Acting, Broadway Singing, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Singing, Songwriting, Speaking Voice

About Me

I teach students of all ages in a relaxed, encouraging, and fun way- but with the structure many beginners need to reach their goals and with the background of a professional singer! Students will see themselves making progress and reaching set goals! This encourages them to continue on their musical journey - becoming the very best they can be! We will also learn fun popular songs and look for opportunities to sing them. We will also learn many styles of pop singing as well -- from pop to rock to R&B to country & more! From beginners and just-for-fun singers to singer/songwriters to pros, each student will be able to learn the skills they need to sing from their heart and find their own true voice.

Teri has taught voice for over 15 years to all ages and all levels, led and trained various bands and groups for over 17 years. She is a club hit recording artist and premier LA vocal coach. Her vocals have graced full length CD's, cuts on various records, performances on TV and radio, and gained her a nomination for Best Female Vocalist, All Access Music Awards. She is the author of Vocal Essentials for the Pop Singer: Take Your Singing from Good to Great, from Hal Leonard Publishing. Teri has a Master's Degree in Education and a Bachelors Degree in Speech Pathology. She studied music at Blue Bear School of Music in San Francisco including music theory, vocal technique and vocal performance, guitar and stage performance. She had a dance club hit in the 90's which garnered success on mix shows and dance charts across the country.

She specializes in getting the best out of her students -- giving them a solid vocal technique to let their natural ability shine. Her students will attest to her positive, relaxed and encouraging teaching style.

In addition to learning the basics, Teri can help students get their voice in shape for events, school projects/plays, auditions (American Idol etc...), a solo or band project, and more!

Teri offers flexibility with scheduling to accommodate students various needs including day/eves and weekends. Studio is in a convenient Westside LA location.

*** Lesson Details ***
Students can expect a fun lesson with vocal warm-up exercises, and lots of singing, in a supportive environment. Teri works out of her home studio, so students can work with microphones and instruments.

Children
Voice lessons build confidence and enthusiasm, and help prepare children for performing in front of others. Singing at a young age develops vocal abilities, but more importantly develops a child's aural abilities (recognizing melodies, harmonies, etc.) as well as the ability to focus, take direction and be creative.

Performing / Recording / Vocal Health
Recording. performing and touring presents unique challenges to singers. By concentrating on breathing, vocal production and tension reduction, warm-up exercises, and range building exercises, these lessons help increase stamina, build vocal tone, and reduce the effects of vocal fatigue for those who sing long hours at a time.

Church / Worship Leading
Singing on praise/worship teams is an art form all of it's own. Lessons centered around this kind of singing focus on the areas of blending, tone, hearing harmonies, and keeping your part in a group. For the soloist / worship leader, lessons help in the areas of projection, tone, range, runs, and breathing.

About Me

I fully enjoy teaching music and theater to others and spreading the art of performance, reaching out to all generations. I believe in customizing every lesson to be unique for my students in a way that will serve their individual needs. I teach with patience and encouragement and believe that students prosper and improve much more from a positive experience. My lessons are intended to be fun and influential in a positive light that can lead to a rewarding career, hobby, or just for personal enjoyment!

Every since I was a little girl, I have been devoted to the arts. When I began college, I knew that music was my path. As a music major I developed a deeper understanding of music theory, piano, voice, and theater. I received my A.A. in Music at College of the Desert and my Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Redlands- which I attended on a music scholarship. I have played leading roles in several operas and musicals in Southern California, including Gianni Schicchi, Die Fledermaus, La Boheme (DTL nominee), The Impresario, The Grand Duke, Patience (DTL award), Cosi fan tutte, Little Women the Musical, Seussical the Musical, and many more. I have also appeared in several concerts, opera scenes, competitions (winning music scholarships and theater awards), and worked as a singer at churches, restaurants, and in pop bands. I continue to perform and study music because performing is a part of who I am and I could never live without it.

With this experience under my belt, I feel a desire to pass on my knowledge to students. I carry a strong passion to help people develop their abilities and make them their own. I truly believe that if someone wants something out of life then they WILL achieve it with dedication, perseverance, confidence, and by having FUN doing it!

*** Lesson Details ***
I begin each voice and acting lesson with a warm-up to prepare the student for their lesson. Next, we do a series of exercises specially designed to help each individual develop their skill in a way that best fits them. We then work on a piece of their choice for the remainder of the lesson, perfecting their technique and helping them become performance ready. I teach with patience and fun because I feel that this is the key to achieving goals and inspiring a good habit of practice.

If you do not already have a song, sheet music, or monologue (acting students) to bring in I can help you choose one during your first lesson. I also require that my students keep a practice journal to record their daily practice sessions. If possible, please bring a recording device of some sort so you can record your lessons. It is a HUGE help to be able to listen back on your lessons and to use them in your daily practice! No experience is necessary, that is what I'm here for!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music office w/ keyboard and seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I could bring my keyboard if necessary.

About Me

Hi! I'm April L! I’m enthusiastic & caring, fun & friendly, and I want YOU to SUCCEED!

I’ve had a love for music since I can remember! My first expressions of music were singing in the car, shower, living room … anywhere I could! I took music lessons as a child, and it wasn't until college that I really developed my skills. I have been teaching Piano, Music & the Arts for over 15 years and love it! I've taught hundreds of successful students, and the two things they (or their parents) have in common is consistency and a desire to learn! These students have continued their love of music and performance thru high school, college, and adulthood!

