About Me

I have been studying drum set for 13 years. In my senior year of high school I attended the Merit School of Music studying with percussionist Doug Brush. I went on to attend Roosevelt University’s Music Conservatory, studying classical percussion under percussionist Ed Harris and then transferred to Columbia College where I was able to study with drummer’s Frank Donaldson and Tom Hipskind, drummer/percussionist Ruben Alvarez, and drummer/vibraphonist Jarrett Hicks. Through my experiences and education I was able to hone my skills and solidify my musicianship. Studying with such a variety of drummers allowed me to pick up different perspectives and teaching styles which I have implemented into my own practice and teaching. I received my Bachelor of the Arts in Music degree Fall of 2009.

I have been performing professionally since the age of 17 all around the Chicagoland area and have played a variety of styles ranging from straight ahead and Latin jazz, to rock, pop, funk and R&B. I currently work as a jobbing musician and session artist working with several Chicago artists and ensembles. Some notable performance venues that I have performed in are: The taste of Chicago, The Harris Bank Theater, The Goodman theater, The Green Mill, and Andy's Jazz club, among many others.

As an educator I have taught privately for 5 years and almost 2 years through TakeLessons. I was the percussion instructor for the Pilsen School for the arts and have been working with education arts programs such as Enlace in Little Village, the Urban Gateways program as a touring artist, and the Gallery 37 program.

*** Lesson Details ***
I like to set specific goals for a student in order to help establish the foundations necessary to become proficient as a drummer or percussionist. However, I also like to cater lessons to the students specific goals. Whether the goal is playing in a garage band, working through concert band or drum line repertoire, or beginning the journey towards becoming a professional musician, I set lessons based on these goals and through the music styles the student prefers to focus on.

For every student I like to focus on creating a solid foundation of technique, coordination, independence, and musicianship. Creating an understanding of rhythm that should not only be physical, but mental as well. Reading music is key towards understanding rhythm, and towards continuing a students education while the teacher is not present. I do this through specific exercises that I have come across in my career that have helped me improve my own playing at different stages of my development. I also stress making practice fun through the use of simulated performance. Play along tracks help the student apply what they have learned in a performance setting without the fear and nervousness involved with a recital or concert.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio in the Basement containing:
A Tama Rockstar Fusion 5 piece kit
A Grestch Catalina Bop Kit 4 piece
DW practice pad drum set
An array of Snares in varied sizes
An Array of Cymbals in Varied sizes and models (K customs, etc)
LP Classic II series congas (Quinto and Conga)
LP Classic II series Bongos
PA System

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring a light practice pad drum set, practice pads, books and exercises. I can bring a snare, congas, bongos, and auxiliary percussion if the lesson requires. I can also bring a laptop with play-along tracks and 2 sets of noise reducing headphones. If a student is studying drum set, congas, or bongos, I would expect them to own their own instrument for practice purposes.

About Me

I have been working as a freelance musician and private instructor in Chicago for fifteen years. During this time I have been hired to perform Jazz, Rock, R/B, and world music. As an instructor I have maintained a studio of five to twenty students on a weekly basis. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Percussion Performance, and a Master of Music degree from De Paul University in Jazz Studies.

*** Lesson Details ***
With committed weekly practice there are no limits to a student's potential. I like to use the term guide to describe my teaching style. In a relaxed atmosphere, the student and I are working together to advance their musical goals. Sometimes goals are reached quickly, more often we need more time and repetition to advance. The mind learns quicker than the body, so focused practice will help train the body and bring it to the mind's level.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Finished Basement studio: drum set, snare drum, small mallet, xylophone and electric piano, room for parents to sit in on lesson

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student should provide sticks and mallets and purchase a book that we will work out of weekly.

*** Specialties ***
I feel comfortable teaching all levels of percussion. I have experience teaching a variety of styles Jazz, rock, classical, and world.

David B. Chicago, IL

Bass Guitar, Clarinet, Drum, Flute, Guitar, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Percussion, Piano, Songwriting

About Me

Originally from Indiana, David has been teaching music in both the private and public school sectors for 12 years. Getting his start as a drumline instructor with only 4 students, David soon expanded his teaching to include both guitar and piano, which he studied under Frank Puzzulo (of Miles Davis' group) at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.

Upon graduating Ball State, David moved to Colorado to study jazz and classical music with Dr. Douglas Walter, an accomplished percussionist who is known for his versatility and multiple percussion talents. He also studied piano and guitar in his off time, jamming with several rock and jazz groups both in and out of school.

In 2006, David left the college scene with a Masters in Music and moved to Florida where he began his teaching career. In Florida, David taught roughly 70 students, ages 5 to 18, at Wewahitchka High School and Middle School. He was beloved by the town, helping out in the community as a local organist for the Presbyterian Church and as a frequent contributor to Wednesday night worship.

As wonderful as this time was, David gave up the gators and swamps to move back home to Indiana in 2007. Here, he took a job at Kokomo High School and Maple Crest Middle school where he resumed teaching students from 5th graders to seniors in all areas of music, including wind, strings/guitar and percussion. David established the first ever "rock and roll" class at the high school in 2008, a program that started with only 5 students and has ballooned to 38 in this current year! The class consisted of guitars, keyboards, bass and drums, all of which David can teach at a professional level.

