About Me

I started late on the guitar in a family of musicians. I picked up the guitar when I was 18 years old when I found an old acoustic at my grandfather’s house. From then I was self taught listening to Punk Rock, New Wave, and learning from friends. My love for the instrument and music drove me to really apply myself to really learning how to play. I would sit and just be creative, writing my own songs and putting little back yard bands together with my cousin and friends. Then, it was time for college and had to make a decision on what to study. Music was my passion and I never really taken a lesson before. I prepared myself by studying with Stephan Ferrara-Grand in San Clemente,CA for a short time to audition into the music program. I passed! I graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the San Diego State University School of Music and Dance in 1999, and I studied jazz guitar with international guitarist/violinist Art Johnson and theory with David Ward-Steinman. From the time I graduated, I have been playing professionally and recorded five releases of my own as well as made appearances on others and have toured the country several times playing my own original music. My bands have opened and/or toured with the likes of Dee Dee Ramone, Blink 182, Green Day, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Jimmy Eat World, Ten Foot Pole, Big Drill Car, and Leeland. I also play for Day 7 and Revival Christian Fellowship where I shared a stage with Greg Laurie, Franklin Graham, Raul Reis, and Jon Courson.

I have been teaching music for over 10 years. I love my lessons to be laid back, light, yet focused. The lessons are tailored for the students needs/levels. For the beginning student we start from the basics. for example, tuning, vocabulary on the parts of the guitar, to basic chord shapes and strum patterns. Almost from the beginning, I introduce music theory to the student. I believe it is important to the musician, because music is a language that is spoken through the instrument and also read by the musician. Not just piano or band instruments, but guitar too! Guitarist always seem to get left behind in this. I teach it hand in hand with the guitar and it comes naturally while learning. Some students want to learn songs and/or to write songs. This is what I have been doing for many years and enjoy it! As the student progresses, I love to pull the creativity out of the students. Music is also art and a passage for the individual to express him/herself. It is a joy to see and help a musician to mature on the instrument!

I do not use a set curriculum. I prefer to discuss goals and music with my students and their parents to determine what genres, styles and techniques they are most interested in. I then use techniques I have gained through experience along with songs and classical exercises to develop strong technique, a developed ear and the ability to read music. I do expect students to be disciplined, practice regularly, and be prepared for lessons, enabling them to expect the same from me. Whether a student wants to be a classical virtuosi or learn how to play a song they heard on the radio, I will keep the lessons fun and interesting for anyone willing to practice and learn, and I will always to my best to cater to the student's individual needs and goals.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I provide all copies of music, handouts, exercises, etc. Students are expected (when applicable) to have an instrument in good, working condition.

*** Specialties ***
I form all of my lessons around being able to learn, memorize and play songs, read written musical notation (along with sight-reading & technical exercises), and improvisation (based on scales and exercises).

For guitar and it's relatives (bass, mandolin, ukulele, banjo) I can teach any style or genre of music, including modern tapping techniques, and I also teach TAB notation.

I teach both classical and popular piano, usually combining classical sight reading exercises while learning both classical and popular repertoire.

I have experience acting and singing on stage in both non-musical and musical productions, as well as five years of classical vocal experience singing in high school and collegiate ensembles. Being in these environments has equipped me with the tools and exercises to be able to teach everything from basic singing to fundamentals in broadway and opera.

I also have a small studio in my home where I write and record, providing me with the opportunity to also teach recording, songwriting and music theory.

About Me

At the early age of twelve I began beginner guitar lessons through a privately owned guitar shop near my home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. By fifteen I expanded my guitar know-how through lessons with virtuosic guitarist Trey Alexander. These lessons with Trey introduced me to playing blues, rock, jazz, and metal styles of guitar. Around seventeen years old I began classical guitar studies with Skip Redding and piano lessons with Michael Schmaldienst through Penn Manor High School. I also sang in the high school choir and played guitar in the jazz band. To prepare for musical studies in college I began advanced theory and composition lessons with Dr. Simon Andrews at the Pennsylvania Academy of Music. I decided to stay near home for college and I was admitted to Millersville University for a B.A. Music Performance degree with a concentration on classical guitar.

