beginner and intermediate bass lessons
I have been a professional musician and teacher all my adult life. Music is my passion and has always been how I make a living. I teach piano/keyboards, guitar, voice, bass and ukulele. I studied classical piano at SUNY at Buffalo and I initially learned to play guitar and singing on my own. Years later I studied voice and guitar with great professional instructors. I am familiar with different ways of learning music: from very structured and traditional methods (that we use in classical music) to more improvisational and "by ear" approaches as we often do in popular music. This helps me tailor my music teaching specifically to each student based on his/her musical preferences, abilities and learning style. I can teach all styles of music including: Pop, Rock, Blues, Country, Bluegrass, ...
I treat the bass as a rhythmic instrument first, and then a melodic instrument. Learning to lock in with a drummer is essential for a bassist and I can literally accompany that process. If you'd like to learn to play danceable music on the bass guitar, I'm your man. I can also teach you to read charts (ie:jazz real book charts).
I just completed my Music BA at CU Boulder. I have played in several different ensembles on a variety of instuments including Bass, Drums, Guitar, Piano, Ukulele and Voice. My classical training in combination with my experience as a song writer, multi-instrumentalist and band leader gives me a uniquely well-rounded teaching style. I aim to teach and inspire students to use music as a platform for learning important skills such as diligent practice, cognitive flexibilty, and creative expression. I grew up in Boulder and Hawaii where I gained a love for island music, Reggae, Highlife Music, Jazz and Funk. I am currently in a band called "Isa and Joe Alan" which plays original music in all these styles. I am also a professional face painter, juggler and balloon twister, and love yoga, ...

I have been playing lead guitar since 2004 (bass guitar and drums since 2006) and have invested my life into the creative process. Over the said amount of time, I have been applying my technique to genres such as heavy metal, jazz, blues, funk, classical, and anything in between. I have written over 30 original works which include guitar, bass, drum, and vocal scores. Once the work is completed, I would proceed to creatively construct in a one-on-one or group scenario. I have also been student teacher and guitarist for the Standley Lake High School jazz band. The jazz band at Standley Lake regularly played clinics in which professional jazz musician's would critique the group on a particular set. This would include breaking it down to the single musician's parts and pin pointing strengths
I've played electric bass since I was in 7th grade in just about every setting you can think of. I can help you with just about anything you'd like to do, from walking bass lines to groove and advanced techniques such as sweeping and tapping. For beginning students I focus on getting good tone, practical knowledge of the fretboard in lower positions, and learning basic basslines for music of the student's preference. At the intermediate level I incorporate a little music theory, jazz chord symbol nomenclature, and technically we focus on improvising, writing basslines, and working on more advanced pieces in the student's prefered style of music. At advanced levels the direction depends on which direction the student wants to go in, whether that be deeper studies in improvisation and theory or more technical things such as rock, metal, or solo-style bass playing with techniques such as slap, tap, and chords. As always, however, I believe that the student's musical interests should
Hi! I'm currently a Music Education Student at CU Boulder specializing in strings. My primary instruments are double bass and electric bass and I gig often in many different ensembles from Jazz combos to rock and experimental electronic groups. I live for music, and I've been teaching since I was a sophomore in high school. I believe deeply in the power of music to enrich and fulfill lives and that participating in the creation of it is not only fun but can allow us to express our innermost selves. I look forward to helping you on your path, whether you are a high school student preparing All-State and College auditions, have a young child that could benefit from learning an instrument, or are an adult who always wanted--yet were never quite able--to learn how to play music. *** Travel
I'm a heavy handed bass player having mimicked my style after Steve Harris of Iron Maiden. Rock and Metal styled bass is what I focus on, because that's my passion.
The lessons are always about what you wish to learn. I want to help you reach your goals and will create a specific lesson plan just for you.
Here is a quick overview of what can/will be covered in lessons:
Basics such as how to hold your bass, how to properly fret a note, how to do hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, and even finger-tapping.
Scales, chords, arpeggios, the names of strings, the names of your notes, how and why certain scales and chords go together, rhythm, strumming, chord theory, etc. Any time you wish to learn a song you enjoy we will cover that as well.
The most important thing to me in giving you lessons is that you are enjoying the time learning the instrument.
You, the student, are always the priority in my lessons. Every student receives material specifically designed to fit their interests, needs, skill level, and pace.