The most important gift I can give you? To inspire you to Believe You Can! With some focus, consistency, and guidance, you can accomplish a lot! If you Believe You Can, YOU CAN! It’s true! You can achieve anything your heart desires!

Congratulations on beginning this exciting journey! I look forward to getting to know YOU! :)

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that learning anything new involves a good rapport between student & teacher. The first thing we’ll do is find out your goals & the style of learning that works best for you! To make the most of your time, we’ll incorporate your senses to involve you fully ... sight, sound, speech, touch. This will allow you to learn at a good speed, while creating a strong foundation for you to build your future. TOGETHER, we will customize a plan JUST FOR YOU!

ALL STUDENTS ~ YOU will have the opportunity to perform in one or two recitals each year! Although it's optional, it is important to your overall experience. Most students look forward to this event, because everyone gets to encourage each other AND be encouraged! The goal is for you to feel comfortable sharing your talent with your friends & family. It's a time to celebrate what you've learned!

Beginning Piano Students: Whether you are 5 years old, or 105, we will start with very simple assignments so you can feel comfortable with the basic concepts of music. You will be able to play beginning pieces (songs) within the first few weeks! Since each student is unique, I have FIVE ways to teach note-reading, so if one way doesn't fit for you, we have four other choices! I have created solid methods for you to learn easily. These have been proven with years of success, so I know you will be able to absorb & master basic note reading QUICKLY! (Please note that children under 6 years old may need more time.)

Intermediate & Advanced Piano Students: At your first lesson, we will find out what you know, what you WANT to know, and what it takes to get there. Bring your most recent books and materials, so we can sample different pages from your previous music lessons. We will touch on rhythm, theory, and sight reading, to refresh your skills!

Voice / Singing & All Performing Arts Students: We will explore techniques & exercises to familiarize you with your choice of study, and build from there. The sky's the limit!

ALL STUDENTS ~ Whether you want to JUST HAVE FUN with music & the arts, FULFILL a lifelong personal interest, or PURSUE a professional career ~ YOU & I can make it happen TOGETHER!

*** Specialties ***

About Me

With over 13 years of teaching private music lessons and over 20 years of professional studio experience. I am a full-time performing artist & music professional that recently moved to Nashville after working in Los Angeles for the past 7 1/2 years. I grew up in the great state of NY where I was able to start training and competing at a young age.
I was an All State Vocal participant and soloist with the New York State Music Educators Association
I've produced and written CDs in Los Angeles, Capetown, South Africa & Ghana West Africa.
In 2003 I helped pioneer a School of Music in Ghana West Africa that continues to run now over 7 years.
Knowing how important movement is regards to performance and vocal health I studied as a theatre student and vocal performance major at Belhaven College. While at Belhaven I was given the honor of becoming a finalist in the NATS (National Association of Teacher's of Singing) State Competition for classical voice as a Mezzo Soprano.
A year later I was belting it as a Top 10 Finalist in the "Got Vocals" competition hosted by Charlotte's THE BEAT R&B Radio Station. In 2006 I moved to Los Angeles, where I began a weekly show that lasted for 6 months. After that time I was asked to create the Oneonta Kids Performing Arts Department for children's performing arts at Oneonta Congregational Church in South Pasadena. As the director I put together weekly workshops in dance/singing/poetry. I also wrote/directed/choreographed and scored 2 plays during my stay there.
Afterward I hosted a weekly showcase that lasted for 5 months at local LA hotspot Molly Malones then 3 months at Genghis Cohen, sponsored by ASCAP and Adrenaline Music. Since that time I've worked on scores for short films, taught, performed and done session work...so thats me in a nutshell...if you want to know more, just ask. I would really enjoy meeting you in person and becoming your teacher.

*** Lesson Details ***
The students that have come to me with an end product to get that role - EVERY SINGLE STUDENT has gotten it! Whatever style you want to focus on, I will do my best to take you there with excellence.
I promise to meet you where you're at. I dedicate myself to walking alongside you as you grow in courage, in wisdom and love for music :-)

In our first lesson, half of the time I will take you through a series of questions to find out what you want to learn, what kind of training that you have had already, as well as any questions you might have. Then we dive right in to get some hands on experience!

We build it from there tailoring your lessons to your level of experience and setting attainable goals.
MY PERSONAL GOAL as your teacher is for you to find freedom in performance. I want you to learn how to love your instrument and find your own style of expression.

*** Studio Equipment ***
88 key weighted keyboard
64 keys semi weighted keyboard
Alvarez Classical Guitar
Taylor Acoustic Guitar

Lampifier Microphones - cordless and corded
Sennheiser live mics
CAD studio mic
CAD Acoustic Enclosure for recording

Garageband

*** Travel Equipment ***

*** Specialties ***
Over 20 years of experience in the studio as a session vocalist.
I specialize in vocal freedom, incorporating the feldenkrais and alexander techniques with exercises also taken from the Jeanie Deva Contemporary Vocalist Series.
On piano and guitar I very much focus on the styles that make the students come alive. I stress the importance of reading and ear training, but don't force it to the point of the students dislike for music training. I'd rather they enjoy and experiment with sound than demanding they play the music perfect as written.
