About Me

Hi I'm a 27 year old professional musician that has worked hard to become a first call drummer for performance, instruction, and studio session work in the Atlanta area. Over the past 5 years I have toured nationally, recorded with countless regional, national and local artists, and have gained a positive reputation in the Atlanta community as a unique, innovative, and passionate drum teacher. I studied music at The University of Mississippi and I am qualified to teach numerous styles including Rock, Pop, Hip Hop, Jazz, Electronica, World and many others. I have years of experience teaching private and group lessons (I have been a Camp Counselor in Summer music programs). I offer inspired beginning drummers of all ages the chance to learn the art of drum set playing within a basic, relaxed, and fun context.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My drum studio includes 2 drum kits and percussion instruments to help aid in visual learning!

*** Travel Equipment ***
For student's home lessons I require at least one drum set (minimum of two piece), they must own a pair of drum sticks.

*** Specialties ***
27 year old professional musician Casey has been rising as a first call drummer for performance, instruction, and studio session work in the Atlanta area over the past 5 years. Within that short time, Casey has toured the country several times over, recorded with countless regional, national and local artists, and has gained a positive reputation in the Atlanta community as a unique, innovative, and passionate drum teacher. Based within a fun, relaxed context, Casey has developed a natural teaching method that focuses on learning and understanding the building blocks of drum set playing, familiarizing and connecting these building blocks, and applying them to individual expression. He has the ability to take nearly anyone without prior drum set or rhythmic experience, and, within days, turn them into beat playing drummers. His approach focuses on: HAVING FUN, building an understanding and relationship with each drum, the basic rudimentary foundation of drumming, how to approach the drums, hold the sticks, set up the drums, and tune the drums, basic mechanical techniques, development of each limb, learning how to read basic drum charts and play to them, learning and playing the most significant beats and patterns in the history of drum set, and gaining the ability to effectively teach oneself how to improve as a drummer.

About Me

A little about me... my name is Henry, some people call me "thehc3". I was born in Detroit and learned to play there. My first lessons were in school (Bates Academy, Renaissance High School) and in after school programs like the Detroit Civic Symphony & Jazz Orchestras, I even had an opportunity to learn at music camps such as Interlochen Arts Camp and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.
I moved to Atlanta to attend Morehouse College, and have been playing professionally here ever since. While in college, I studied music composition and was one of the original members of the group Jaspects. I played in EVERY school ensemble that had a need for percussion, In high school and college. I had the honor of being section leader in most of those ensembles. I've enjoyed playing all over the United States and even in a few other Countries.
I grew up playing jazz, but i love to play as many styles as i can; R&B, Hip-Hop, Latin, Rock, Gospel, just to name a few. I was trained classically and am familiar with many of the instruments in the percussion family but my primary focus professionally is drum set.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my lessons with beginners, I like to focus on the basics. We will start with learning about the drum and all of it's components. I teach rudiments (which are the basic building blocks of drumming), reading & writing music. I am a firm believer that reading & writing music is much like reading and writing any other language; if you are able to do those things, there is no limit to what you can explore. I will often ask students to bring in music that they like to listen to, and learn the songs with them. This exercise is engaging as the student first likes the music, and second they have learned something familiar... maybe to share with friends of family. I love to teach students what they want to learn!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room converted into music studio: drumset, computer and radio, seating just outside studio for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
i will provide a drum or drum pad with stand and a music stand. i expect the students to provide sticks, books, pencil and paper. if they can afford a drum pad, or drum(s) that's good, but not required.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in drum set. my first experience is with jazz, but i regularly preform gospel, rock, blues, r&b, and rap. I have been classically trained and am familiar with all percussion. I do not work often as a percussionist, nor do I own many percussion instruments, but i am proficient at most.

About Me

I have over 30 years of combined education and experience performing and teaching percussion and piano. I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Percussion Performance from the University of Alabama, with Piano as my secondary instrument. I hold a Master's Degree in Percussion Performance from Indiana University, with a Cognate in Jazz Studies. I have taught private percussion, drum set, and piano lessons for over 30 years. I performed for 10 years as a contract percussionist with the Savannah Symphony Orchestra, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the Macon Symphony Orchestra, and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. I have performed in orchestras with accomplished musicians including The Moody Blues (Chastain Park), Judy Collins, and Henry Mancini.

*** Lesson Details ***
I like my students to have some fun while they learn. I ask that you practice 30 minutes a day, so that you can spend your lesson time learning and moving forward. For piano, I use the Alfred series, as well as the Real Book (jazz standards), and of course sheet music for classical pieces and popular tunes. After three months, you will have learned how to play the basic scales and chords, as well as some introductory classical and popular material. On drums after six months, you will know the first thirteen rudiments and some of the basic rock beats, and you will be playing with some rock ballads. After six months on piano, you will be playing all of the major scales and chords and the basic minor chords. You will be playing some Bach and Mozart, and you will start on some basic jazz standards. On drums, you will have learned most of the 26 basic rudiments, and you will be playing along with some medium tempo rock songs. You will have learned some coordinated independence to start playing jazz and swing styles (which by the way are the building blocks for playing R&B and hip-hop). And you'll enjoy the journey! I enjoy seeing my students grow as they learn. I have had students of mine go on to play in the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps, get advanced music degrees, and become recording artists. The current Percussion Instructor at the University of Alabama was my percussion student. While I know that not everyone seeks to play professionally, you will learn the tools to play well. I look forward to teaching you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Front and side entrance upright piano in living room plus drum set, electronic keyboard, seating for parents.

*** Specialties ***

Percussion --- Rudimental, Symphonic

*** Lesson Details ***
The goal of music lessons is not to just learn the notes and mechanics of an instrument, but to become a well-rounded MUSICIAN. With my lessons, we don't just go through a book page-by-page, rather, lessons are shaped around the musical tastes and interests of the student. Musical theory concepts are applied in actual songwriting and current popular songs. I accompany the students on various instruments, imitating a real performance situation. I teach all ages; beginners to advanced musicians.

Unlike a crowded music store with a cramped little room for lessons, my lessons are taught in a large, open, and well-lit home studio. There is an open waiting area where parents can listen as well. Parking is convenient on a cul-de-sac with a clear view into the teaching studio.
