Bass Guitar, Guitar, Piano, Singing, Music Performance, Music Recording, Speaking Voice
A Professional Musician, I am now happy to pass my skills and knowledge on to the next generations so that they may have ALL the fun and enjoyment of music in their lives, that I had in mine.
I have toured the East Coast Venues (NYC to Key West) for 30 years, and produced 10 CDs, and have 3 EMMY AWARDS for sound track music for the EXPEDITION FLORIDA SERIES, Nature Documentaries. They were funded by the University of Florida, Museum of Natural History, and the Tourist Development Council of Alachua County, Florida.
I play acoustic and electric six string guitars, electric bass guitar, piano and keyboards, drums, percussion and hand drums. I majored in Flute and Voice at UF and have spent my entire life immersed in the world of music.
I have played classical, rock, reggae, folk, jazz, swing, country, bluegrass, praise, gospel, afro-pop, ska and 80's music. I have toured as a solo act, a duo, a trio, and with a full 6 piece band, SKATTERBRAINZ, for 8 years.
I am a professional writer and photographer for the LEWIS RIVER REVIEW based out of Woodland, WA.
I teach lessons and classes full time, five days a week, (no lessons on Fridays/Sundays) and also perform LIVE and in person frequently in local venues for profit and charity.
Bass Guitar, Piano
I believe that music should be a source of fun and enjoyment for the student. I work very hard to make sure that both the lessons – and the time spent practicing – are engaging, fulfilling, and most importantly, fun.
I have over a decade of experience both performing and teaching piano and bass, in almost every style of music. I have also studied music theory at Binghamton University, and studied jazz theory and performance with Doug Beardsley.
Bass Guitar, Guitar, Mandolin, Music Theory, Songwriting, Ukulele, Banjo, Harmonica
Originally from Minnesota, I have lived in the Portland area for the past 20 years with my wife, Ruth, and two children.
My formal music education began in 1979, in my home town of Minneapolis. I studied guitar, music theory and composition at the West Bank School of Music, MacPhail Center for the Arts, University of Minnesota (Jazz Studies), and locally, w/ Eric Skye.
Some of my musical influences are: Pat Metheny, Tony Rice, J.J. Cale, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Leo Kottke, Ry Cooder, Jimi Hendrix, Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery, Taj Mahal, Doc Watson, Jerry Douglas, Mark Knopfler, John Hiatt, Elvis Costello, Prince, Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Beatles, Stones...
My teaching experience began back in college when my guitar instructor, Billy Bernard ("first in class" GIT graduate; performed with Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Rufus Reid), decided to give me his "overflow" students when his schedule was full. I fell in love with teaching and have continued to teach ever since.
I have a lot of experience teaching children and young adults; I taught beginning and group lessons in Duluth, Minnesota for two years and for years after that in Superior, Wisconsin, where I ran a guitar program and developed the group lesson curriculum. I have had great success teaching all ages and playing levels, and feel comfortable teaching most playing styles (fingerstyle or plectrum/pick).
My musical journeys have given me a broad base of music knowledge and performance experience; I have studied and performed many styles of music with numerous groups and ensembles over the last 35 years; Pop, Rock, Country, Folk, Bluegrass, Blues, RnB, Funk, Latin, Jazz, Big-Band... I currently play with a bluegrass/neograss/americana group, SwitchGrass.
I consider myself a musical "generalist" because I don't really play or specialize in any one style of music. I am a multi-instrumentalist with interest and experience in many different styles of music. Guitar is my main instrument, but over the years I have become proficient on Mandolin, Banjo (5-string and Tenor), Ukulele, Bass, and Harmonica. Playing multiple instruments and styles helps me to see music and musicians from many angles; I can help a student become a well-rounded, thoughtful musician, not just a "guitar player."
Over the years I have been involved with numerous aspects of the music business, including Radio DJ, Music Buyer for a music chain, and I owned and operated a local music store for 12 years (CDs, DVDs, Games, Guitars, Amps). I have obtained an obscene amount of knowledge and information about musicians, recording, instruments, and the music business in general, and I believe that these experiences give me an extra broad perspective and help to make me a better music teacher.
I am the father of two very active and talented children, one with A.D.H.D. and the other with dyslexia, so I do have some experience dealing with and teaching children that are hyperactive, impulsive, and have learning disabilities. I believe that studying, practicing, and playing music has been extremely helpful in my children's intellectual development and has played an "instrumental" part in building their character and positive self-image.
