About Me

I love sharing my passion for music with my students. They describe me as a Fun, Patient, Punctual, and Organized teacher.

I hold a B.A. degrees in Music and Spanish from San Jose State University, and have 15 years experience in teaching and performing.

My musical palette encompasses Jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Symphonic, Opera, Reggae, Funk, Rock, R&B.

I am very fortunate to have shared the stage with many masters in the Jazz and Afro-Cuban/Salsa scenes, notably: Karl Perazzo and Jeff Cressman (of Santana), Louie Romero (Hector Lavoe and Wille Colon) Wayne Wallace (Wayne Wallace Quintet) the famous salsa vocalist Tito Nieves, Cuban-born vocalist Fito Reinoso,
legendary Bolivian charango player Eddy Navia, Bolivian guitarist Gabriel Navia, Eric Rangel y su Orquesta America, Julio Bravo y su Orquesta Salsabor, and the Pacific Mambo Orchestra.

Besides music, I enjoy salsa dancing. I have been dancing for ten years and have been teaching salsa dancing for three years. I also believe in furthering my communication skills. I belong to my local public speaking Toastmaster club for 2 years. I also enjoy art very much and have been drawing as a hobby for three years.

My first belief is that music lessons should be fun and help foster self esteem as well as self confidence in musical expression. I believe in a safe and encouraging learning environment filled with curiosity, exploration, and laughter.

During the lessons I concentrate the building blocks of musicianship as we switch off from accompanist and lead roles in the musical examples in the lesson books. I also focus on music theory by discussing chord / scale relationships and how to apply them to improvisation or composition. I also stress students be able to vocalize what they play to help with their ear-training.

I strongly believe in student performances. I prepare my students to perform in recitals, performance groups, as well as auditions and entrance exams.

Buying instruments can be very confusing. I go the extra mile to help my students buy the right instrument and accessories by accompanying them to the music store and offer my feedback. Parents and students feel they've made the right choice after careful thought goes into the purchase of their instruments.

Whether you just want to play in a band or major in music, you can learn how to enjoy playing music and build your confidence on your instrument at your own pace.

About Me

As a teacher, my years of experience and study with a wide array of teachers has given me a unique perspective on the process of music making and how everyone can benefit from the act of music making. As a professional musician with a diverse background, I have years of performance and teaching experience to offer my students and to help them overcome any musical difficulties with ease.
Positions in professional orchestras I have held include Principal Bass with the Amedeus Operenensemble in Salzburg, Austria, Assistant Principal Bass with the Northern Symphony Orchestra (MN) and St. Peter's Chamber Orchestra (Redwood City, CA) as well as with the Boise Philharmonic. I am also an avid chamber musician, composer and improvisor, a founding member of the San Francisco Bass Quartet and the Argentine Tango group Tangonero. I have also worked as a session player at San Francisco's Hyde Street Studios and recently collaborated with Third Eye Blind and Jherek Bischoff.
I studied the double bass at the University of MN with Christopher Brown of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and earned my B.M. at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music studying with Scott Pingel and Steve Tramontozzi of the San Francisco Symphony.
I have also studied electric bass with Steve Hanson, and drum set with Pete Hennig and Dan Rheinhardt.

In my years of private teaching experience, I have found that it is most important for the student to have a clear goal or idea of what they want to get out of the lessons. This way both myself and the student have a clear understanding of what we want to accomplish and how I can help make the musical dream a reality. I have found that every student has different musical strengths and tailor my lessons to help the student overcome their specific challenges and strengthen the skills that come naturally. After several months studying with me you can expect to have better understanding of how your instrument works and developed basic skills to play simple tunes by ear and play some of your own music. But most importantly music is FUN! My ultimate goal is to share my love of music with all of my students and help them develop the same love for it that I have.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Comfortable and clean private teaching studio w/ drum set, keyboard and amps w/ seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
As a professional freelance musician in the San Francisco Bay Area I perform regularly in a variety of groups that encompass many genres, including: Symphony orchestras; jazz combos; Argentine Tango groups; folk, rock and funk groups; Bluegrass and more.
I place an importance on nurturing students to become lifelong learners in a safe atmosphere that allows the student to feel comfortable making mistakes and to eventually help them find their own "voice" without negative constructive criticism, because after all, music is supposed to be fun. When starting lessons with a new student I make an effort to learn what kind of music they want to play, in order to establish a place to start and to ultimately give them the tools they need to create their own music in any style that they wish.

About Me

*** Travel Equipment ***
Well, I have an upright bass, two bass guitars, and two bass amps. I'm willing to let students use any of these things during lessons, but they wouldn't be able to hold on to any of it.
I'd ideally hope for my student to have their own bass, and an amp if they only have an electric bass.

*** Specialties ***
Jazz is my strongest genre, but I can also teach genres like pop, rock, funk, hip hop, reggae, blue grass, since I have played those kinds of music a lot. I studied the Simandl method book for upright bass and I have used it in teaching upright bass technique.

As an expert in Leadership, Teaching and Learning, I believe that Learning is best accomplished when the relationship between Student and Teacher is mutually interactive and FUN! I believe that in order to be the best resource for any student I must recognize and understand not only students' needs and desires but also know and understand each individual student. These objectives help me to focus on exactly what students want to learn and bring out the best in students' performance and production.

About Me

I recently graduated from the Master's of Music program at the San Francisco Conservatory of music. I've played with many orchestras in the bay area including the Berkeley Symphony, Napa Valley Symphony, Stockton Symphony, and more. In my undergrad, most of my playing was in jazz. I've toured Europe (Italy, Switzerland, and France) with a big band in 2007, and performed at Yoshi's. I began on the electric bass in high school, playing in bands and everything from the Beatles to Tool. I also picked up some electric guitar. I've taught double bass annually at La Honda Music Camp as a double bass counselor, and look forward to taking on many students and sharing what I've learned, and what I will continue to learn with them!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am easy to get along with, and I relate very well with students. Lessons are laid back and I tend to make a lot of jokes, but the material itself is rigorous and I expect a great deal of effort. I enjoy sharing musical philosophy, and I believe that private lessons have generally 2 main functions. 1) For the student to achieve the level of learning how to practice independently from the teacher (and discover their own musical voice), and 2) (at an advanced level) for the student to learn that specific teacher's approach to musical philosophy and that specific instrument.

My curriculum will vary greatly depending on the needs or wants of the student. For beginners, I might start with exercises/etudes to begin developing fluency or coordination. I will teach how to read music and understand the fundamental building blocks of music theory, and continue depending on the student's interest. The materials depend on the genre and instrument. For more advanced students lessons will be more focused on specific topics (advanced techniques, repertoire, excerpts, theory, auditions, philosophies, etc).

*** Studio Equipment ***
Basses (electrics and uprights), electric guitar, electric keyboard, music stand, amps, other misc. supplies.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students provide the instrument, music stand, and books or materials which will be discussed.

*** Specialties ***
Orchestral double bass is my highest specialty. My undergrad was mostly in jazz. The longest experience I have is in electric bass playing rock/oldies/etc. I'm well educated in music literacy and analysis.
