About Me

I am delighted to be a part of the TakeLessons team here in Portland. I have recently retired from a career in elementary education employed as a visual arts instructor. In addition to my public school career I have also given private piano lessons for the last thirteen years. I graduated from the University of Idaho in 1991 with a bachelors degree in education with a minor in music.

While I have been classically trained, my goal is to provide a strong background in music theory, technique, and performance, which will allow all students to successfully pursue interests in all genres of music. Creating individualized instruction for each student is an important means of nurturing a successful and motivated pianist at every level. I use a broad range of materials based on student interest and abilities with a core curriculum built upon Hanon, Alfred, and Faber and Faber method books. I look forward to the opportunity to be part of your many successes in the world of piano music.

About Me

I harness years of music teaching in diverse settings (including four years' private studio plus three years as a choral director and two years as a music instructor with homeless youth) for a diverse studio meeting real artistic needs. I also am a fluent and experienced Spanish tutor, teacher, and interpreter and offer effective, individualized Spanish tutoring at your convenience.

Highlights from my career include:

* Professional singing and playing experience in diverse settings (opera stages, pubs, churches, you name it)

* Intensive and well-rounded musical training at renowned Brigham Young University in clarinet and voice (earned BM in vocal performance, 2007), including coursework in piano/keyboard, music theory, pedagogy.

* Mental health, domestic violence, and disabilities direct service work as an advocate, caseworker, support group facilitator, and center director (2007-2012). Broad yet intensive experience in social services enables holistic and effective guidance with the huge array of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual issues and nuances that affect musical development and performance (bodily tension, working through nerves, motivation, stress relief techniques, goal-setting, life changes and music, disorders support, etc.)... Basically, a life music coach at your beckon call, if that is what you need.

I offer a well-rounded curriculum and dynamic approach to lessons that center around what you, the student, need and want. I am as flexible or as hard-nosed as you need me to be, as I believe musical development depends upon a fluid, mutually response teacher-student relationship. I know and teach curriculum across diverse styles and genres and can adapt and weave in student interests, themes, songs, or life goals into our practice as necessary and appropriate.

About Me

I started learning piano as a child, but it was in high school that I realized I really wanted to pursue playing keyboards, because it allowed me a way to express myself. I was hooked. Later on I attended Mt. Hood Community College, played keyboards and sang in choirs and vocal jazz. After graduating on the President's List with an Associates Degree in Special Studies Music, I directed the college Gospel Ensemble for two years before working full-time at a large local church, where I was a Music Director, Worship Leader, and keyboard player. In addition to vocal and keyboard work, I enjoyed directing large and small choirs and ensembles, band directing, orchestra conducting, and arranging many styles of music. It is exciting to experience what can happen when people work together musically--the whole becomes even greater than the sum of the parts!

I've been teaching piano for 20+ years now, and I love partnering with students to help them grow musically and realize their dreams. Some of my students have gone on to be professionals or teachers, and some are playing the music they love with their friends. Others are playing in their churches or in bands, and some play simply for personal enjoyment.

If we get the opportunity to work together, you (or your child) will discover that I am patient and encouraging. My desire is to bring your musical goals into focus through education and creative participation.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe piano instruction should be fun and casual, yet challenging and inspiring. In our lessons, you'll learn proper technique, sight-reading, improvising, and the music theory behind it. I utilize popular piano methods and contribute additional resources, and I design lessons to help you reach your music goals, whether your dream is to play with others, write your own music, or play your favorites for personal enjoyment. You'll explore many music genres, from classical to rock to jazz, including a large dose of your preferred styles. If you play an electronic keyboard, we'll incorporate features of your instrument to increase your rhythm and song-writing skills. Aspiring songwriters can learn skills like chart writing and computer notation. You'll learn how technology--even your smart phone--can help!

The student is responsible to purchase required books--usually lesson and theory, and occasionally a recital book. These usually cost between 5 and 7 dollars each and can be purchased locally. Bring lined paper with you for your lesson notes. I'll supply staff paper, music and any additional lesson materials, as needed. I will encourage you to purchase a metronome (the musician's friend) if you do not have an instrument with rhythms or metronome.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I teach both at students' homes (on your instrument) or at my home, where I have a Yamaha CP70 electric grand piano. The lessons are in the front living room, where seating is available and parents are welcome to observe the lesson. I have a laptop with Sibelius Notation and YouTube at the ready, as well as a mic, mixer and speakers, should they be needed. There may even be a studio cat nearby to inspire you!

*** Travel Equipment ***
If lessons are at your home, it is important that you have a practice instrument, which we will use in our lessons. If you need to purchase a piano or are exploring the world of electronic keyboards, I can help you with the many choices available and recommend instruments in your price range. I can also help you become familiar with your keyboard and those features that will be useful to you.

