Paul M is an American born, New York-based pianist, music instructor, piano teacher, composer and vocal coach. As an educator, Paul is part of The Suffolk Piano Teachers Forum, College Music Society and Music Teachers National. He has been an Adjunct-instructor at New York University (NYU). Paul also conducts master classes and seminars in The United states and South America. For the past few years, he has implemented classes in composition and music history in the coastal area of Ecuador and New York. His music studio in New York City is in high demand. He works with piano, composition and vocal performance students of all levels and styles which includes classical, jazz, blues and Broadway. Paul also works with all different types of students such as those who want to learn for personal enjoyment or for professional reasons. He prepares his students for competitions, audition preparation and professional concerts. Each year his students have the opportunity to perform at the world-renowned Steinway Hall in New York City. This yearly student recital gives students the opportunity to perform in one of New York City’s most sought after recital Halls located in midtown Manhattan.
As a pianist he has won numerous awards and scholarships. For two consecutive years, he received The Suffolk County Piano Teachers Forum Prize. Paul has played numerous recitals at prestigious halls such as Steinway Hall in New York City, Faust Harrison Hall and The Staller Center. Paul has always been active in Chamber Music and has played with The Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra and The New York University Symphony Orchestra. He has studied with well-known piano teachers including: Martin Canin, Morey Ritt, Tina Dahl, and Anita Gelber. He received his Bachelors of Music from Stony Brook University and his Master’s Degree in Piano Performance at New York University, studying with Martin Canin.
As a composer, Paul's music has been highly reviewed and is heard through the world in concerts and films. His composition teachers include Max Duykers and Justin Dello Joio. This year, he will be releasing a new C.D. that will include his most recent works for solo piano. The C.D. was performed and written by Paul M. and engineered in Nashville Tennessee at RedRed studios by critically acclaimed recording engineer Joshua Silverberg. The C.D. is set to release on Amazon, iTunes and bookstores in November 2011.

My goal as a teacher is to make students successful in their goals. I work with a variety of people; some of them study music for personal enjoyment and others for their musical career. Everyone responds differently to music, that is why I prepare special lessons for each student. It is important that my students enjoy what they are playing and for that reason I have a variety of repertoire that they can choose from.
From a lot of experience with beginner piano students, both young and adults, I have been able to find a regimen of piano teaching that combines time efficiency with fun. As the lessons continue, I slowly add new tools to each weekly lesson that are exiting and interesting. While working with intermediate to advanced students, I have had coached them to apply and get accepted into some of the top Universities and Conservatories in the country. My students, beginner intermediate and advanced levels, have been awarded for their performances and activities in schools and competitions.
I am also a composition teacher. I work with composition students from beginner to advance. My composition students, over the years, range from all ages starting at 7. My students, after the first year, have been able to write string quartets and piano trios. My advanced students have entered competitions all over the country and are very successful in their composition practice. Some of their compositions have been performed in famous concert halls and schools.
As a vocal coach, I work with students of all ages. The repertoire that I recommend to beginner students includes Disney, Broadway and classical music. For intermediate and advanced vocal student, I have successfully prepared them for competitions, Broadway and University auditions as well as personal enjoyment.
Most recently I held a piano, composition and vocal recital for my students at the world famous Steinway Hall in New York City. I believe that some students work better when there is motivation for performance activities. For that reason I host these type of events. Students that decide they want to take place in these events perform among all levels. I offer these performance opportunities as an invitation. Each student has a choice as to whether they would like to perform.

About Me

I believe everyone has the ability to sing … some better than others, of course, -- but regardless, I believe every voice can make a beautiful sound. I believe learning to sing requires team work: with the proper instruction and learning tools from me, the instructor, and with the dedication (practice, practice, practice) from you, the student, a well-rounded singer can emerge.

