Currently I am involved in an acoustic rock band called The Standard Deviation (TSD). With this band I do vocals, keys, flute and percussion. I am very comfortable with performing.

Having been a performing musician from the age of 10, I have experience in several instruments and almost every genre of music. With a bachelor's degree in flute performance, and most of a master's in the same (to be completed in the next year), my primary focus has been on classical music in flute, with an emphasis in orchestral playing and contemporary music.

I began focusing on singing a few years after flute, to accompany my guitar playing, and began writing songs in the pop/folk genre. I have been singing both solo and with choirs for the last 10 years. The human voice and the flute are remarkably similar in the way the body is used to produce sound, and I use very similar techniques when focusing on breath control and support for both.

I have a BS in music education, I am a professional musician/ composer/ arranger.I received my teaching credentials at SFSU and have been a General music teacher as well as a, band teacher. I have studied trumpet with Classical and Jazz teachers and big band arranging with Frank Foster( saxophonist and arranger with Count Basie Band). At present I am retired and teaching privately.

I have been teaching music for over 30 years as well as being a professional musician. I enjoy teaching because it allows me pass on what my teachers taught me as well as what my experiences have been. I have found that teaching music builds confidence in students, not only in music but in other areas as well.

In every culture that we study, music is one way we learn a lot about how they lived. If we don’t pass this knowledge on we will be forgotten. Teaching to me is not only a pleasure but a duty I must perform for our survival.

Clarinetist Jeremy F. has studied with members of the San Francisco and Chicago Symphony Orchestras, and holds a Master’s degree in Solo Classical Performance from San Francisco State University. While at SF State, he won the annual Concerto Competition, and took the grand prize at the inaugural Wesley Farrand Day Piano Duo Competition. He has played with the Santa Cruz County Symphony, Bay Area Rainbow Symphony, Coastal Repertory Theater, Symphony Parnassus, the UC Berkeley Summer Symphony and has performed many chamber music concerts in and around the San Francisco Bay Area.

He currently resides in Santa Cruz and performs with local organizations while teaching private woodwind and voice lessons. He plans to pursue a PhD in musicology, studying the feminist implications of the coloratura roles of Mozart’s operas, while continuing a lifelong exploration of the clarinet.

From the moment Kat was tall enough to reach the keys she made so much noise on her family’s piano that they eventually bought a kid-sized version to keep in her room. When Kat turned 7 her family got her the best present ever; lessons with an amazing piano teacher.

Kat also began to study flute several years later and soon realized that music was the life for her. She majored in music in both high school and college graduating with a BA in Music from St. Norbert College in DePere, Wisconsin.

Kat has had a very diverse career in music. From a full time private music teacher to the Musical Director of a Burning Man Opera, to the Section Leader for a Youth Orchestra, to the keyboard player in a Theatrical Heavy Metal Band, Kat is always thrilled to stretch her wings and try new things.
