Subjects Taught

Cello, Flute, Guitar, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Piano, Singing, Violin

About Me

I have been first trained as a professional opera singer as a child in Korea. For many years, I have performed on stage. When I came to America, I have continued to pursue education in voice (and piano) at Troy University and at Baptist College of Florida while seeking other degrees.

In addition to my main focus on vocal training, I am professionally trained to play instruments such as piano, guitar, flute, and violin. I have learned to play piano and guitar to initially accompany my own singing, but I have continued to study these instruments to this day. I have been a main church pianist, wedding pianist, collaboration pianist, and etc. For flute and violin, I have been a member of ensemble groups and orchestra (and symphonic band) and performed on various occasions.

These training has allowed me to start a music academy in Korea from 1990-1996. There, I have taught all the instruments I have learned: piano, violin, cello, flute, guitar, and voice. It started small, but it grew rapidly and before I came to US in 1996, I had over 250 students. I had hired 6 more teachers, one for each division. My students came as beginners and would leave as educated musicians, who entered competitions, performed in public events and at concerts, and sought degrees in music.

In US, I had a small music studio for many years in Alabama. My students have entered AMTA competitions for state of Alabama, sonata competitions, and many others. Some have won, and others have lost. Those who won smiled and those who lost cried, but all returned with good experiences.

Now in Georgia, I am starting to teach again. I hope to offer my new students same amount of care and education borne out of experience that I have provided for many, many years.

*** Lesson Details ***
Teaching is my passion. I have taught music for over 20 years to students of all ages, of all backgrounds, and of various levels of training. When I teach, I want to make sure that my students are enjoying the process of creating music.

Learning something new, or continuing the education may be difficult or frustrating at times. This may encourage students to give up prematurely. However, when learning is a fun experience, students can learn to truly appreciate the joy of music. I can offer you with this opportunity.

My lessons will typically consist of 3 main sections: music theory, practice (on instrument of choice), and art of performance. The degree of introductions to these will vary depending on the interest and the training level of the student. I may be using Suzuki or other curriculums that are organized and appropriate to the student's learning curve. I will accommodate the musical needs of everyone.

In terms of teaching style, I am patient, friendly, and accommodating. I like to enjoy each lessons with my students, so I will be smiling alot. It'll be a minimally stressful environment.

If you would like to have me as your music instructor, please feel free to ask for me and we'll get started on our musical journey together.

About Me

With a performance degree from the University of Georgia, teaching certification from Georgia State and over 25 years of professional teaching experience, I am able to offer my students a diverse range of instructional resources.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons include a warmup, music theory work, vocal or instrumental technique and then a vast selection of song repertoire to support new ideas in both technique and theory. Students are directed to watch or listen to examples of master performances in their field of studies. Clear weekly goals are made between lessons and I am always encouraging! Whatever life throws at you during the week doesn't have to stop your studies cold- we will come up with a plan that fits your lifestyle.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a small Protools setup with microphones and a Kurzwell keyboard. I like to be able to go online for some resources.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I regularly use the internet in lessons as well as standard published educational texts.

*** Specialties ***
I have been told that I am especially good at helping people make the jump from playing by rote to reading from the page. In vocal instruction, I am familiar with three schools of technique: the psycho-imagery school, the "anatomical" school, and the Italian "open throat" approach. My background in acting also contributes basic vocal projection techniques to vocal training. I am comfortable with all genres of music, including pop, rock, soul, R&B, gospel, jazz and opera. In instrumental studies, I am a woodwind doubler, reading fluently and transposing on-the-spot . As a jazz and gospel artist I improvise primarily on the flute and saxophone. My piano skills are equivalent to a second-year college piano major. I can improvise accompaniments as well as read piano scores. In addition to being a certified teacher in Georgia, I attained national certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in 2004.

She began taking piano with Dr. Francisco and Mireille Silva, MM, and later from Dr. Brandt Fredriksen of Georgia State University. Emily has experience in teaching private piano lessons for Dr. Francisco and Mireille Silva and is certified in their unique method of teaching known as the Silva Piano method. PIANO:
You will notice immediately that the way I teach piano is drastically different than the average teacher. I was trained by the best of the best and use their method in my own teaching.

My focus with beginners is to develop good technique and get them playing from the very beginning. I teach using Solfege (Do, re, mi...etc) which means we will do a lot of singing and memorize the notes of our pieces in the beginning. It is more important to look down at the hands and develop finger technique and build good habits when beginning to learn the piano.

I also do not neglect the left hand early on like so many teachers. EVERYONE can play with their left hand and both hands together, so why wait a year to get students to do it? We immediately learn to play left hand and hands together, as well as chords, and finally, different parts in the left hand and right hand.

Each student is different and will have different strengths and weaknesses, and as such, each student is ready to learn to read music at different times. Sight-reading and reading music is very important and will be taught at the right timing for the student. It is taught through solfege exercises and is very efficient and will stick with the student for the rest of their lives.

My philosophy is to have fun and reap the benefits of an effective teaching method with hard work and good practice and to be proud of what you can accomplish!

VOICE:
As an former All-State trained vocalist as well as a choral music education major, my focus in training voice is developing good singing technique to promote healthy singing, developing good tone, pitch and vowel accuracy, develop the ability to harmonize and sing in groups, sight-reading and music reading skills, and overall confidence in singing.

The goal of music lessons is not to just learn the notes and mechanics of an instrument, but to become a well-rounded MUSICIAN. With my lessons, we don't just go through a book page-by-page, rather, lessons are shaped around the musical tastes and interests of the student. Musical theory concepts are applied in actual songwriting and current popular songs. I accompany the students on various instruments, imitating a real performance situation. I teach all ages; beginners to advanced musicians.

Unlike a crowded music store with a cramped little room for lessons, my lessons are taught in a large, open, and well-lit home studio. There is an open waiting area where parents can listen as well. Parking is convenient on a cul-de-sac with a clear view into the teaching studio.