*** Specialties ***
For individual lessons, I prefer using the Alfred Method (beginning through intermediate), and have also used the Bastien method, and some others. I teach both sight-reading and/or improvisational skills, along with musical theory, according to the student's needs and goals. I'm comfortable in multiple styles (classical, pop, rock, folk, some jazz and blues).

About Me

Bonnie develops your ear by engaging your critical listening skills each time you play through a song. She engages your body by providing specific exercises to assist in making the best sound possible. Her lessons inspire you to prepare throughout the week and soar to a new level of knowledge during lessons. No matter your other goals for music lessons, her goal is to enable you to sing your soul through the medium of fingers flying over keys or voice lifted in melody.

Lessons begin with a warm-up and technical exercises (don't worry, they're fun!) and a review of the previous week's assignments and practice results or struggles. Then comes the exciting part: rehearsing the musical selections we've chosen for you to work on! Voice students are expected to rehearse 2-3 pieces of music in a minimum of 2 languages (English and one additional) while Piano and Flute students will work through method books and then branch out into their repertoire. As instrumental works are typically longer, these students usually study one piece of music at a time.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The studio includes basic recording equipment and is equipped with a piano, music stand, and a variety of music books. Parking is free and available on the street or in the driveway. Bonnie's home studio also has a cat in the home, so please alert her if you are allergic or need special accommodations.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Voice and piano students must provide a piano or keyboard. Voice and flute students should provide a music stand. Students' homes must have a quiet area for the lesson with hard-backed chairs and minimize distractions (TV sound, pets, siblings, etc). All students are expected to purchase 1-3 books of music, depending on their instrument of study, and one sheet music binder. All students are to bring a pencil with working eraser and a water bottle to lessons.

Beginners are my forte! Whether you are looking for a teacher for your child or yourself, my lessons break down the complex art of music into easily-comprehended segments. At the end of each lesson, you will know what to focus on during practice sessions, leading to a successful week of study. Questions encouraged during lessons, and if a question comes up during practice I can be reached by email, too!

Regular lessons held during the school year cover basic information such as pitch, rhythm, breathing, confidence building, and composition. For some other ideas, check out the books I use:
For piano, I highly recommend the Alfred's Basic library. With its combination of theory, aural skills, and technical exercises it has broad applications to all student ages and abilities. For young students, Alfred's Basic offers fun examples and alliterations which appeal to and capture the attention of children. Adults will find Alfred's All-In-One moves at a pace appropriate for higher-level thinkers while getting those fingers coordinated at the same time.
The primary focus for voice students is learning how to utilize the breath and train the ear to produce beautiful, balanced tone. A variety of books (many in the Schirmer or Hal Leonard series) are used to provide musical selections which challenge the student in rhythm, phrase, breath, and pronunciation. I require all voice students to sing in English and one other language, while experienced students will study and perform in many languages. Voice students are highly recommended to take piano lessons as well or to have a previous piano background in order to accompany themselves in practice and develop further theory skills.

She received her Bachelor's degree in Music Instruction at the Lithuanian National Academy of music in Kaunas and her Master Degree in pedagogy from the Academy of Lithuania. After 10 years of teaching music in Europe, she moved to US and has been teaching in Berkeley CA since 2005. She is a member of the Music Teachers Associations of Oregon and California

*** Lesson Details ***
I provide every student with different pieces according to his/her age and individual abilities. Each student has a different learning speed and level of enthusiasm which needs to be taken into account. With young children I find it helpful to integrate games, stories and pictures to enliven the lesson. I try not to be too strict, but I expect my students to practice at home and not to miss lessons. I use a number of books and methods. After 3 to 6 months a young student will have learned at least 12 notes on the staff, to sight-read easy pieces, to understand count rhythm values, and to play simple songs .

About Me

I have taken piano lessons for the past 17 years and have been teaching for the last 5. While working on my Bachelor of Arts in Music at Willamette University, I decided to give piano lessons during the summer and found it to be an exciting way to connect with new people of all ages, give them a skill that they can use for the rest of their life, and grow as a pianist myself. Now that I have graduated, I am focusing on teaching more full time, and could not be more thrilled about it. Now giving Skype lessons!

*** Lesson Details ***
Having had the experience of putting in a lot of practice during the week, only to be too tense and nervous during my lesson to play well, I try to make my lessons a place where students can feel calm and relaxed. I do this by implementing humor into the lessons, and letting students know that it's not the end of the world if they're hitting a few wrong notes. At the same time, it is important for students to make progress. If a student is not making progress from week to week, it means that they are either playing something too difficult or are not practicing enough. Either way, it is my responsibility to remedy the situation.

I expect my students to have a piano. While I will not pay for their lesson books, I can buy the book for them as long as I am reimbursed.

I incorporate some Alexander technique into my teaching. I've found that a higher body awareness helps people to relax and feel more comfortable. I am most comfortable teaching classical music.