I began singing when I was five years old in church. I continued singing exclusively inspirational music until I was a teenager. At that time, in addition to the second soprano part I sang in a five-part harmony
a Capella (without instrumental accompaniment) Gospel group, I also sang in a couple of bands (Rhythm and Blues, and Jazz). My undergraduate studies were completed at the American University, where I majored in Communications (B.A.), and minored in Music, voice being my instrument. During my undergraduate studies, I was recruited and performed as the lead female vocalist for a Rock band that a few fellow music students had formed. While in college, I was trained in classical voice, piano, music theory, musical theater performance, and vocal pedagogy (vocal training). My vocal pedagogy studies credentialed me to become a professional vocal instructor. I began teaching voice after I earned my degree, and have been teaching private voice lessons for over ten years.

Most of my present expertise in teaching voice grew from my vocal pedagogy studies, my teaching experience which has developed over time, my own personal vocal dedication, and my training and understanding of various genres of vocal performance. My present singing career is as an inspirational singer; my vocal students encompass various genres in which I have experience, including: Inspirational, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Rock and Classical.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students by using the tried and true techniques I have found to be successful, and allow the student to be my guide as to which direction to take with his or her vocal training. Whether the student is a novice, a professional, or somewhere in between, each student, after obtaining the basic singing knowledge and techniques, will have a vocal training schedule geared to his or her individual needs and development. Lessons are for the most part very casual in nature, and the student’s dedication (practice, practice, practice) will dictate whether or not the lessons become stricter. A few months into the vocal instruction, students will be given the opportunity to learn more about reading music and sight singing, if he or she so chooses, as well as vocal performance techniques for singing in front of an audience. Within one year, dedicated students may also have the opportunity to show off what they have learned, and perform in front of an audience at a recital with other vocal students. Please note that my preference is to work with teens age 13 through adults of any age. I believe that younger voices need more time to develop and stand to be damaged if too much stress is put on them too soon. However, exceptions for children under 13 may be made for gifted young singers.

About Me

On singing and performing: I've been a musician for a very long time and can testify that music heals on a mind, body, and soul level! Though my official performances in front of audiences started with playing woodwind instruments such as clarinet, sax, and flute from elementary school through high school in band, my primary instrument in earnest has been voice for the past 27 years.

However, my Mom told me that I have actually been singing--well, humming (a recognizable tune at that!)-- since I was nine months old. I've lead numerous solos in small ensembles and large choirs over the years, and was very involved not only with the adult music ministry at my church, but directed the children's choir as well. I'm a huge fan of arranging and creating harmonies for duets, trios, and small groups. I’ve shared the stage with Erykah Badu, Ruben Studdard, Rickey Dillard, Chrisette Michele, Ledisi, Peabo Bryson, and CeCe Winans.

I love musical theater, and my favorite credit has to have been when I played the role of "Mama" in Once on This Island (though Nunsense runs a very close second!).

I have a strong passion for the arts--music in particular, and have the musical talent and enthusiasm to guide, empower, and improve the vocal tone, projection, and pitch for the willing student.

Every student is different--diversity is the spice of life! I tend to tailor my teaching style to the needs of the student. I do expect each student to work on their craft outside of "class" (even if it's just 10-15 minutes of practice a day) and come eager to learn. My teaching style is a co-creative process when it comes to helping students reach their goals. My demeanor is gentle and humor-filled, yet firm. Whether you're preparing for an audition (with all the mental, emotional, and physical energy and health that goes into it), want to hone your harmonizing skills, or just want to strengthen what's already inside of you to the next level for fun, I can help!

On being an economist: Economics has been my trade and training since 1993. I've been an analyst at the Florida Legislature as well as consulted in the private sector, but my first love has always been teaching. I've been teaching the intro to micro- and macroeconomic classes consistently since the beginning of 2007 at Southern Methodist University. The algebra comes up a lot in these classes, so I've often ended up tutoring students one one in algebra as well. I was thrilled when Takelessons added academic tutoring to their offerings in addition to music lessons. :)
