About Me

I am a trumpet instructor with global experience and an approach to learning that is encompassing and fun for all ages. I was born in Taiwan and have studied in both Asia and the U.S., where I last earned my Master of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University. Students have described me as someone who is out going, someone who is laid back and fun and someone who likes to listen and communicate with my students. I have been teaching trumpet and piano since sophomore at college, in private one-on-one lessons or as a trumpet sectional coach at elementary schools or middle schools.

I believe that being an educator is about the communication and the relationship that exists between a teacher and a student. The art of being a good educator exists in the difference of “speaking to” a student versus “speaking with.” If you can build a good relationship with your student, the student will be more willing to listen and practice. My teaching style is one that is based on encouragement and creating a light-hearted atmosphere, although appropriate structure and pressure is applied with students performing or competing. My belief with learning music is that if you can foster their interest through the appropriate environment and encouragement, they will naturally spend time to practice; therefore, I like using a fun but structured environment to foster the student’s own interest to improve.

In my musical career, I had plenty of opportunities for performing when I was at Soochow University, including performing at the National Concert Hall each semester. I was admitted to the Soochow University Orchestra and Wind Ensemble as a principal trumpet since my junior year, which was when I had the chance to performed as solo trumpet in Pictures at an Exhibition at the well-known Musashino Academia Musicae during our concert tour in Japan. It was a great challenge for me both on developing the skills needed on the piccolo trumpet or training to be a soloist. In addition to having performed in orchestras and ensembles, I was also invited by composition teachers in school to perform their new works, which earned me a lot of experiences on interpreting contemporary works as well as playing chamber music.

Furthermore, not satisfied with the excellent performance as a soloist, I participated in any kinds of performances both on and off campus, including playing at the National Concert Hall and places around Taiwan on a regular basis within a semester. In 2004, when I was in college, I performed with the Soochow University Orchestra in a concert tour around the country; and in 2005 I was a member of the China Youth Band and performed with the group for its tour to the WASBE (World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles) in Singapore. In 2005 I was admitted to Taipei Symphonic Winds (TSW) and I once again performed with the National Taiwan Normal University Winds Band during its concert tour around the country. In 2006 I performed with the TSW during the concert tour to Macau and Guangzhou, China. In October, 2006 I held my own trumpet recital. In 2007 I performed Pictures at an Exhibition with Soochow University Orchestra at Musashino Academia Musicae. I also took the Soochow university concerto competition and placed into the final round. In 2008 I held my second trumpet recital; in the same year I formed a brass quintet and we were actively involved in the local community doing charity performances. We had regular performances at hospitals, nursing homes, orphanages and many of other places. In 2008 I was enlisted and performed in the Ministry of National Defense Symphony Orchestra as my military service. In 2010 I started my studies at Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University in my Master of Music degree.

My teaching style is one that is based on encouragement and creating a light-hearted atmosphere, although appropriate structure is applied and pressure exerted when needed. My belief with learning music is that if you can foster student’s interest through the appropriate environment and encouragement, they will naturally spend time to practice; therefore, I like using a fun but structured environment to foster the student’s own interest to improve.

For trumpet students, I basically focus on fundamental skills. Trumpet is a tough instrument to play: it only has three keys but has to play a wide register like other instruments. It is common for students to get bored with playing basic etudes, therefore I would award them by teaching pop songs or whatever pieces they like for meeting the week’s progress. I normally teach classical trumpet, marching trumpet and beginner’s jazz trumpet.

For piano students, I teach students to be familiar with the keys and intervals and also hands position for the beginners. In my view, it is very important to sing notes and play the piano at the same time because it benefits key memorization and fosters a students' sense of music. With the piano, I believe that building the proper fundamentals sets the proper pace for future growth and musical interest.

I would describe my method of teaching as using constant encouragement to get results from my student. As an example, for my younger students, I would use a score-based system where I award them with a sticker for meeting each week’s progress. You can trade in your stickers for various prizes. The style I specialize in is in the classics. Even though my focus has been on classical trumpet and classical piano, I also include pop music, because it appeals to a different audience who find it relevant and fun. My belief is that no matter what genre you choose to play, the foundation is the most important element to master first, so that’s where I focus on.

About Me

Growing up, I participated in every musical activity I could find: from choir to handbells, concert bands to jazz bands, and marching bands to rock bands. I love performing different types of music, but I decided to focus on classical clarinet performance in college. I graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2007 with a B.M. in Clarinet Performance. I also continued studying piano as a minor instrument at UIUC. Since then, I have revisited some of my former favorite pastimes: I teach handchime classes in schools, play in a rock band, and work for a jazz-oriented music/tutoring program.