Most recently, David graduated with his second Masters in Jazz Performance from DePaul University. He studied primarily with professor Ron Perillo, unquestionably the most innovative piano player in Chicago and with Bob Palmieri, a gifted guitarist. Having now graduated, David is devoting himself full time to teaching private students and looks very much forward to working with you!

*** Lesson Details ***
Although David has a laid back personality and approach to life, he takes his job very seriously. He prides himself in not being the kind of teacher who is there simply to entertain and hope the student learns something in the process. Though you will most certainly have a good time, you should only take from him if you really want to become a great musician/player. Having been a highly qualified public school teacher for 5 years, David has more experience than most private teachers you can find. He knows what it takes to achieve greatness and he knows that most students, in the end, respect that more than a half hour "jam session."

David will tailor his curriculum to each student. Every student is expected to have a notebook with staff paper and a pencil at their lesson. Students will also be assigned a book to purchase (in some cases more than one) and he/she will progress through it at a pace appropriate to his or her level.

More than anything, what you will see in David's lessons is his love for music and teaching music. It is truly a special thing to be gifted in this art, and he believes that anyone who is willing to put in the time, the effort and the dedication needed will be rewarded and enriched in the end.

David is also available for online lessons via Skype! He loves taking advantage of this modern technology in his lessons and is happy to take on new students in this format.

*** Studio Equipment ***
He has a fully weighted digital piano, electronic keyboard, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, clarinet, flute and various percussion equipment in a room completely devoted to music. Can accommodate seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring my own guitar/bass, but any drum lessons or piano lessons would require the student to have the necessary instrument at home.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in non-wind instruments, especially drums, percussion, bass guitar, piano and rock guitar. I consider myself extremely versatile with various styles and genres. Piano lessons are taught on a wonderful, fully weighted 88 key keyboard. I apply several teaching methods to reach as many kids as possible, with a focus on hands-on learning.

About Me

I have been playing music for 19 years. After majoring in music at College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn IL, I went to step up my level of study at the Percussion Institute of Technology (P.I.T.) at Musician's Institute in Hollywood, CA in 2001.

Moving back to Chicago after L.A. in 2002 proved to be the right move as this is when I began my teaching career. With over 10 years of private music instruction experience, I have worked with Hix Brothers Music, Naperville Music, Roselle Music, Streamwood Park District, After School Enrichment Solutions, Band For Today, and also maintain a private clientele. Well into a couple thousand lessons taught, students have stayed with me for up to 7 years. You, the student, will gain all the experience I have gained from my 19 years of study, performance, and instruction.

Performing with various bands in the 2000's, I pinpointed my style and mastered my technique that gave me many performance opportunities regionally and nationally, noting most current act U2 tribute Vertigo USA.

I am co-founder of the music licensing company Blue Shade Music, co-writing with astute musicians in the Chicago area for three publishing companies in New York and California.

With national and international touring experience, I was featured in an exclusive interview for Online Drummer in August of 2011 sharing my knowledge and experience of music and drums.

Thank you for reading, and I hope to have a fun and educational time with you!

About Me

Hello! So glad you've taken a moment to check out my page. I am a graduate of VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois, having received a Bachelor of Music Education degree. I have been teaching full-time for two years, and while I enjoy what I do in the school setting, nothing quite satisfies me as much as helping others one-on-one; it's just more personal and meaningful to me! I am a drummer and percussionist by trade, but I also have solid basic facility on piano and guitar. As far as my experiences go, I have performed in the following types of ensembles:

-Symphonic band
-Wind ensemble
-Philharmonic orchestra
-Percussion ensemble
-Jazz, ska, rock, and brass bands
-WGI (Winter Guard International)
-DCI (Drum Corps International)

I have also completed two recitals, with audio and video footage available to you upon request. My performances with the above groups have taken me around the country, as well as allowed me to perform in front of hundreds of active music educators at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, which is an international event. Outside of teaching professionally, I have instructed several drumlines and front ensembles for marching bands, and composed and arranged music for some of them. I am still currently working in the field, between teaching privately and touring with a rock band. While in this band, I have also amassed many hours of studio time, so I have become familiar with what is expected out of today's drummer.

I am currently located in Lincoln Square on the north side of Chicago, and am looking to keep my lessons local to the city. I am willing to travel to teach, but in that case, you must have your own drum set. Otherwise, I will happily welcome anyone into my home to get some work done! I live in a very accessible area, and there is a great musical culture around me that really spurs me to keep working and growing, both as a teacher and a musician.

Thank you SO much for taking the time to read up about me, and I am very much looking forward to hearing from you!

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson with me consists of a few minutes of small talk, person to person, just to get to know one another and create a very comfortable atmosphere for us to learn and work together. I like to always start with reviewing what was last assigned, to allow my students to start with something that is fresh in their minds, and connect that material to new concepts in a smooth, exciting fashion. In the first lesson, time is spent carefully choosing goals and designing the best course of action to reach them. From there, in addition to what I feel my students need to address in our lessons, I always want them to have some input as to what comes next, so that the course of our lessons flow in a manner that helps students achieve their goals with me always there to guide them. I teach out of my home, and am also willing to travel for lessons, provided students are within a certain distance.
