About Me

I would first like to say that I was born into a musical family. My Dad (choir director) and five older brothers were not only the majority of the choir in our large Catholic church, but Dad had a "tame" Frank Sinatra singing style. My mother played harmonica and piano by ear so acquiring musical intellects spread quickly to all of us. Most of my siblings sang and played instruments as we had a piano, guitar, organ, harmonica, trumpet, clarinet and a recorder to use as we pleased, with or without a music teacher.

I started singing and playing the piano at age four. With consistent encouragement from my oldest sister (a professional organist for 40+ years), I learned piano and music theory while I was learning to read English, started guitar at eight. A natural born singer, I learned the basics of voice while in choir from middle school through high school while accompanying myself on piano or guitar when singing privately or for others. I wrote my first song at 17 and worked my way through college playing original music in coffee shops while earning my bachelors degree. After college, I started touring across the US (this was long before American Idol and the Internet when if you wanted to make it, you had to "pay your dues" on the road first). Working in the studio was always the most fun and challenging, my first original song got air play in 1990 (this was before CDs).

I received international distribution of my original music starting 2004; however, around that time I learned that performing was not my preferred way of providing service to others - teaching then become my passion. So while working for a local public school district as substitute teacher for general music classes (orchestra, band, choir as well), I was asked to write and teach a beginning songwriting class. From the very first day I had kids' attention wherever I went; and some of those students eventually recorded their own songs in studios.

After 30+ years of professional musicianship spanning across two continents (US and Germany) with originally produced music available on iTunes and two CDs on the market, I have found a unique way of teaching music to others. I most enjoy teaching families with two or more siblings (along with parents, grandparents, etc.) that want to learn to play a variety of instruments and music together. Married couples are welcome too, I can get any combination of people playing music together.

*** Lesson Details ***
First of all, I'll need to know you or your children's goals, dreams and natural talent(s). What types of music do you love best? Are you more the serious type or fun-loving (I can work with both types of personalities but do require a respectful demeanor).

I stress taking lessons once per week. It is extremely important to develop the brain, nervous system, physical coordination all together with momentum and repetitive physical movements; particularly, the first six months of learning.

Please do not expect overnight success, hand/motor skills need to be developed and that doesn't occur with one or two lessons, unless you've had prior experience on your instrument and just need to refresh your brain's neural pathways.

If you are the creative type and wish to compose your own music, then by all means let me know as I teach not only composition, but arranging, music production, and the legal aspects of copyrights and distribution.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano lessons will be given on my baby grand piano. You will need your own guitar or ukulele, I will be using my Yamaha acoustic-electric classical nylon string guitar OR my Epiphone folk steel string guitar. Please see the photo noting the studio's microphones/vocal monitors, plus I have a variety of hand percussion. There are wide varieties of musical opportunities and experiences with me.

*** Specialties ***
Piano: Beginning/intermediate classical piano; pop (piano/voice). Guitar: Beginning classical guitar (fingerpicking only), or beginning general guitar (notes, chords, fingerpicking, strumming, using a pick). Ukulele: Beginning note and strumming patterns. Voice: I can take you to professional levels! Lastly, I would like to take on students who want to learn Joni Mitchell's style of piano and guitar playing. She has never had any formal music training, only plays by ear, particularly on guitar she uses many open tunings inspired from sounds of nature (i.e., birdsongs, ocean waves, etc.).

Here are three recent written recommendations:

"I would highly recommend Ms. T. She has been coming into our home to teach myself and my three children ranging in age from 10 to 4. She tailors each one of our lessons to our ability level and she approaches each lesson with tenderness, care and respect. She has even created special lessons for my 4 year old to engage his creativity and ideas. We have used other instructors before, but have never had such personal attention. I couldn't imagine using anyone else."
Erin O. May 2012

"Ms. T has been teaching my 6 year old daughter classical piano for almost three years. Ms. T is very patient, knowledgeable and encouraging. My daughter wasn't excited about taking piano lessons initially but has really grown to love to play and looks forward to lessons with Ms. T. I recommend other moms give her a call."
Cathy C. March 2012
Year First Hired: 2011
Top Qualities: Personable, On Time, High Integrity

"I am a 58 year old man who has always wanted to learn to play the piano. It wasn't until I met Susan that this dream became possible. I wasn't sure I could learn a new skill like this but she had me reading and playing music within the first couple of lessons. I am impressed with her teaching skills but her performance skills as well. She made me feel relaxed and confident from the beginning. I would highly recommend her to anyone wanting to learn a new instrument and whether you are 4 or 84 she can help make your dream of playing a reality." R. Roberts January 2013

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that every students has more potential then they realize. My goal is to help bring out their potential while providing a professional, personal, and enjoyable experience. I give my best and I expect my students to do the same.

My background is in classical music and this provides a solid foundation to successfully transition into all genres of music. During a standard lesson, I will begin with vocal warm-ups, sight reading and ear training exercises. The bulk of the lesson will consist of teaching them to sing correctly, melodic expressions, and performance showmanship. 90% of singing is feeling and 10% is technique...meaning you have to feel how things are done with your body correctly to understand and continue to model the correct and safe way to sing any style of music. I finish every lesson with constructive criticism, positive reinforcement, and a quick summary of how to prepare at home for the next lesson.

My teaching philosophy is that a great teacher is measure by the success of their students. I understand that each student learns differently, therefore, I always adjust my teaching style to meet the needs of the individual students.

As a soloist singer for a National Choir she traveled all around Europe, performing in France, Holland, Germany, Hungary, Greece inter alia. Danaila earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and Master’s Degree in Voice Pedagogy in Bulgaria, both with honors, and received a special mention as outstanding student. *** Lesson Details ***
I am a loving, very patient, passionate and enthusiastic teacher. I like to motivate, encourage and enjoy the fun making music together.
All lessons are absolutely personalized and based on the student’s age, level and capacity. They are structured and focused for improving skills and achieving student's individual goals.
Students will learn how to prepare and use the body to its utmost capability as a complete instrument and resonator system; how to take and manage the proper breath for a maximum efficiency; how to use the appropriate position to guarantee a healthy sound production and singing technique that will protect and improve the individual voice and last for a lifetime.
Another part of the lesson is focused on selected repertoire: how to approach, understand and perform a specific vocal piece. If you are an advanced student you will be also taught diction in Italian, German, Spanish, Latin and Russian (depends of your needs).
I highly recommend to students to record themselves during the lesson because audio recordings and video recordings are great ways for apprentices to learn by observing their mistakes and strengths.

The piano lessons are focused in building and improving the right technique using special exercises and proper repertoire. I am familiar with many of the Piano Teaching Methods and will recommend the best for you according to your age, level and goals. Learning and playing pieces from different periods and composers is important to develop artistic sensitivity as a performer.
I specialize in classical training and I believe that a strong background in classical music is important for any musician, regardless of their musical preferences.
