I've had years of lessons myself that provided that push and input I needed to grow on my instrument. Not just guitar too, I've played tuba, trombone, even sang in school choir up into college.
Speaking of college, I attended Macomb community for a couple years taking classes in theory and classical guitar. Also, I went to Berklee school of music in Boston for their summer sessions, I highly recommend it if you want to learn a lot real fast . It is THE guitar college, wish I had the money for it. BTW they placed me in advanced classes when I was 15 years old : ) smirk
In general my specialty will always be metal and blues. Though I did learn Womanizer by Britney Spears just so I could create a death metal version. In my time as a for hire studio guitarist I had to remake a lot of different styles of music. Music is Music, pitches and rhythms. Style and technique is what gives it soul and feeling.
If you're in a band already I can give you tons of advice. I joined my first major band at 19... my band mates were 29-40. Got plenty of studio and live performance advice and tricks. You can see me on stage in my photos, no I'm not passed out... my signature move was the bend backwards til I'm lying on my legs. I hate being old now - frown.
*** Lesson Details ***
You will have to buy some books if you're just starting out. I know most of us hate theory, it's a pain and can get very boring if you're not trying to be a classical virtuoso. In the end you can only fake your way through so much and theory doesn't need to be a set of rules like it's a private school code of conduct. It will help you through improvisation, song writing, and understanding how and why music sounds evil, beautiful, strange, happy, sad, etc...
Now the other half of your lesson is whatever you want to learn. Any song, I won't judge you if it's backstreet boys (i figured out a song or two by them.) guilty. My old band was even on a rock tribute album to Motown. We played Get Ready by the Temptations. HA!
If you don't practice then I won't give you the evil eye or berate you. Just know if you are in the same place as the last lesson, then there's not much I can do to further your study. I rather you have fun with me and playing guitar. Why do something you don't want to?

My living room set up with equipment for lessons, a computer, lil' mixer, seating for parents, outdoor porch for the warm days. WiFi access, extra guitars if your's is broke.

I expect them to have a guitar and amp, purchase their own books. I can print my own lessons and transcribed songs. It's best to have a blank tab book so I can write notes that you can bring home.

I have been playing guitar for 28 years. I took formal guitar lessons for seven years, have won numerous awards locally and nationally, and have been a professional musician for most of my life. I have studied music theory elaborately, was accepted to both the Berklee School of Music in Boston and the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles. I choose to start on a musical career immediately after high school; and did so in my hometown of Detroit. I play/teach, have written, performed, and recorded everything from classic/indie rock, jazz, classical, flamenco, etc. I currently front my own indie rock project "The Static Dial", as guitarist/vocalist/songwriter.
I teach all ages; from very young children (ages 6-8) to adults. Music samples are available here on my profile.

As an instructor, I start students with the basics (open chords, major/minor diatonic and blues scales, rhythm/timing, and beginner technique), and like to get at least a basic ability to sight read (music notation).
For younger students, I get them started on a beginner book for sight reading music.
If a student is a little more capable, we start on a more modern/popular song they like. For my more advanced students, we get into music theory (cycle of fifths, harmony, chord language, etc.) and with some students we study specific genres.
My approach is one of building up the students sense of practice, self confidence, and to encourage their sense of creativity. I take teaching seriously and value my student's time; so I work to get the most out of them, and make it fun. All ages and levels are welcome!