Since graduating, I have performed several memorable concerts with highly skilled ensembles such as the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and Wheaton Municipal Band. CJP is a one of a kind jazz orchestra, and with them I have performed two very well-received concerts at the Auditorium Theatre and one outstanding performance at the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park in 2008, honoring Nelson Mandela. The orchestra blends two of my favorite styles of music: classical and jazz. The Wheaton Municipal Band is a more traditional band in the Chicago suburbs: playing marches, classical favorites, and pop medleys. Throughout the summer, the band gives free top-notch performances in Wheaton's Memorial Park. I have used my keyboard skills to perform at venues around Chicago (including Metro, Schuba's and Lincoln Hall) with Nick Miller and the Neighbors.

My diverse musical interests motivate me to teach. I enjoy sharing my love for music and artistic expression with students of all ages. I began teaching young clarinet students privately in 2000, while still in high school. After I began teaching group piano lessons in Chicago public schools in 2007, I decided to start teaching private piano lessons. Piano was the first instrument I took lessons on, and it has turned out to be my favorite instrument to teach beginners. I appreciate the freedom private lessons offer me as a teacher to tailor the lesson to the individual student. I understand there are many ways of learning and believe there are at least as many ways of teaching. My goal as a teacher is to pass on lessons of patience, creativity, appreciation, confidence and dedication to my students. I hope my students will apply these lessons to their musical studies and throughout all areas of their lives.

Music has been an incredibly powerful force in my life, and I love to bring it to others through instruction and performance. The best thing about music is it can touch anyone, even someone who has not studied it. However, I believe learning to playing an instrument will always deepen one's musical appreciation, while being a fun and rewarding experience.

I want my students to leave their lessons with skills and confidence that will help them in all areas of life. It is important to me that I give my students the ability to keep learning outside of our lessons. I believe that music is an art form that should be explored and can be enjoyed by all!

Working with beginners is my specialty. I understand that each student learns differently, and finding the right method for my students is very important to me.

Piano and clarinet lessons begin with an assessment of ability and setting of goals. I like to use the Faber and Faber piano series with my piano students. Clarinet method books depend on the experience level of the student. All lessons are a combination of theory, instrumental/performance technique, and ear training.

About Me

I began playing the piano at the ripe old age of 3 on a toy piano I received for Christmas. My parents began my formal lessons the following Spring with a private teacher who stayed with me until I graduated from High School. I was awarded a four year scholarship to the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago by my church to continue my studies. I added Voice to my studies there. I went on to study Orchestration, Conducting and Theory at I.S.N.U., Drama at C.T.C. upon returning from I.S.N.U and began to develop my Production Company in the early 70's. Since then I have produced numerous productions showcasing the talents of young and old while I pursued my Corporate career in Administration. My private students range from 5 years to 87 years although currently I specialize in teaching Seniors how to fill their retirement years with music. After running a Senior Community Center for several years, I realized a lack of artistic outlets for Seniors and began encouraging those who attended my Center to take up an instrument. I have had the joy of teaching many Seniors how to surprise their mates with beautiful music after only 6 months of lessons.

As for the younger generation, it is a proven fact that many children do better in school after learning to play an instrument especially the piano. Fine motor skills, hand and eye coordination and physical strength in hands and arms is also enhanced with the study and practice of the piano more so than any other instrument. Many piano students discover other talents and go on to participate in talent shows, school performances, and church pageants. The fun of being able to sit down and make music for your own enjoyment is almost as much fun as playing for the enjoyment of others. I look forward to continuing to share my love of music and the skills to play for yourself with students of all ages from Take lessons.

For Adults we discuss their goals and I come up with a plan that we can both agree on to get them there within reason. For children and all beginning students I start with the basics. We learn the keyboard, and the corresponding notes on the music staff. Treble Clef, and Bass Clef become new words in your vocabulary. After you learn your way around the keyboard and the Music Staff we start on the next important part of music, rhythm. I use a variety of percussion instruments and recorded music to teach the various time signatures depending on the age of the student. This makes it more relevant and enjoyable when they can relate to the music they listen to everyday and pick out the time signatures, By now you can read music even if slowly at first, and the addition of rhythm makes it more fun to play. This usually happens within the first six months for children, and the first three months with Adults. Practice is essential , and I recommend that each student practice for 1/2 hour increments up to 2 hours a day depending on their age. I also use scales to help improve dexterity and strengthen the fingers. Students are recorded to track their progress and for me to listen to their lessons and spot problems for correction. I also work with performers in perfecting their stage presence and audition skills. With today's opportunities to become overnight stars with just a video, you want to maximize your chances in any way you can. As a producer of many shows and concerts, I can help make that happen for you.

