I am a NYS certified teacher who has been teaching in the school system for over 20 years. I hold both my BM and MA degree in Music Education, and Jazz guitar was my major instrument in college.
Incorporated in my system of guitar training work in music reading, music theory, fretboard navigation, pick-control and fingerstyle techniques, and ear-training applicable to most contemporary styles of music.
*** Lesson Details *** My lessons follow a structured format. I begin with technical exercises for both the picking/strumming hand and the fretting hand, leading to good sound production.
As students learn to achieve well-balanced tones, they learn to apply that to the written page using standard music notation and the TAB system. From single notes, students learn to build harmony, (chords), from 2 notes, to 3, and thereafter, 4. Song repertoire is built from a variety of sources including published method books. Memorization of song repertoire is stressed.
Within the first 2 months, beginning students will have learned the melodies and basic harmonies to simple songs including "Jingle Bells", "Ode to Joy" and "Love me Tender".
After the student has learned the notes and scales in the first position as well as the associated chords, he/she can learn songs of his/her choosing from the Folk, Pop, Classical and Jazz repertoire that is appropriate to his/her current level. For young students, a practice chart is given where a student is to mark his/her practice time in order for progress to be made.
For pick-style guitar, the books that I use include, (but are not limited to): Guitar for the Small Frye series by Dick Bennett, the Mel Bay series, The Hal Leonard Guitar Method as well as associated songbook supplements.
For for those students coming with prior music reading experience, the Dick Bennett Primer series and/or the Berklee Guitar Method is used.
For finger-style, the Mel Bay methods and/or the Aaron Shearer are used.
Developing a thorough knowledge of repertoire of standards from the Great American Songbook is critical if a student wishes to audition into a HS or college Jazz program. I can assist the more advanced student in choosing appropriate repertoire along and teach the associated improvisational skills.
NYSSMA training/coaching is available, with suitable training beginning a least a year before the NYSSMA audition is to take place.
The student should have a good quality guitar, (steel strings, nylon strings, or steel-string electric) professionally set-up with light-gauged strings (for the beginners), a strap, a music stand, and time and space in the home in order to encourage a daily routine of practice.
*** Studio Equipment *** I have a dedicated room in my home that is set up for private practice and teaching. It has an electronic piano, folding chairs, a music stand and guitar amplifiers and cables.
*** Travel Equipment *** I bring an acoustic guitar with me to all out-going lessons so that I can play along with the student and demonstrate techniques as necessary. I bring extra blank sheets of music writing paper, fret board diagrams, and study sheets, as well as extra copies of the books I use most frequently. I can purchase books/materials for the student, with the student's or parent/guardian's reimbursement, or the student may purchase materials on their own.

I've had 4 lessons so far with Bernadette. I am an adult and feel I am making great progress. The lessons are a good mix of learning to play the guitar, learning to read music and theory. She recommended a good beginner book and while we stick to it she tailors the material according to how I am doing and need to learn. She also makes notes and gives me additional work in a music notebook. The lessons are never rushed and because there isn't a student after me usually are 5-10 minutes over the 45 minutes.
I feel fortunate to have found someone with a Masters in music education and 20 years of teaching experience.
Thomas holds an associates degree in music performance from Nassau community college, and recently finished a bachelors degree in Music Education from Hofstra University. Thomas has also studied privately with many of the finest musicians New York City has to offer; including Martin Wind, Alan Hampton, Mike Frost, and many others. Our son had his first lesson with Thomas last night. Thomas is extremely patient and was able to keep him engaged throughout the entire lesson. That's HUGE because our son is autistic and has trouble focusing. It's only been one lesson but I recommend Thomas! Very fun and professional.

