Erin W. Chicago, IL

In my voice lessons, I strive for solid, healthy technique. We will focus very heavily on breathing, breath support, posture, resonance, clarity, pure tone, power and strength without straining, vocal range, and problem solving. Depending on your specific goals and needs, I will design vocal exercises for your particular voice.

My students range from raw beginners to professionals who record albums or perform live regularly. Some of them have even been in operas, concerts, and on Broadway!

About Erin

About Erin: After completing my Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance at North Park University in Chicago, I moved to NYC in 2010 to pursue my loves of music, acting, and education. During my time in NYC, I worked as a Teaching Artist through Wingspan Arts, acted in short films, and sang in concerts, operas, and musical theater productions around the city. Now, I am back in my hometown of Chicago to continue my work near friends and family! I have been teaching acting, modeling, voice, and piano to children and adults of all ages for the last seven years. My goal is to professionally fuse my passion for music, theater, and education while continuing to learn, grow, and share the beauty and magic of the arts with others.

In my free time I enjoy movies, board games, geeky TV ...

Erin is very talented all around. I came to her never taking a voice lesson before and was amazed at all the information she had to give me. Every lesson we would build and I learned so much in so little time. Unfortunately, I moved back to Florida and was unable to continue to take lessons with her :(. Wish I could have brought her with me ! She is excellent she even made me CD's to bring with me to continue my practice. I give her a 100 on a scale from 1 to 10.

Wonderful experience!

I started taking lessons with Erin a few months ago, after balking at the idea for a while because I'm shy. So glad! Erin is incredibly vibrant and motivating. Every lesson is a lot of fun, but also very productive. I can't wait to continue!

Heavy duty repertoire work is part of opera lessons. Usually I find that opera students enter the studio with a great deal of vocal proficiency, having taken lessons previously, but if vocal issues are present, we will back track to clear those up while working on easier pieces first. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels, and I can't wait to meet you!

About Penny

ABOUT PENNY R.

I graduated from college in Virginia with a Bachelor of Music Education degree as a voice major, and minored in piano and violin. My teaching certificate was for vocal, instrumental and general music, grades K - 12, and I graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Graduate school brought me to Indiana, where I earned a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance. Migrating up to the Chicago area from there, I taught at a private music school (voice and small ensembles, as well as many faculty performances) before staying at home to raise our children, and teaching voice lessons privately in my Studio. After 30 years of teaching, I'm still at it, and I still love it!

I am a Permanent Professional member of Music Teacher's National Association (MTNA), Illinois State Music ...

I took lessons with Penny for about 4 years and it was the best thing I could have done for my vocal development. I have since moved to the west coast and am still sad, every week, that we don't have our lessons. My vocal technique and confidence increased dramatically because of our lessons.

Penny is gentle and kind, extremely focused, and I found her method of teaching worked very well for me. She is very meticulous, always observing quietly and adjusting the message so that you can absorb what you are ready for. She helps you to feel the sounds you are creating, to explore your vocal abilities in a safe way, pushing gently but never too much.

If you are lucky enough to be close to Penny, do try her classes!

In my experience of Penny this afternoon as Giuseppe's wife bringing our4 year old daughter, it was disappointing. I do believe these other reviews are probably accurate in Penny being a great teacher. But after my daughter left she was quite discouraged to sing. Penny is not good with young children which I'm surprised considering she is a Pre K teacher. My daughter was excited and willing to learn this afternoon only to be scared and not want to ever sing again. As a parent who paid for a lesson the last thing I ever expect from a professional is discouraging a child. To have my daughter in tears and not wanting to sing for her dad anymore is heart breaking. I may not be a professional teacher but what I do know talking about what a child should not do should not be discussed in front if child to have them discouraged. Children don't hear what they should do as much as they hear what they shouldn't. In my recommendation to any parent if your child is 10 or younger Penny is not the teacher for her. Quite frankly I don't want her teaching my child period.

Mrs. Penny R. is a fabulous vocal instructor! This is my fifth year taking lessons with her and my singing has vastly improved during this time. She is very professional and takes the success of her students seriously. She challenges me to sing as well as I can and gives many helpful tips for improvement, but in the kindest possible way. I would recommend her to people at all levels looking to improve their vocal skills.

Bel canto instruction and technique with a clear outline of warm up techniques using Kristin Linklater techniques. I am a classically trained singer, familiar with the repertoire, as well as diction in Italian, French, German and Latin. The goal is utter freedom and beauty of the voice, enabling you to express the scope of contemporary and classical composers.