I'm a singer/songwriter as well as a guitar player/instructor, so the construction and arranging of a song; from the music, to the lyrics, to the vocal melodies; are very much within my experience and teaching.
I also studied and play Flamenco guitar; as well as other Mediterranean/near eastern instruments, such as Greek Bouzouki and Middle Eastern Oud. I have also recorded in all these styles.
I teach all styles of guitar, as I have been in many different types of music situations: Soloist (Classical) Ensemble (Classical and Jazz) Lead and Rhythm (Various Rock and Roll bands) Songwriting and Recording. I am a people person that learned the guitar from many different sources. Most of my learning came from watching others and communicating with others. I like to learn about the people I am teaching so that I can better understand their needs as a musician. My education came as a practical necessity in order to get better as a teacher and performer, as well as make a living doing it. But, by no means do I preach the need to be "educated" but only to be a working, practical musician. I will surely go over the need to read music once the need becomes evident, enlighten you as to why it may be important to understand certain aspects of music as opposed to just "picking and grinning", IE learning only "By Ear." I do specialize in music theory, and have many students taking lessons simply for this excellent foundation for songwriting also.
I am a classically trained guitarist that performs both as a soloist and for ensemble in a wide variety of styles. I graduated in 1996 from Schoolcraft College with an Associates degree in Music performance, and then, studying under the tutelage of Brian Roberts went on to receive my Bachelor's degree in Guitar Performance with a secondary in Jazz from Wayne State University in 2004. While at Wayne State and along the way I've performed and participated in several masterclasses with renowned artists: William Kanengiser, John Holmquest, Philip Candelaria, Jason Vieaux, Scott Tennant, and Antigoni Goni. I have also completed the teacher requirements for books 1-a and 1-b for the Suzuki Guitar Institute.
Many of my classical guitar and electric guitar students have went on to study further at the collegiate level, some achieving scholarships. My most recent students are current Berklee school of music graduates now in a band called "Flight of Fire", recently opened for Bonjovi this past summer and are getting air time on local radio stations... well on their way to living the dream! ‚¬Ä¶the bulk of my students become full time professional musicians.
*** Lesson Details ***
I am an extremely patient person who has been teaching for over 15 years. I am laid back so there will be no pressure. With my electric and steel string guitar students, I host a special "Jam Session" 2 - 3 times a year to which will be one of your goals to participate in. This includes playing with a drummer, bassist, singer and another guitar player (usually me) and having it recorded. This should serve as your motivation to practice. This really eliminates the need for me to pull out a "yardstick" and "smack" your hands over the knuckles when not practicing your scales as many old traditional teachers may have done!
At your first lesson I will talk with you and give you examples of music that is played with a Flat-Pick, or music that uses the Finger-Style technique. This will be an important process as it will dictate which direction you will go in as a musician and especially during our lessons.
For the most part, playing with a Flat-Pick is generally used with the electric guitar and with most mainstream styles of music like "Rock and Roll", "Blues", "Rock-a-Billy" "Funk", and playing with the Finger-Style technique is used in styles like "Classical" and "Folk." After a while, I will introduce you to the other style of playing as well, as most great guitar players use both techniques in their playing...musicians (guitarists) such as: ‚¬Ä¬úJimmy Page‚¬Ä¬ú, ‚¬Ä¬úBrian Setzer‚¬Ä¬Ě, ‚¬Ä¬úStevie Ray Vaughan‚¬Ä¬Ě, ‚¬Ä¬úJoe Satriani‚¬Ä¬Ě, ‚¬Ä¬úLindsey Buckingham‚¬Ä¬Ě, ‚¬Ä¬úPaul McCartney‚¬Ä¬Ě, ‚¬Ä¬úJohn Mayer‚¬Ä¬Ě, and many, many more.
To make learning the guitar Fun, I make sure to incorporate your main interest(s) first. Whether it be learning your new favorite song(s), learning how to write a song, or just learning some basics that you can use for when sitting around the campfire. This will be intertwined with which style you choose to start with: Flat-Pick or Finger-Style.
Pending on the level that you are starting at, (beginner, intermediate, advanced) I will include tidbits of music theory that will be used in a consistent manner. These will usually be progressive, pending on your level. For example, the songs you learn will be written out in an easy to understand chart that will have the fundamental aspects of theory (IE, chords, key, and rhythm pattern) that all musicians should understand.
With Children learning with a Flat-Pick, I encourage the use of a basic guitar instruction book.
Level One (beginners) :
"Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book One" by Will Schmid.
I will also use as a substitute for Level One:
"Alfred's Basic Guitar Method" by Alfred's Publishing Co.
More advanced players who can read music already (and graduates from book one) I prefer;
"Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book Two"
With Adults, I will ask if learning to read music interests you. It is a vital part of a practicing musician, but sometimes your needs may require a more one dimensional approach as time may be of essence. Again, I learned by ear and educated myself later...so I understand the person who wants to hold off on reading right away.
Students who want to learn the Classical (Finger-Style) approach will be encouraged to purchase a beginners book that I use written by one of my first instructors/mentor. It is a very intuitive book that covers the technique in great detail yet is very easy to understand (along with my help.) I will provide means of acquiring this book at your first lesson.
Students who want to learn the Folk (Finger-Style) approach will usually start in the above book, unless your an adult who just wants to learn some basics.
At your first lesson I will also provide you with documentation that goes more in depth about the various styles of guitar as the above info is scaled down.
