Whitney H. Dallas, TX

Subjects Taught

English, Piano

About Me

I am a classically trained pianist who competed in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area for 15 years (began lessons at age 5). While I do posses the training that allows me to instruct students who are interested in performance level musicianship, I by no means expect my students to desire this for themselves.

My students have different interests and each are at a different skill level. Each student presents unique challenges, goals and progress so no matter what your interest/skill level is, we will make sure you are happy and successful.

*** What you can expect from me ***
After a brief discussion about your goals, background and schedule, we will formulate a plan that will help you achieve your goals. Whether that's a goal to learn all your scales by the end of the month, learn where middle C is, learn to read with greater speed, or learn Bach by the end of the year; we can make it happen. I do not expect you to learn the way I was taught (although if you want a strict regimen, I can provide that). I am a big believer in motivating you in the way that helps YOU succeed. I promise I am patient, pleasant and enjoy my job; you have nothing to be afraid of.

*** What I expect from you ***
Please do not contact me if you don't have a piano to practice on at home. I expect my students to practice because that is THE MOST important aspect of learning any skill; piano is no different. Please respect my time; if you need to cancel, do so in the appropriate time frame. Most importantly, I want you to communicate honestly with me about your goals and if you want me to change how I explain things, tell me. I am here to help you learn and it's very easy for a teacher to forget that they aren't breaking down the subject enough for their students.

*** A note to parents ***
If I am instructing your child, please be prepared to communicate regularly with me about his/her progress and specific goals. I want my students to practice at home on a continuous basis and this may mean you, as the parent, must reinforce this expectation at home with your child on a daily/regular basis. Many parents find this responsibility inconvenient so please consider this before contacting me.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I own a 1942 Kimball Consolette piano (see pic of studio). She's old but she has soul. I have a variety of sheet music that I can provide (the student must sign the music "in and out" when using it so I can keep track of who has what and can only mark it in pencil).

*** Travel Equipment ***
Please bring your workbooks/sheet music to every lesson. Bring a pencil and a metronome if you have one (there are many iPhone metronome apps).

*** Specialties ***
I am a classically trained pianist who competed in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area for 15 years. This means that I was trained to perform and compete only, playing songs that were required by competition guidelines. I participated in everything: Jazz, Sonatina, State, Solo, Ensemble, Regional, Hymn, you name it! This also means my "specialty" is classical music (Mozart, Bach, etc.)