About Me

As far back as I am able to remember, I was always involved in sports and music. While in elementary school, I earned the President’s Award for Physical Fitness and practiced the piano each evening for my weekly lesson. In junior high school I was an active member of the choir and band (flute), a cheerleader for both the men’s football and basketball teams, and traveled extensively throughout Michigan competing as a gymnast for the school’s gymnastics team.
Although I earned varsity letters in tennis and gymnastics while in high school, I was encouraged by the school’s vocal music director to concentrate on excelling as a musician and to pursue a musical career. I took his advice and began to take piano lessons once again, as well as voice lessons. I enrolled in music theory, music history and choir during school hours, and involved myself in the high school’s productions of My Fair Lady and West Side Story after hours. As a vocal soloist, I received Superior ‘I’ ratings as a participant in the M.S.V.A. Solo and Ensemble Festival while as a piano soloist in 1974, I was awarded a monetary scholarship and a Certificate of Outstanding Achievement in Music after placing Second in the Senior High Division of the city’s Musicale Competition. During my senior year of high school I was accepted into the National Honor Society.
During my four years of schooling at Olivet College in Olivet, Michigan, I was involved primarily in the activities which related to my major field of study; Vocal Music Performance. In addition to being involved vocally with the stage productions of A Hand of Bridge, The Bartered Bride, Cosi Fan Tutte, and numerous choral ensembles, I also participated in various instrumental ensembles. I played harp for the college’s Orchestra as well as flute for its Wind Ensemble. As a Bachelor of Music major, I also took private classical guitar, harp, organ, voice, and piano lessons. Perhaps the most memorable experience associated with my education at Olivet College was the European Tour that I participated in with the Collegium Musicum Chorale the summer of 1977. We were privileged to sing Bach’s B Minor Mass with Neville Mariner conducting. My last year of college culminated with my senior voice recital and being awarded The Margaret Upton Conservatory of Music Award. In addition, I was awarded the Olivet College Concerto Award to which I performed Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 while accompanied by the Olivet College Orchestra.
Music has always been a part of my life, but being able to direct students to learn musically, watching these students mature musically, and involving myself with teaching these students the techniques, individual sensitivity and personal confidence associated with the aesthetic art of music, these are my intentions as a music professional; these are my goals as a music educator.

I am a very patient teacher and will motivate any student to be the best they can be with the moments we are given at each lesson. Instilling in each student a LOVE TO LEARN and ACHIEVE attitude with whatever instrument they prefer is my desire as a musician/teacher. I am honest and fair in evaluating each student’s progress.
A typical voice lesson begins with warm-ups, from correct breathing drills to vowel formations; scales to arpeggios. Once the instrument is ready to go, we get down to the previous week’s assigned songs and have some fun! Although classically trained, I will accommodate teaching what the student does so desire: whether a song from a Broadway Musical or a popular song. I feel it is important that the student set his or her own goals. That is why they continue to be engaged and enjoy each lesson. I am a true advocate of making sure I instruct each vocal student of mine about how the mechanism works, and about how one keeps the instrument healthy.

I am also familiar with the Piano Adventures method by Nancy and Randall Faber, the David Carr Glover Method, and the James Bastien Method. I will supplement these piano methods with any song the student may desire to learn. In addition, I have many volumes of Renaissance through Contemporary piano pieces that I fit to any student’s abilities. I have had particular good luck introducing students to “jazz” from Martha Mier’s Jazz, Rags and Blues series; students love to play these pieces!
I am a strong advocate of music lessons. Music can be an outlet for students who may be struggling academically and/or socially. Even students who come from non-musical families may discover a talent! We are surrounded by music everywhere we go. It (music) is the universal language; it’s the connection that binds the worlds’ cultures!

feedback rating from students.I hold a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, and would feel very comfortable teaching Voice lessons as I was taught: in the classical style. I do, however, supplement voice lessons with songs from Broadway Musicals (which I truly love), popular songs that a student may like, etc...I am a true believer to teach any voice student of mine about the health of the instrument and how the instrument works. I feel this is very important.

About Me

Originally from Indiana, David has been teaching music in both the private and public school sectors for 12 years. Getting his start as a drumline instructor with only 4 students, David soon expanded his teaching to include both guitar and piano, which he studied under Frank Puzzulo (of Miles Davis' group) at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.

