I've been teaching piano lessons for nearly 30 years. I've taught Kindergarteners through adults, have taught public school music, and also taught future music teachers at the university level. I have a PhD in education with an emphasis in music. I'm still an active performer, direct music at a church and have played professionally for many years, including 2 times in Carnegie Hall. I believe students should have a keen concept of fundamentals, which are often overlooked by most teachers. Once you learn the basics, it's much easier to progress.

About Phil

I've been a professional musician and music teacher for nearly 30 years. I have a Bachelors and Masters degree in music and PhD in education, with an emphasis in music. I've taught students from the ages of 5 to 72. I've had a successful performing career and have played twice at Carnegie Hall

Learn your favorite songs! Coordination, singing and playing, music reading, improvisation. The foundation of music lessons is developing good ears and good time feel (groove). These are skills that all the best musicians have. That, along with some study of piano basics will cover about half of our lesson time. The other half should be devoted to the kind of music that inspired you to look me up. My hope is that you will become a well rounded musician and pianist, and that we'll both discover new music :-)

I also enjoy preparing for jam sessions, auditions, and competing for placement in school ensembles and scholarships.

As a piano teacher, I am very open to students' musical goals and assist them in working toward them step by step. I work with what motivates my students to learn. I am very patient and teach my students to be patient with the process so that learning music can become a life-long pursuit.

Schedule: Each student is assigned a designated lesson time each week (half-hour, 45 min, or hour slots). Students are expected to be punctual to ensure full lesson time.

Materials: Students will need lesson books and must have them ready for each lesson. The preferred methods to start are Piano Adventures by Faber, All-in-one course by Alfred or Bastien Piano Basics. Please provide a folder or binder to hold additional sheet music, assignment sheets, theory papers, etc. Links to order piano books, sheet music or music theory flashcards will be sent to students prior to their first lesson and may be ordered via Amazon online.

Practicing: Daily practice should become a habit. Students are ...

"Danielle Cooke has taught my two sons (aged 10 and 6) piano for over a year now, and we have been very happy with her. Having played piano for almost 15 years when I was younger, I have been looking for the right fit to start my children on their own music journey. Danielle was referred to us by a friend, and we have been so pleased to find someone who enjoys teaching children, and who can balance patience, humor, theory and skill in her lessons. She challenges my children in a warm and nurturing way, and in a way that draws them in to the music and gives them pride of their accomplishments. With these ages and two very distinct learning personalities, it is amazing to see how they both resonate with her teaching style and are learning at their own levels, and have come so far in a short time. She has many teaching tools in her back pocket, and an appreciation for classical, contemporary, and recognizable children’s music (an important mix for little ones!). I have caught a glimpse of her own talents and her students’ work at more advanced levels and can see Danielle’s impressive range of repertoire and expertise across a variety of styles. She has a gift!"
