About Me

For eight years now, Samantha has combined her love of music with her passion of cultivating an understanding and affinity to music in others by maintaining a private voice and piano studio for all ages and levels. As a performer herself, Samantha understands what it is like to be a student. Therefore, she makes it a goal to create a warm and nurturing environment while simultaneously challenging and daring her students to reach beyond what they think is possible.

A current voice student wrote this about Samantha:

"I love taking lessons with Samantha! She really has a lot of patience and works well with my voice. She doesn't give up on helping me reach notes, and makes me realize that I can do more with my voice than I would expect. She has developed my voice in the best way possible. I look forward to every lesson with her!"

In addition to teaching, Samantha maintains an active performance schedule as an opera singer. Described as being “silver-voiced,” Samantha most recently made her professional symphonic debut with Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra as Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni). Last September, Ms. G-Y performed the role of Yum-Yum (The Mikado) with Pacific Opera Project. She has also performed roles including Barbarina (Le nozze di Figaro), Papagena (Die Zauberflöte), Suor Genovieffa (Suor Angelica), Tatyana (Eugene Onegin), Fox (The Cunning Little Vixen), and Anne (A Little Night Music).

Samantha completed her Bachelor of Music Degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music and her Master of Music Degree from Temple University.

One of my strengths as a teacher is that I can easily cater and adjust to the needs of the student and their learning processes. I formulate my lesson plans according to the level, experience, and goals of the student. Each lesson is extremely personalized and highly individualized to maximize the potential success of the student during our time together.

Research has proven that performing music is one of the few activities that engages both the left and the right portions of the brain simultaneously. Towards this end, my teaching places equal importance on developing a strong technique all while nurturing creative instincts.

All ages and levels are welcomed!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I teach out of my beautiful home in Van Nuys where I have a 7-foot Schimmel grand piano.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I may be able to provide music for certain pieces. I expect students to have access to a piano or keyboard.

*** Specialties ***
*Teachers classified as a Student Favorite have taught a minimum of 25 lessons and have received the highest feedback rating from students.I am of the opinion that all students of singing should be initially taught a voice technique based upon the classical or bel canto style of singing. Once a firm technique is established, students can then branch off into other styles of singing such as musical theater or jazz. With my knowledge and skill of vocal pedagogy, I will be able to guide them into this transition as well as impart the correct tools that will insure years of healthy and enjoyable singing.

Repertoire/songs are chosen by the student and myself. I encourage students to be well-rounded and try different genres/styles and even give me a "wish list" of songs they would like to learn. I give guidelines on how much to practice and what to practice. I help train the student's eye and ear and work with harmonization/parts, if needed. About Me

My first priority is instilling a love for the arts into any student I teach. No matter what the skill level is, I want my students to love music and learning. I believe in setting the students up for success while also challenging them to be their best.
My experience as a classroom teacher is useful in helping me understand different types of students and cater to their individual needs and learning styles. I have experience teaching both private piano and voice, as well as experience in putting together recitals and stage shows. I have a degree in music from the University of Central Florida, which has allowed me to receive a great deal of musical education as well as hands-on experience in teaching methods.
A student of mine will not only learn techniques specific to their instrument, but also a more broad range of music theory and performance knowledge which will apply to any other musical endeavor they may wish to pursue.

*** Lesson Details ***
I offer a relaxed environment where students will be given new challenges and information without feeling pressured or stressed out. I want to make learning fun while also giving them a firm grasp on the techniques and practices. I use a variety of music books and series such as Piano Adventures, but I also like to find out what type of music the student is interested in playing and cater the curriculum to their needs. After 2 months of piano lessons, most of my students will know the basics of reading music/music theory and basic practice techniques. After 6 months, they will be able to read and play a piece of music on their own. Depending on the level of skill and hard work, students can progress quickly and they will love showing off their new skills to their friends and families.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide a keyboard if necessary, but prefer that the students have their own.

*** Specialties ***
"Head voice" singing for children, sight reading practices for piano, Broadway singing and performance, opera singing and performance
