Upright bass has in fact been my main instrument for my professional career. I have played upright bass since I was 13, going through classical method and thoroughly studying theory and improvisation. I went on to study Jazz Studies at Northwestern University where I started gigging professionally at private events and around the city of Chicago. I have played upright bass with small jazz groups, country/bluegrass bands, a classical string orchestra, musical theater orchestra pits, and rock bands. I can take you from day 1 of getting good sounds out of your upright bass, to playing with the bow, reading music, creating your own bass lines to songs of all styles, and playing in a jazz context of improvising bass lines and taking solos.
Hello! I am Swen, a musician, producer/engineer, and songwriter. I gig professionally around the Bay Area in various bands and jazz groups. I mainly gig on bass (upright and electric), but I now play drums in a garage rock/surf rock band. In addition to bass and drums, I also play and teach piano and guitar, as well as music recording/producing/engineering and music software. I can travel to your location to teach, or you can come take lessons at my studio in Oakland. Feel free to contact me to discuss your musical goals!

I have been teaching upright bass for 10 years, and a number of my students have grown to win performance awards and continue to play professionally! For beginners, I enjoy using the Essential Elements series of books - if you would like to learn Jazz, we would rely on The Real Book. If you are in an orchestra, we would also use your orchestra music for the perfect applied lesson!
Hello! I have been performing musically for over 15 years, and I have been teaching privately for 10.