I continued to sing, play piano, write songs, learn drums, bass guitar, banjo, mandolin, and further my musical theory studies. At one point, I was in two local rock bands, singing in choir, assisting my guitar professor Marcia Englar with guitar ensemble, and working on my solo classical guitar repertoire. Diversity in music has always been important to me and I pride myself on knowing a wide range of guitar and other musical performance practices.

After I earned my undergrad in Music Performance from Millersville University I auditioned at the University of Redlands here in Redlands, CA. By August of 2012 I was packing my car with all of my guitars and hitting the road for Southern California. My experience with music at the University of Redlands has has been phenomenal. I take lessons with Stuart Green and Bob Bozonelos, assist undergrad students in guitar, music theory, and history, and sing in the University choir. I love where I live, I love music, and I want to share my knowledge and experience with the world.

My goal as a guitar instructor is to teach YOU what YOU want to learn. Whether you want to lean chords and play guitar at church or learn jazz tunes and play in a jazz band. I can teach electric guitar, acoustic guitar, but my classical guitar skill is very advanced. The more specific your musical needs the better! I also have great experience with kids and teaching beginners if the students desire with the instrument are not specific yet.

I am very much a laid back guy, but I believe in doing homework and CONSISTENT practice. This does NOT mean a demanding "six hours a day" practice routine but rather a very focused brief practice period 4-6 days a week. Every student is different and I want everyone to have fun and enjoy the best instrument in the world. If the student has fun and keeps focused I firmly believe in noticeable improvement almost immediately!

With respect to guitar I have multiple books and literature in my library students may use. These guitar books cover beginner to advanced techniques. When it comes to bass guitar, banjo, or drums I mostly teach off book but I am more than able to introduce literature on these instruments as well.

I live, breath, and think music all day everyday and it would be my utmost honor to share my musical skills with you!

About Me

Hey, I'm Michael! I'm 22 and I've been teaching modern music to students of every age and skill level since 2007. I've also been performing with all types of amazing musicians right here in the Inland Empire since I was 10 years old. I've gained valuable experience touring up & down the west coast in a variety of productions. Along the way I've been lucky enough to work alongside some of the most talented musicians, producers, promoters, songwriters, performers and teachers in the music industry today. Now, with a mastery of a wide variety of instruments and unparalleled experience performing in every type of musical act imaginable, it's my goal to pass on my knowledge to the next generation of modern musicians.

For your first lesson we will assess how much skill you already have on your instrument of choice. We'll discuss what types of bands & artists you already enjoy listening to and what type of musician you'd eventually like to become. Right from day one we are going to dive right in and start making music!

From there we will put together a custom tailored lesson plan that's as unique as you are. We will focus on what you will enjoy learning most and mix in some super fun and challenging exercises taken right out pop-culture's most exciting and famous tunes.

Students who learn the music they know and love are proven to learn faster, retain information longer and have more fun compared to students who attend "ordinary" music lessons which focus on book work and boring exercises through repetition. Custom lesson plans assure the best possible chance of success in the ever-changing modern music industry.

Students are required to have enough equipment to be able to successfully practice on their own... how else can they get better? However, for those who are just starting out or are not sure what to buy yet, I do offer consultations for students individual needs as part of their first lesson. About Me

I started tutoring when I was in the Second Grade. I was part of a group that went to the library and helped teach Kinders how to read. Since that time I've just continued to help people around me because it seemed natural. This continued until I was tutoring my friends on their college homework while we were at lunch at our high school. I have always heard, and continue to hear, "You're really good at breaking things down," and, "When you describe it, it seems simple."

I love to tutor people because I'm of the mind that there isn't anything that anyone _can't_ do. As long as it's explained in terms the person can understand, there really isn't.