Bass Guitar, Guitar, Piano, Singing, Music Performance, Songwriting
I have been a guitar and voice instructor for over 15 years. I really love this job! I had a real hard time learning guitar when I was growing up because of an accident to my left arm, but I wanted to play so much that I was able to overcome it. Because of this I think I have learned to be a very patient teacher. I see students who get frustrated and think that it's too hard to play the guitar, but I promise you my program is fun and simple.I can show you the steps to success. I have taught over 500 students in a variety of cities from Minneapolis Minnesota, to Los Angeles California, and now Portland Oregon. I am currently obtaining my Masters in Music education and spiritual psychology from Marylhurst, and I have taught every age from 5-65. I am also a performer, and I own my own music publishing company through ASCAP (American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers). I also currently teach Piano to level 2, so if you are a beginner, you will love my new program. Music is my life, I can help you make your dream of playing guitar or singing come true. You can do it!
Bass Guitar, Guitar, Classical Guitar, Flamenco Guitar, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Songwriting
I've studied music at Portland State University, and am well dug into the Portland music scene. I teach you how to turn basic chords and strumming patterns into your own musical ideas, as well as learning your favorite songs. I have experience teaching students how to play most any song in front of family and friends, or with others. Students will get real music theory training as well as advanced guitar techniques. I usually teach students to sing and play the songs in order to help students work on melody and chord structure at the same time.

"Cole, you are destroying my son's summer video game aspirations."
For a over decade, Cole Robinson has been dedicated to music education, community development, and youth mentorship. As an educator Cole has taught, designed, and supervised unique and highly acclaimed curriculum in music education, outdoor leadership, and youth empowerment.
Raised in Newport, Oregon, Cole began learning to play guitar at the age of eight. During his teenage years he would travel to seek the tutelage of guitarists including Dan Balmer, John Stowel, Tommy Emmanuel, & Jeff Peretz. He left Newport to pursue his education at the University of Oregon and received a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies in 2007. Shortly after, he relocated to Portland, Oregon to continue his education, this time in Music. Under the supervision of Darrell Grant, Jeff Putterman, and Alan Jones, Cole received a Bachelor of Arts in music with a focus on Guitar, Composition, and Music Technology from Portland State University in 2011. During this time he supervised the Audio Engineering Program (Portland State Professional Sound) at PSU where he produced over fifty live musical performances annually while training student audio engineers in a hands-on environment.
Cole’s work as an environmental advocate and outdoor educator has always run parallel to his passion for music. With the aim of improving and maintaining the health and beauty of our beloved Northwest, he has coordinated numerous events including cleanups of the Rouge, Willamette, and Sandy Rivers, written multiple grants for environmental advocacy groups, and has led over one hundred wilderness trips for youth and adults from highly diverse backgrounds. Cole has had the pleasure of working with such great youth and environmentally focused organizations as Culture Jam!, the PSU & U of O Outdoor Programs, All Souls Community Center in New Orleans, and The International School in Switzerland. Cole has been actively certified as a Wilderness First Responder since 2004.
In late 2011, Cole was hired by Portland Parks and Recreation as Coordinator of the Teen Environmental Adventures Program and dedicated himself to providing Portland’s Youth with opportunities to become involved with environmental awareness and immersion. In this position, Cole developed many partnerships with local community agencies including Hacienda, ROSE Community Development Corporation, IRCO, Volunteers of America, Latino Network, and the Portland Bhutanese and Nepali Refugee community to provide hundreds of hours of environmental education, job-training, academic support, and long-term youth mentorship programming for these groups.
In 2013, he voluntarily left his position with the City of Portland to focus more directly on teaching, composing, and performing music through the founding of Pacific Guitar Studio (PGS). Through PGS, Cole aims help people find the musicianship, mentorship, and creativity that they seek though providing individual lessons, coaching ensembles, and providing school-break youth music camps.
Cole Robinson looks forward to working with you or your student and helping guide them to a deeper appreciation and understanding for what it means to be an artist and musician.
"Cole inspires quietly through example and cares deeply about the young people he works with. His goal is to figure out how to make each individual shine, excel, and feel empowered and this he does!"
