About Me

I have studied guitar thoroughly for the past 5 years. Its wonders have brought me immense joy and serenity. I want each and every student to discover the magic that music creates in our lives and the lives of others around us. Along with the disciplinary aspects of practice, learning an instrument such as the guitar can open imaginary doors like no other instrument. The musical possibilities are endless.

Lessons with me can be either good or great. I am pretty laid back, but keep a strict tone at times. I like to form great working relationships, as well as lasting friendships with my students. I like to get to know who they are and what they love. It helps me discover how and what to teach them. People are different and like different things, so it is part of my job to ensure that they are enjoying what they are learning. I don't spoil them with pop songs though. I use many traditional, classically involved studies and techniques, as well as all the knowledge that I have obtained from college curriculum. Lessons will include: aural skills, theory, history, and maybe even some jokes here and there.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, guitars, marimba, amps.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Guitar, books, amps, tuners, metronomes and whatever else they might need for guitar. I would expect them to provide at least a guitar for themselves. It would be nice for them to have the above I listed but all they really need is a way to practice.

*** Specialties ***
I mainly play classical guitar and flamenco. I do dabble in other styles just to keep it challenging.

About Me

My students have done amazing things, including everything from singing a lead role in a show to conquering stage fright to rocking as lead singer with a band to sparkling in recitals... and nothing makes me happier than watching them succeed!

I'm a young performer who loves singing, playing piano, dancing, acting, and being onstage! I've studied voice, opera, piano, and performance skills in America, Paris, and Italy. I am now working on my PhD in Musicology at the University of North Texas, and I'm looking forward to teaching students here!

I earned my BA in Music (Piano/Voice/Organ) and my Masters in Vocal Performance from the University of Minnesota Duluth, where I received my training in vocal- and piano pedagogy. I also spent three and a half years in Europe studying and performing in conservatories. I love foreign languages, and I speak French, Italian, Spanish, and Turkish, and now I'm learning German. I've had specialized training in singing in foreign languages, which opens up a whole world of music for me and my students!

My opera performances in the last few years have included the following full roles:
Inez from Il trovatore
Frasquita from Carmen
Cherubino from Le nozze di Figaro
Giannetta from L'elisir d'amore
I've also performed opera scenes, art song, musical theater, and sacred music.

I also produced Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance with a cast of young singers ages 8-18, and after just 1 month of rehearsals and voice coachings, my students sang music from the classic operetta just like professionals... even my 8-year-old soloists charmed the audience with their moment in the spotlight!

If you're looking for a teacher who will make you top priority, work tirelessly to make sure you get what you're looking for out of lessons, and always be willing to listen, I can't wait to meet you!

I believe that students learn better when lessons and practice time are fun! Whether your goals include singing/playing for fun at home, performing in competitions, preparing for college level music study, or just learning to perform like a star onstage, we can work together to choose music that you'll love. I incorporate a little of everything in lessons: performance, music reading, sight reading, musicality, and theory. We work together to set practice goals that will help you make progress, but that fit with your schedule and keep learning fun. I'm always open to requests and questions!

My teaching strategy is to respond to your learning style and move at your pace, getting the most out of each lesson and your practice time. Being a strong performer is about dedication, loving what you're doing, and working smarter (not harder) to get maximum benefits from your practice time.

In 3 to 6 months, you can expect to be reading musical notation, on the road to healthy performing technique, and excited to play or sing your new repertoire for your friends!

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students should have a piano or keyboard (including voice students). A CD player (or speakers for an iPod) is helpful but not required.

*** Specialties ***
Opera/classical voice
Learning to sing in Italian, French, German or Spanish
Beginning and intermediate piano (children or adults)

Lisa Kay F. Fort Worth, TX

Subjects Taught

Acting, Broadway Singing, Film Acting, Improv Acting, Method Acting, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Piano, Singing, Theater Acting

About Me

I am a singer-pianist. Or a pianist-singer. :-)
I have a bachelors degree in voice performance and a minor in piano and theater.
I have a masters degree in voice as well as a second masters in piano literature.
i have a certificate in comedy improvisation from Second City and am a professional actor.
My post graduate work is in vocal pedagogy.
I have been a professional teacher and performer for over 20 years. My students come in every model imaginable - and I wouldn't have it any other way. Raw beginner or veteran actor or musician, professional recording artist, College music major or American Idol wannabe.

The arts are such a great language for communicating. I grew up with two parents who were professional musicians (mom is a concert pianist) and I also raised 3 children who are professional musicians. We made music our native language in our home. We all have the ability to speak music when it is spoken to us. I don’t ever remember not playing the piano. I started winning piano competitions in high school. I minored in piano, and then did additional post graduate work in piano. I “speak” piano. It has served me so well as a teacher, composer, opera coach. It is really a gateway to understanding all other instruments. The same scenario with my singing.

I began my professional career as an opera singer which has taken me around the world. I have premiered works by Leonard Bernstein and Samuel Adler in addition to principal roles and concert work with Pittsburgh Opera, The Pittsburgh Symphony, Dayton Opera, the Tuscia Opera Festival and hundreds of professional engagements. I have also had the wonderful opportunity to belt the National Anthem for several major league teams in a television appearance- and has done so on multiple occasions. (Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati Reds) I am passionate about vocal jazz and musical theater and am frequently found as a performer in various national and regional venues. Feature concert works include PBS (Gershwin in Concert) as well as featured solo concert works (Pergolesi Stabat Mater) on Italian Public TV.

My approach to music has always been to do what you love. I have never limited myself as a performer to a genre or an instrument. I have explored, applied myself to and enjoyed a very diverse musical career. If you have a passion for an instrument or style of music let's start there first... and then let's discover together all the things you do that uniquely define your musicianship style.

Your lessons will always be engaging, challenging and fun!

I am very consistent in my approach to technique, my focus on goals and my demand for excellence. I constantly am working to access with you what your goals are and to provide feedback and support to help you achieve them.

I am very flexible in utilizing a wide variety of repertoire, resources etc. Your lessons are personalized to your skill set and your musical interests. I utilize audio and video recordings almost every week for all my students. I routinely promote and encourage my students to participate in a wide variety of competitions, recitals, workshops and master classes.

I have a very low turnover rate for students and a very high rate of students who have progressed to professional full time careers in music. Students like being a part of my studio and really like the confidence they have in their music abilities in a very short period of time.

I do not use the same curriculum for all students, in face, each curriculum is customized for that student. The components are similar: technique, repertoire, theory, listening, composing, recording and performing.

You can expect the following:You will feel very encouraged and supported in your talent. You will have measurable improvement in your skills. You will have a personal advocate to encourage and direct you in finding and creating opportunities to succeed in your music personally, academically and professionally.

I can't wait to get started!