Upon graduating Ball State, David moved to Colorado to study jazz and classical music with Dr. Douglas Walter, an accomplished percussionist who is known for his versatility and multiple percussion talents. He also studied piano and guitar in his off time, jamming with several rock and jazz groups both in and out of school.

In 2006, David left the college scene with a Masters in Music and moved to Florida where he began his teaching career. In Florida, David taught roughly 70 students, ages 5 to 18, at Wewahitchka High School and Middle School. He was beloved by the town, helping out in the community as a local organist for the Presbyterian Church and as a frequent contributor to Wednesday night worship.

As wonderful as this time was, David gave up the gators and swamps to move back home to Indiana in 2007. Here, he took a job at Kokomo High School and Maple Crest Middle school where he resumed teaching students from 5th graders to seniors in all areas of music, including wind, strings/guitar and percussion. David established the first ever "rock and roll" class at the high school in 2008, a program that started with only 5 students and has ballooned to 38 in this current year! The class consisted of guitars, keyboards, bass and drums, all of which David can teach at a professional level.

Most recently, David graduated with his second Masters in Jazz Performance from DePaul University. He studied primarily with professor Ron Perillo, unquestionably the most innovative piano player in Chicago and with Bob Palmieri, a gifted guitarist. Having now graduated, David is devoting himself full time to teaching private students and looks very much forward to working with you!

*** Lesson Details ***
Although David has a laid back personality and approach to life, he takes his job very seriously. He prides himself in not being the kind of teacher who is there simply to entertain and hope the student learns something in the process. Though you will most certainly have a good time, you should only take from him if you really want to become a great musician/player. Having been a highly qualified public school teacher for 5 years, David has more experience than most private teachers you can find. He knows what it takes to achieve greatness and he knows that most students, in the end, respect that more than a half hour "jam session."

David will tailor his curriculum to each student. Every student is expected to have a notebook with staff paper and a pencil at their lesson. Students will also be assigned a book to purchase (in some cases more than one) and he/she will progress through it at a pace appropriate to his or her level.

More than anything, what you will see in David's lessons is his love for music and teaching music. It is truly a special thing to be gifted in this art, and he believes that anyone who is willing to put in the time, the effort and the dedication needed will be rewarded and enriched in the end.

About Me

Daniel, a former faculty member of Columbia College in Chicago, is a studio and live performance singer and musician based in Chicago. His teaching and performing experience spans three decades, and includes expertise in the studies of voice, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and trumpet, along with music theory, arranging, and composing. He is a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate who holds a BA in Music Composition, and has attended graduate courses in education at Roosevelt University and DePaul University in Chicago. He has taught students of all ages at private studios, public school, and college.

Daniel is described by his students as a natural teacher. He prefers to be regarded as an advancing student, and takes the journey along with his students to guide them towards their goals with a friendly, positive, efficient and productive approach. He feels that music is within all of us, and a desire to learn is a sign of talent, so anyone can develop their musical abilities with methodical practice.

The musical journey for Daniel began at an early age with trumpet and piano studies which became a passion for him by the age of 14. He was the drum major of the high school marching band, and successfully completed a paid contract to arrange music for the high school jazz band which performed in a state beauty pageant. He began teaching privately after high school, and continued playing in bands, and composing original music. He formed a professional jazz ensemble under the name of the Chicago Jazz Players by the age of 22, and developed his arranging techniques while having it performed by an eighteen piece orchestra consisting of many great local artists. It was in this environment that he gained experience with brass, woodwinds, and rhythm instruments. He was granted a position at Columbia College as an instructor at age 29 where he taught theory, sight singing, musicianship, ear training, harmony, orchestration, and composition. He scored the music for several plays, and conducted his own pieces with Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Players. During those years he found himself playing the guitar and singing more than anything else. It was in 1995 that he focused on singing and playing the guitar with his rock band. He has produced several CD recordings of his original music in his own studio, and has helped produce local bands and artists. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.

Daniel exhibits patience and care with each student, and develops an individualized approach based on clear goals with practical procedures. Most beginners can expect to have a working knowledge of music notation and how it applies to their instrument within three months, and should be developing fluency in performing music that they enjoy within six months. Advancing students will enjoy the rewards that will follow by studying with an experienced teaching musician that will recognize strengths and weaknesses, and recommend proven techniques for personal musical development. Studying music should be fun, fulfilling, and in harmony with the needs and desires of the student, and this is key to the philosophy held by Daniel.
