I emphasize the importance of music theory, technique and aural skills. If you would like to know more about my personal experience, keep reading my biography below!

I have a Music degree from Wayne State University, with a concentration in jazz studies, where I focused on performance and writing; including composition, arranging and orchestration. I play in several pop, rock and jazz combos. Most of them playing in fine area restaurants and venues. I have played large festivals, such as Rothbury festival in Michigan, and have open shows for several prominent rock artists. At Wayne State University, I earned a position in the Lab 1 big band playing upright bass, which is the highest ensemble position, and got to play with several great jazz faculty and guest artists through WSU programs. I have played in several musicals and theatric shows, and am a freelance bassist, with good sight reading ability.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lesson curriculum is basically tailored to each student individually. I like to focus on the goals and needs of each student. I think structure is a very important part of playing any instrument, and like to use method books for theory and technique. I believe any student can do well in a program like this, in a relatively short time, especially with good practice!

Learning to play from a DVD or the internet can not properly teach a beginner bass player, because there has to be student/teacher interaction, one has to already know how to play in order for a DVD to be effective, and truly believe one will still need an instructor. I enjoy teaching and playing bass. i teach (4 to 6 string), which includes learning to read bass clef notes, scales, chords, keys signatures and time on the music staff, etc., etc., i can teach tab also. i like to teach beginners to give them the correct and formal fingering techniques, then later if they like, they can go all willy nilly. i get satisfactory results. i like using small i's

*** Lesson Details ***
Depending on the student's current level of understanding music and playing bass, i start with the healthy way to play bass, traditional left hand and right hand techniques, learning exercises, scales, chords, ear training for how to find the bass part in songs, music theory including how to read music, then different styles of playing bass including thump and pluck, now known as slap bass, hammer and tap, harmonics, and most of all i make it fun. With practice you will know how to play the bass in no time.

*** Travel Equipment ***
i can provide bass and amp, but i expect student to have own bass and amp to practice

traditional plucking style, slap, and tap. I teach all genres.

Nicholas C. Garden City, MI

Subjects Taught

Bass Guitar, Guitar, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Piano, Trumpet, Upright Bass

About Me

Detroit native, Nicholas C. K., demonstrated an innate musical talent from a young age. His command of piano, guitar, trumpet and bass progressed to studies at both Columbia University in Chicago and Wayne State University in Detroit. Since age 16 Nic has toured the country sharing the stage with acclaimed rock acts such as; Tesla, Bret Michaels, 3 Doors Down and many others. He is currently endorsed by Warwick Basses.

Nicholas been a musician in some form or another for as long as he can remember. His musical journey started when he was only six, with a delve into the realm of classical piano. While there he studied under world class child prodigy Josh Cullen. The composers that he studied include Bach, Beethoven, Barton, Hayden and many others.

From here he progressed to playing jazz trumpet, studying the Jamey Aebersold method under Paul Finkbeiner, the lead trumpet player for the Paul Keller Ensemble.

Then at the age of 11, with the help of his grandfather he discovered the guitar. He learned quickly on his old SR guitar. He quickly discovered that he had a natural taste for blues phrasing, and his soloing abilities quickly blossomed. 2 years later, he had formed his first band, Spherical. It was through this band that he found the bass.

His journey into the realm of bass, began out of necessity and progressed into love of the bottom end. Since then, he has been collecting basses, playing, living and breathing bass. He now realizes the importance of a funky beat, a subtle line and most important of all A Tight Groove!!!

The benefit of studying under someone with a vast array of both talent and experience is clear.

*** Lesson Details ***
During his musical career Nicholas has played almost every style of music; from folk to experimental from jazz to rock. One thread holds true through all music, it has to groove.
During the course of a lesson he will cover a broad range of topics starting from the basics, and moving into ear training, sight-reading, theoretical knowledge and most important for bass players, groove. Just as every player has their own musical personality and voice, so to does every lesson that Nicholas gives.
In a supportive, patient environment, every lesson is custom tailored to the student.

*** Studio Equipment ***
