowledgeable about the music they perform and to develop the skills to be clear and expressive vocal communicators.

Jessica holds a Master of music performance from the University of California and a Bachelor of Music Performance from the Victorian College of the Arts. She is also an alumna of the Young Artist Program at the Victorian Opera Company. As a performer, she specializes in adventurous repertoire; singing opera, chamber music, experimental, conventional and contemporary-classical music. Her love of experimentation influences her teaching. She likes to take exploratory approach, to find the best way to help each individual student improve.

*** Lesson Details ***
A first lesson will always begin with getting to know each other. It is important to me that we figure out why a student has come to have lessons and to decide on the best path forward to help them reach their goals. Lessons will include a mix of technical work (to improve vocal tone quality, range, flexibility and ease) and working on repertoire. Students can bring in songs they want to learn and we work on them together. Alternately, I might suggest appropriate pieces to complement other things we are working on (for example, if we are working on improving some aspect of a students listening skills, I might suggest a piece that helps to cement that learning, or if we are trying to improve a student's ease in a particular part of their range, we might work on a piece that uses that part of their range).

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio is a room in my home, which is exclusively used for musical purposes.

*** Travel Equipment ***
A piano and room without distractions

*** Specialties ***
Classical, opera, music theatre