Born in Cebu City, Philippines in 1990, raised primarily in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries, and pursuing further education in the United States of America, Hopengrace ("Penny") is a Global Nomad currently situated in the Greater New York City Area.
She started taking music lessons from her mother at the age of four and learned to read music at the same time she started to read storybooks. From the age of ten, Hopengrace took violin lessons, during her parents' rare furloughs, from Mr. Frederico Regner, a World War II veteran returned from the United States. While
in the Philippines for a combined year of junior and senior level high school, she took violin lessons from Mr. Marc Hamlet Mercado and Mr. Rodelio Flores. Hopengrace has also taken coaching from Ms. Princess Christine Ybañez to prepare for competition in the Solo String (Bowed) category of the 14th National Student Convention in which she won 2nd Place.
In 2007, Hopengrace received a Presidential Scholarship from Tennessee Temple University (TTU). There she studied violin under Mrs. Laura Minor (B.Mus. Vanderbilt University, MA Music NYU). She also took piano from Mrs. Carolyn Kemp (BS Mus.Ed. Baptist Bible College, MA Mu. Ed. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga) and voice from Dr. William Knowles and Mr. Michael Mays (BS Mus. Perf. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, MA Church Music Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary).
In 2008, as a member of TTU's Weigle Concert Choir, Hopengrace had the privilege to be chosen to sing with a combined choir in Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium with the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Dr. David Thye, Principal Conductor-in-Residence of MidAmerica Productions. She became a member of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Youth Orchestra (CSOYO) in the fall of that year and continued performing with them for three seasons. She also participated in the special orchestra for the annual Chattanooga Boys' Choir "Singing Christmas Tree" concerts at the Tivoli Theatre. In 2010, world-renowned violinist Midori chose CSOYO as one of two youth orchestras for her annual Orchestra Residencies Program, and Hopengrace had the rare opportunity to perform with one of her inspirations in concert.
Hopengrace became a registered Suzuki Method Violin Teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas on July 2011. She has also trained in Orff-Schulwerk.
During her travels around the world, Hopengrace struggled to keep her art alive. However, she has often been complemented for her distinctive strong, full-bodied tone and adaptability. Her range varies from Baroque to Modern. She plays on a John Cheng 1737 "King Joseph" Guarneri model violin with both wood and carbon fiber bows.
Hopengrace welcomes students and employment while she prepares for entrance in a Master of Music in Performance program. She hopes to start on that new chapter of her life in the fall of 2013. Inspired by the impact of Venezuela's El Sistema program and her own experiences during her travels, Hopengrace hopes to use her talents to enable or build similar programs both while she teaches and in the lands where she was raised.
*** Lesson Details *** TEACHING PHILOSOPHY “Play with heart. Play with living soul.” — Dr. Shinichi Suzuki As a teacher, my goal is to instruct as well as inspire each student to reach for his or her highest potential. I hope to give each student the tools to progress so that one day they can be their own best teacher, and play with a sound and style that is uniquely their own. Most importantly, I hope to instill a desire to learn and a mindset that the art of violin playing is fun and that it is just as we call it--playing. My teaching abilities range from beginning through advanced levels. Students must have a desire to learn and commit to daily (mindful) practice.
I am a Suzuki Violin teacher. This means that I am trained to work with even the youngest of musicians in a nurturing , fun and challenging way. Dr. Suzuki believed that it was important to develop a noble character in all children through the mastery of a musical instrument. He also believed that all children were capable of this mastery if the environment is saturated with music and love. My students enjoy playing the violin because they are given the tools they need to play beautifully and to make progress on their instrument. Each lesson will focus on proper set up and posture, technical work and musical direction/ideas that will inspire them to carry on their work throughout the week. I demonstrate quite a bit in the lessons, as I find it is the most effective way to communicate in music. However, I am only with the student once a week, therefore much of the lesson is geared towards helping the parent and child understand what his/her home tasks are, and how to carry them out successfully. 10 minutes of mindful practice is worth an hour of careless work. “There is no born genius. Education is the way to develop ability.” — Dr. Shinichi Suzuki Parental support and involvement is key to any child’s progress, especially at the beginning stages. Parents of young beginners are encouraged to take a few lessons before starting their child on the instrument. Parents serve as a practice coach/partner during daily home practice sessions and are required to attend and participate in their child’s lessons. Listening to recordings and attending live concerts are strongly recommended to increase musical awareness and enthusiasm in the student.
In spite of my rigorous Suzuki training, my unorthodox learning experience has taught me the value of being flexible and using methods that work best for a specific individual. I am not averse to seeking and applying a new method (eg. traditional, Masterclass, O'Connor, etc.) if the situation calls for it.
What should be expected from a Teacher/Student relationship?
I think a student should expect their teacher to give them honest, thoughtful feedback. Just enough that they can manage the information at that time. The teacher should give detailed instruction on ways the student can improve, without destroying the students sense of self worth or spirit. On the contrary, the teacher must always find a way to see the student as having great potential. This way, no matter how limited the current level of ability may be, there is hope for growth. Even without saying it, the student will feel the teachers' attitude towards him and may become that person (for better or for worse). The student should expect to be challenged, encouraged and inspired by their teacher. The teacher should expect that the student and the parents commit to daily practice, and have a desire to improve. The student must apply his/her teacher's feedback while always searching within himself for ways to develop. Mutual respect is key.

After Berklee I studied guitar privately for two years with Mitch Coodley who was a teacher at Berklee. This helped sharpen my skills more as a guitar player.
Recently I recorded aand produced a song "Together We Can" with one of my students for the Together We Can contest they were having in all the public schools in New York State. The song one first prize.

My 7 year old son has dream of being a rock star so I started him with an electric guitar. I spent a long time looking for the right teacher and am glad we found Greg - he is comfortable with both acoustic and electric guitars as well as being a performer himself. Another thing that I am happy about is that Greg is teaching my son how to read music properly, not just how to get by like too many guitarists out there. I expect that once my 7 year old knows how to read and gets past the beginner phase, Greg will also teach him theory. This is the old school training that too many teachers and students skip today. Good for you Greg!

Our son has been taking guitar lessons for about 3 months. We chose Greg because of his expertise, knowledge and ability to teach. Learning to read music might not always be easy but Greg was able to convey to our son the importance of this skill. Greg has taught my son the beauty of playing the guitar that now is very confident and happy to play . Greg is always reliable, extremely flexible and dependable. am happy to see my son learning new skills. also very happy that Greg is teaching him everything needs to know about playing the guitar.

American violinist Emily V. is an active and versatile performer of chamber and orchestral music. As a chamber musician, Emily has appeared with the Mannes American Composers Ensemble in the ensemble's Alice Tully Hall debut. Additionally, she has collaborated with the Newman and Oltman Guitar Duo in a concert that has been broadcast on WWFM, and is a member of Trio des Waldes, a horn trio that has performed throughout NYC and on the Bucks County (PA) Performing Arts concert series.
As an orchestral violinist, she regularly performs with the Symphony of Westchester and the Chappaqua Orches

I am excited to write a review for our awesome violin instructor~! Our little pre-teen 10 year old daughter took lessons prior Miss Emily for about 6 months but had no motivation to practice and so there was no progress. However, since we met Miss Emily, our daughter has been so motivated! Only after her first lesson, she understood how to read notes, she was engaged, and must've picked up her violin to practice at least 3 times a day for a good 20-30 minutes on her own (under no request by Miss Emily)! I believe it is because Miss Emily is very passionate about her teaching and is very encouraging towards her students. She doesn't make violin lessons a chore, rather an amazing experience!
Miss Emily is very knowledgeable and an amazing and very professional instructor! She patiently goes step by step to make sure all the basis for a firm foundation in music is there and then thoroughly goes to all the steps to keep it simple in learning!
