My students will develop a passion for music and a desire to play!
I like to get right to the experience of actually playing music. I start with learning songs, drum beats, and chord progressions and get to technique and music reading AFTER we have had some fun.
My key to successful teaching is to create a custom curriculum for each student. Some students are interested in the details of how to do it "right", and others just want to rock. I try to adapt to different learning styles and musical goals to give each student an ideal experience.
I want students to learn how to play, not just how to read or do drills. We will listen to music together, and talk about the function of each instrument. For drummers, I play bass lines on the piano and we lock into a groove. For piano students, I play along with drums or percussion. It's important for students to learn how to play with others, and to listen and get inspired by what's around them.
Students will have the option to perform in a student recital where you are backed by a band of professional musicians!
***John D.'s Biography***
I was born in Amsterdam, Holland, where my father worked as an opera singer. While listening to vocal warm-up arpeggios, my mother bounced me on her knee and taught me rhythms and rhymes.
In my family we beatbox, play piano, and sing together. The family moved to the States in 1995 where my parents worked as music teachers. My Dad is a voice professor at the University of Wisconsin, and my Mom runs an amazing music program at Country View Elementary School in Verona, WI.
I played in the band program throughout high-school and had an amazing and demanding music teacher and highly talented friends. The drumset became my passion and I played, blissfully and recklessly, as often possible. Our teacher took the high school band on a concert tour of Europe in 2002 in Austria, the Czech Republic, and Italy.
The band program led me to classical and contemporary music at the University of Wisconsin, where I honed my craft and discovered the profound breadth of music around the world. I paid my way through college as a member of the WI Army National Guard Band, a great wind ensemble with jazz and rock band components, and slowly built a career as a musician. I took every gig that came my way and created my own if nobody was calling. Pretty soon I became "the guy in, like, 8 different bands", including Funk, Rock, Jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and West African bands. I've been working as a musician ever since, performing several nights per week, and teaching during the day.
I began teaching drum lessons to my friends when I was about 18 and realized I was really good at it. I began taking on private students and teaching group lessons and classes. Students of mine have achieved the highest ranks at the State Solo and Ensemble Festival in Wisconsin, and auditioned into the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra. I am on the annual faculty Wildcat Percussion Camp, was adjunct faculty at New York University, and directed the world percussion ensemble at the University of Wisconsin. I've worked as a teacher with the Madison Area School District, Wisconsin Youth Company, YMCA, Global Arts to Go, University Settlement, and in many different public schools in the New York metro area. I taught a high school class called "The Spirit of Jazz", and
I've learned how to be a real teacher, to put myself in your shoes to help you achieve your potential as a drummer, and as a musician. My teaching style is to de-mystify the art of percussion: getting great sounds out of the drums, being prepared for any style, practicing productively, and focusing your mind.
I have a Bachelor's degree in classical percussion from the University of Wisconsin, a Masters degree in Jazz Performance from NYU, and have traveled to Africa, Europe, and Latin America to perform, record, and study. I have performed with Badal Roy (Miles Davis), Chris Potter, Kenny Werner, Brad Shepik, Lenny Pickett, Chuchito Valdez, and many other great musicians. I was Adjunct Faculty at NYU's jazz program, and at the University of Wisconsin dance program. I've given masterclasses at Juilliard, University of Michigan, Lawrence Conservatory, and many other colleges. I played for 5 months in the Off-Broadway show "Fun Home", and toured and gigged with a wide variety of bands.
I've recorded on nearly 20 albums and have been involved in many other projects. Ask me anything you want in our music lessons!