About Wendy

I am a professional singer, songwriter and actor working in the Chicago area for many years. I have a B.F.A. in Theater/Voice from The University of Kansas and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. I've been teaching private vocal instruction since 2003: I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, a unique and supportive venue for singer's to become more comfortable performing before an audience. I also instruct workshops for vocal technique and performance. For the past 10 years I was the lead singer for The Red Apples, an acoustic roots band that performs an eclectic mix of rock, swing, blues, country and jazz. Professional, Effective, and Challenging Lessons

Wendy is probably the most professional and talented voice teacher I have worked with in my time singing. She was able to quickly diagnose and help me begin to address difficulties I was having, but was also very proactive in helping me find repetoire that I enjoyed and that meshed well with my voice and my musical interests. She is extremely knowledgeable about the mechanics of singing, as well as the interpretation of song, and really challenged me to think through my singing in a way I hadn't before. Thanks!

I strongly recommend Ms. Parman for those looking to enjoy the process while making real gains.

Having taken both group and private lessons with Wendy Parman, I believe that Ms. Parman is an invaluable voice coach to casual and professional singers alike. She knows how to bring out the talent in her clients, and will helps bring out the best in each student through very personalized instruction. Along with a degree in music and vast performing experience, she brings sensitivity towards her clients as she individuates each lesson.

Through the lessons and workshops with Ms. Parman, I have seen a great improvement in my singing voice, the deepening of greater stage presence with ease, and I have grown in my confidence as a singer. She quickly got to know my vocal range and ability and handpicked songs and exercises that helped me develop. I got expert advice on expanding my vocal range and left each lesson with solid techniques I could use to practice on my own. She challenged me to push through what was in my way and I got results.

As her student, I have performing opportunities as she organized two events per month in a casual, supportive yet professional setting. (Singer’s Salon & Singer’s Spotlight) How else can you practice before a live audience and stretch in this area?!

I found her to be flexible with days and times for our lessons, as my schedule changes from month to month. And thankfully, she was willing to travel to my house or at other times we met in her studio.

I strongly recommend Ms. Parman for those looking to enjoy the process while making real gains!!

I am currently studying opera at the Chicago College of Performing Arts and have extensive operatic training. I teach an open throat technique (appoggio) that allows the singer to sing with freedom, and access their entire range evenly. I also work with students to develop style, interpretation, languages, and acting ability.

About Benjamin

My expansive breadth of interests has led me through years of experience in the arts and natural sciences. I'm a voice instructor, math tutor, and biology teacher. Now, I'm pursuing a career in opera and vocal performance.

I have extensively studied vocal performance and opera for many years and continue to add to my own technique. I have been in many operas and musical theater productions. I am currently performing in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat at the Booth Tarkington Theatre. I was a finalist in the MasterWorks Festival concerto competition. I have studied other vocal genres, such as jazz and pop. I have administered vocal lessons to every voice type at all different levels. I use the appoggio technique of breathing and believe all singing should be ...

Ben is a great teacher and great guy. Since I had a musical background and training, I was searching for a specific type of teacher that would help me improve my singing but in a specific style (singer-songwriter/r&b). Ben demonstrated a great deal of knowledge not only in technical instruction, but with the elements singers use in that specific style to be successful. That is not a skill everyone would have. He shows a thirst for learning more to make himself and his students better. I have already shown big improvements over a few months. So, if you are looking for a versatile teacher who cares a lot about seeing you improve, he's your guy.

I have never had any interest in singing beyond that which I do in my car, but I do now!
I agreed to take a lesson from Ben purely to see what range of voice I had. I planned on taking only one lesson, simply for this reason. As Ben had me doing the exercises, I realized that I had quite a bit of potential I never even dreamed I would have. He unlocked things in my voice I never knew I had. I learnt so much from that one lesson and had such a truly fun time, I decided I would continue.
I have taken six lessons now and I see huge improvements in my singing. When I sing for fun in the car, I now know how to "tame" my voice, I now understand the mechanics of singing styles and I understand how to breathe properly.
Each lesson I learn something new and though I tend to sometimes forget proper technique, Ben is always patient with me and, in a clear and concise way, shows me what I am doing wrong. He has a very good way of explaining things and really tries to unlock all my potential. Every visit I walk away happy and excited and with a lighter step. I feel my confidence, in general, has increased through these lessons. I fully recommend Ben to anyone wanting to learn what they are capable of with their voice...I've learned everyone is capable of singing. I recommend even one lesson with Ben to learn some basics and see what your vocal range is...and from there, see if you don't want to continue :)