Aaron holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Management from the University of the Pacific. At Pacific, Aaron studied both jazz and classical music, and performed rock/gospel music on campus. He did graduate studies through Liberty University.
He has directed instrumental music at Sunrise Community Church in Fair Oaks, CA, and directed the worship ministry at Escalon Covenant Church in Escalon, CA.
Aaron has been teaching private lessons since 2007, and has been teaching marching percussion at high schools since 2008. His students students have earned college music scholarships, honor band seats, and professional performances, and the winter percussion ensemble he taught won first place at NCBA Championships.
Aaron has a broad range of musical experiences including performances in rock bands, R&B bands, drum corps, orchestras, chamber ensembles, jazz bands and combos, and many many more. He loves sharing this diverse musical background with his students.
As a timpanist and percussionist, Aaron has been an extra member of the Stockton Chorale Society Orchestra. As a drummer, Aaron has worked professionally in the pit at Magic Circle Theater company in Roseville, CA. As a bass guitarist, Aaron performed professionally with Sacramento area jazz guitarist Greg Perkins. As a guitarist, Aaron has led worship and played on worship teams.

7. Listening is vital to understanding music! Aaron's students listen to and analyze recordings of music they like to gain insight and understanding to how the music works. Aaron encourages his students to play along with recordings to work on the organic elements of music which cannot be gained from dry academic study. Guitarists will start with either an acoustic guitar or electric guitar & practice amp. They will also need a metronome, tuner, and notebook. They will learn to read music, tablature, and chord symbols, and they will learn to play melodies, riffs, and chords in the style(s) they prefer.

They will learn to read music and tablature and play bass grooves and solos in the style(s) they prefer. Drummers and percussionist will generally start with a pair of sticks and a practice pad, learning the basic techniques of drumming for the first 6-12 weeks, and will move on to drum set or percussion instruments as they demonstrate proper technique. Phil B. has Bachelor's Degree in Percussion Performance that he earned at Central Washington University in 1991. Soon after graduating from CWU Phil relocated to the Seattle area and has been teaching and performing professionally in this area ever since. As a performer Phil has worked with many different artists known both internationally and locally in a very wide range of styles, such as Stephen Pearcy (voice of the 80's Metal Band Ratt), top local big band The Jazz Police, Popular Las Vegas Entertainer "Zowie Bowie, and the late great blue legend Isaac Scott (voted into the Washington Blue Society Hall of Fame 1991). Recently Phil has been working with some of the most popular dance/show bands in the Northwest, including The Goods, That 80's Show, Galaxy 54, Vanity, and Gold Digger.
As an instructor Phil worked as a clinician and private instructor with Music Works Northwest and the Seattle Drum School. Currently Phil teaches privately in several different studios in the Seattle Puget Sound area.

I teach the Moeller Method. This is a system of technique which involves three basic wrist motions. The basics can be taught in one lesson, but the application takes a lifetime. I also teach all popular styles of contempory drum set, such as rock, jazz, funk, r&b, and many different latin styles. I work with students on reading both on snare drum and drum set and also get them playing along and transcribing with recordings of whatever style of music is of interest to them.

I started playing music around the Kansas City area twenty five years ago. I graduated from The University of Southern California with a degree in studio/jazz guitar (cum laude). While at USC, I received a merit scholarship and an award for professional leadership and service within her department. I also graduated with honors from Musicians Institute (GIT), of Hollywood, CA.
I have toured the U.S. and Canada playing venues such as The Portland Rose Festival, The Playboy Jazz Festival, The Santa Monica Twilight Concert Series, Irvine Lake Blues Festival,The Burnaby British Columbia Blues Festival and the Long Beach Blues Festival. The headliners at these events included Robben Ford, The Neville Brothers, and Johnny Winter.
I have released two solo CD's that have received first-rate reviews, as well as international airplay. After the second CD, I was biographied for AMG (All Music Guide) the internet's first source for music information. Here are excerpts from the AMG bio:

I incorporate a tailored curriculum to help people achieve their personal goals. Learning music is not a "one-size fits all" proposition. I can show you the songs that you want to play. I can also teach you music theory, technique, improvisation, reading and more. I adjust your course of study according to your areas of interest. If you are dying to learn a Led Zeppelin tune, or are planning on auditioning for a college level jazz guitar program, I can help you achieve these goals. I have taught hundreds of beginners along side more advanced students. My students have gone one to study music at GIT, Fullerton College, Pasadena City College, Berklee, Cal State LA, and USC.
Most of all, I am extremely patient. The ability to playing a musical instrument is measure on a calendar, not on a watch. I often work at a slow, systematic pace. I am generally very laid-back. On the other hand, if you learn very quickly, I can readily show you the skills you need to meet your goal. I have fast-tracked many individuals that were seeking admittance to an academic program.
My teaching studio is computer equipped. This allows me to incorporate computer software that enhances learning. One such program, Band in a Box, generates accompaniment for students so that they can work on their soloing skills. Another program can slow recorded music down so that the student can practice slowly with it. Also, I often give out play-along practice CDs for improved learning.
The aspect of performance is often not addressed by many. I am able to work with my guitar students while accompanying by performing live bass or drum parts, or work with bass students while playing the guitar or drum parts. This allows the student to understand his or her roll in an live band.

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar classes in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. More recently I've also started teaching online lessons via Skype and Google Helpouts with Take Lessons as well.
Philosophy of Learning
Lessons are generally in a relaxed setting and designed to work towards accomplishing student determined goals. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.
I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.
Lessons with small children are more focused on just having fun while developing a good musical foundation, but I prefer for them to have as much personal ownership of their lesson as possible like my older students as well.
I also hold events for all my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have the "Young Musicians Recital" every few months.
Adult students have a weekly "Jam Session Night" that they're welcome to come to whenever they'd like.
Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype as well as do a drop-in lesson through Google Helpouts.

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. Originally from Indiana, David has been teaching music in both the private and public school sectors for 12 years. Getting his start as a drumline instructor with only 4 students, David soon expanded his teaching to include both guitar and piano, which he studied under Frank Puzzulo (of Miles Davis' group) at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.
Upon graduating Ball State, David moved to Colorado to study jazz and classical music with Dr. Douglas Walter, an accomplished percussionist who is known for his versatility and multiple percussion talents. He also studied piano and guitar in his off time, jamming with several rock and jazz groups both in and out of school.
In 2006, David left the college scene with a Masters in Music and moved to Florida where he began his teaching career. In Florida, David taught roughly 70 students, ages 5 to 18, at Wewahitchka High School and Middle School. He was beloved by the town, helping out in the community as a local organist for the Presbyterian Church and as a frequent contributor to Wednesday night worship.
As wonderful as this time was, David gave up the gators and swamps to move back home to Indiana in 2007. Here, he took a job at Kokomo High School and Maple Crest Middle school where he resumed teaching students from 5th graders to seniors in all areas of music, including wind, strings/guitar and percussion. David established the first ever "rock and roll" class at the high school in 2008, a program that started with only 5 students and has ballooned to 38 in this current year! The class consisted of guitars, keyboards, bass and drums, all of which David can teach at a professional level.
Most recently, David graduated with his second Masters in Jazz Performance from DePaul University. He studied primarily with professor Ron Perillo, unquestionably the most innovative piano player in Chicago and with Bob Palmieri, a gifted guitarist. Having now graduated, David is devoting himself full time to teaching private students and looks very much forward to working with you!

Although David has a laid back personality and approach to life, he takes his job very seriously. He prides himself in not being the kind of teacher who is there simply to entertain and hope the student learns something in the process. Though you will most certainly have a good time, you should only take from him if you really want to become a great musician/player. Having been a highly qualified public school teacher for 5 years, David has more experience than most private teachers you can find. He knows what it takes to achieve greatness and he knows that most students, in the end, respect that more than a half hour "jam session."
David will tailor his curriculum to each student. Every student is expected to have a notebook with staff paper and a pencil at their lesson. Students will also be assigned a book to purchase (in some cases more than one) and he/she will progress through it at a pace appropriate to his or her level.
More than anything, what you will see in David's lessons is his love for music and teaching music. It is truly a special thing to be gifted in this art, and he believes that anyone who is willing to put in the time, the effort and the dedication needed will be rewarded and enriched in the end.
